Chapter 13
"Follow me! Quickly! And be quiet," Tetra whispered, Inferno could hear the laughter in Tetra's voice. Tetra grabbed Inferno's hand and pulled her away from the camp and into the shadows. They swam for about five minutes down the trench and then they came to a crack in the wall.
Tetra squeezed through, and Inferno followed. As the crevice became wider, Tetra put her arm out to stop Inferno. She pressed a finger to her lips, indicating that Inferno should stay silent. Then she gestured toward the cavern. Inside was the most beautiful thing Inferno had ever seen.
Hundreds maybe thousands of brightly colored jellyfish were floating in the dark water of the cavern. They each glowed with a different color, lighting up the black water of the cavern with brilliant light and color. Some were tiny, the size of thimbles, others were the size of large boulders. But each floated in the water as light as feathers, but the sting of the jellies would bring a lot of pain. It amazed Inferno that something so beautiful could be so dangerous.
The current in the cavern swirled upward like a cyclone. The jellyfish all floated with the current, creating a swirl of color and light. Inferno couldn't tear her eyes away from it, but Tetra pointed down toward the bottom of the cavern. Hurricane and Tsunami were sitting together on the cavern floor, looking up at the jellyfish. Hurricane had his arm around Tsunami and she had her head resting on his shoulder. Tsunami's black tail blended into the shadows, the color from the jellies reflecting from the white patches of her tail. The scales of Hurricane's dark blue tail shimmered in the light from the jellyfish.
As Inferno watched, Hurricane leaned over and gently kissed Tsunami's cheek. She heard Tetra gasp quietly behind her, and then felt the faint whoosh of water as Tetra swam closer to peer over her shoulder. Tsunami kissed Hurricane back, and they wrapped their arms around each other, their tails twined together. Inferno heard a shower of pebbles and then a soft "Oh crap" from Tetra. Her tail had knocked some of the pebbles loose, and sent them clattering to the ground.
Tsunami and Hurricane pulled away from each other and looked up. Inferno swam backward, pulling Tetra back with her. And then they swam out of cavern and back to the camp as quickly as possible. As soon as they were back by the fire, Tetra burst out laughing.
"I can't believe I just saw that!" Tetra's tail lashed back and forth as she laughed. "I think I'm gonna cry! Hahahahheeeh!"
"Is that so weird?" Inferno asked, curling her tail over one of the rocks nearest the campfire.
"Well, I have known Tsunami for as long as I can remember, and I've known Hurricane for nearly as long. I've never seen anything like that before, I mean they have always been friends. And I've seen them hug before. But they've never kissed." Tetra looked both freaked out and amused.
"Do you normally spy on them when they go out?" Inferno asked, raising her eyebrows.
"Maybe...I'm Tsunami's best friend, spying on her is my job!" Tetra put her hands on her hips, and twitched her tail angrily. But she was smiling. "I think we just spied on their first kiss. Ahhhh, I'm a horrible mer! Hahahaha!" Tetra couldn't stop laughing.
"So do we tell her we spied on her?" Inferno didn't want Tsunami to be mad at her.
"I saw nothing." Now Tetra just looked embarrassed. "We can tell her we saw the jellyfish, but left right after. And that's only if she asks."
"Good plan," Inferno nodded.
As soon as Inferno had finished speaking, Hurricane swam into camp. Tsunami followed, about five minutes later. Inferno smiled to herself, her mother really did know how to keep a secret.
