Night of Owls Pt. 3

The place you were at was the most expensive private residence in Gotham City. Vaulted at fifty-eight million dollars, the complex takes up the top three floors of the famous Powers Hotel and is inhabited by the Powers patriarch, Joseph, and his wife, Maria. The place was built during the Great Depression, as a fortress against the masses.

The place had its own wooden gymnasium, pool, bowling alley, even a zeppelin moor on the balcony. Protected by both hotel and private security, armed with encrypted wireless security, it has never seen a visitor not employed, or invited, by the Powers family. Until tonight.

It was the night after the Talon attacked you in your own home and killed Lincoln March. You were on a war path now. You were ready to find and stop the Court of Owls once and for all. Mrs. Powers was going to find this out as the elevator's doors opened. The bars were still closed but she saw the destroyed apartment.

Maria: Dear god...

She began to pound on the button as she began to scream.

Maria: Security!

You stopped the metal doors from opening but kept the gate close so that you could see her. So that she can see you.

Y/N: Going down?

Maria: You...You can't be here...I'm calling...

You stopped her by lifting up an object you found. The white owl mask.

Maria: That...that's not Joseph's.

Y/N: No shit, you hag. It's yours. I found the case for your husband's but it was empty. Where is he?

Maria just stood ther in silence. You grabbed the bars which shook the elevator, scaring her.

Maria: Gone! Out of the country! And you and your friends...you think you have the upper hand but you don't! If I was you I would...

You shook the elevator again which caused her to fall to the floor.

Y/N: You're not me. You don't even understand how pissed off I am right now. You and all of your friends are going to pay for what you did 100 times over. I'm done playing nice, Mrs. Powers. And if I was you, I'd get used to this view. You'll find bar to be a familiar sight soon enough.

You let go of the gate and turned away. You walkes to the window and jumped out. As you dove down toward the street, your com rang. You pulled on your cape and glided between the buildings.

Alfred: It looks like your scare tactic worked. She's dialing her husband now.

Y/N: Tell me you can track the call.

Alfred: It looks as though we can, Master Y/N. Though his line is basically impenetrably coded, we're now able to piggyback on her's to find him.

Y/N: And the Talons.

Alfred: We have moved them to the cold storage. Though, it seems they have fallen into a deep slumber.

Y/N: Good. Tell me where the owls are.

Alfred: Sir, if I may...

Y/N: Alfred, tell me where they are.

Alfred hesitated. The bloodthirsty anger that you had carried with you when you came back to the Manor was back. You were doing this for vengeance. Justice for Lincoln March and those whose lives were lost during the Talons' attack.

Alfred: 77 Irvington.

You landed on a roof and slowly rose to your feet.

Y/N: I'm going radio silent for the rest of the night, Alfred. Get some rest.

Alfred: But sir...

The communications were cut off as you looked out at the city. There was once a detective that even Bruce looked up to. Henri Ducard. Said that there's a feeling you get on a case sometimes. A feeling that comes when the pieces suddenly fit into place and the answers you were looking for all appear before you.

The feeling, Ducard said, was like "a remembering". Not so much a discovery of something new. It was like remembering something you had forgotten.

When Lincoln March gave you that list and the still unopened letter, you felt it. The list of names that you had seen before that you never pieced together. It was all connected.

The Court of Owls had many members in the Mirror House.

This brought you to Harbor House. The place you never thought to look. You had taken down the Dealer and Mirror House but you never found the evidence to lock up the names on the list. The Powers were on there as well. As you approched the front doors, you thought about everyone affected by this organization.

Tonight, the Court of Owls goes down, once and for all. No more hiding. No more plotting from the shadows. Tonight their story ends. Their nursery rhyme will go silent. Their names will be forgotten by Gotham.

You kicked down the wooden door and headed up the stairs this time. You traveled to the top floor where you flund the ladder leading up to the attic. Light was on.

You climbed the steps and found yourself in the large hidden room. There was a large table with candles illuminating the room with many of the main members sitting at the table. All were looking at you. At the foot of the table, there was an empty seat.

Owl: Batman. Please, take a seat.

Y/N: Not a chance in hell. You're all human here. I'm guessing you know what pain is. Now, I don't care how many bones I have to break here. There are 4,120 bones here besides mine. I will break 4,119 if I have to.

The Owls remained silent. They looked at each other for a brief moment before they turned back to you.

Owl: We wish to talk....

You grabbed the closest owl member and slammed their head down onto the table which caused their mask to shatter along with the wine glass. You let the unconscious body fall to the floor as you stood there. Your eyes fell onto the main owl.

Y/N: You killed my friend. You almost killed my family. I'm not playing any fucking games. Take those damn masks off and turn yourself in. If you don't, I'll tear them off and take you in by force.

Owl: There is a third option.

You heard footsteps behind you which made you turned around. It was a Talon.

Owl: Join us, or die.

Y/N: Fuck you.

The Talon lunged at you but you grabbed their arm and slammed them onto the table. The Owls watched the two of you fight before you found yourself being through down the hole and onto the second floor. The Talon jumped down and slammed their feet into your gut which broke the floor and sent you both down into the old banquet hall.

You stood back up and looked at the Talon. The last Talon.

Y/N: You're dead, already. I don't feel a thing when I kick your ass.

Owl: Perhaps you should.

Y/N: Don't you worry. You'll get yours when I'm done.

Owl: Our Talon! Show him your true face!

You stood there as the Talon reached up and grabbed his mask. You watched in horror as he took it off to show you his face.

Y/N: M-Mr. March?

Lincoln March, the final Talon, stood before you.

Owl: Now, kill the Batman!

Lincoln lunged at you but you flipped over him. You pulled out your batarangs and threw them which stabbed him in the back. Lincoln turned around and threw a knife at you which you blocked with your arm. Lincoln took the chance to lunge forward and punch you in the face.

He kicked your gut which caused the hidden blade to stab into you. You grabbed his ankle and broke it before you shoved him to the ground.

Y/N: Mr. March! Can you hear me?!

Owl: He hears no one.

Owl: He answers to the Owls.

Owl: He is our Talon.

Owl: He is ours.

Y/N: Mr. March....

Lincoln lunged at you again but you caught his arms and slammed him down. You looked into his eyes, those that used to belong to a sincere man who wanted to shape Gotham into a haven, and saw that he was no longer Lincoln March.

He was a Talon.

You twisted his arm which broke the bone. You stepped back as Lincoln struggled to get back to his feet. Once he was standing there, you saw that he was barley able to. He rushed at you but you ducked under his punch and slammed a fist into his gut. You then got behind him and trapped him in a headlock.

Y/N: If you're still there, Mr. March, I'm sorry. You deserved better.

Then, in one motion, you snapped his neck and let his body drop to the floor. You slowly stood up and caught your breath. Before you was Gotham's man of tomorrow. Now, he will never see that tomorrow. The Golden future he had once seen, was now nothing but a dream he once had.

You turned back to leave the room and made you way back to the attic. They won't win tonight. Not tonight. Not....

Wine was spilt all over the table as the bodies of the Owls were limp and lifeless in their seats. You looked at the scene before you. You walked over to the head of the table and pulled off the mask the was on Mr. Powers.

Dead. All of them were dead. In the end, they won.

Y/N: Damn you. Damn you all.
--------
You stood in the penthouse where you and Cassandra had moved back into. Conner had decided to go to Smallville with Jon and live with him and Lois just so you had your space.

In your hand was the unopened letter that March had given you. It was late. Extremely late. 4 AM late. Cassandra was asleep in your room but you were restless. The Owls were gone. The Talon were gone. Batman won and Gotham was safe yet again.

You looked at the letter for a moment before you opened it and pulled it out.

Lincoln: Y/N. My young friend. I'm afraid my end is near. The Owls are closing in but I'm not afraid. I know you're close to the Batman so he will protect you I am sure. As much as I appreciated your promise to vote for me in my election. But, you wanna know a secret, Kid? I almost don't want you to. I want you to make your own choice. I want you to craft your own future and pave your own road to a greater tomorrow. If you're an example of what the youth is capable for, then I am ok with leaving everything in your hands. I'm sorry we couldn't get breakfast again. Maybe another time. Until we meet again, keep moving forward, Batman.

You reread the last line again. He knew. He knew and he never said anything. You actually smiled a bit. You folded up the letter again and tossed it onto the counter. You sighed as you looked over to your bedroom. Cassandra was standing there with her arms crossed.

Y/N: Let me guess, back to bed?

Cassandra nodded. You smiled and walked over to her. You kissed her head and climbed into bed. Cassandra joined you soon after but was surprised when you suddenly grabbed her held her closer than before. A bit tighter to.

Y/N: Thanks, for helping out at the Manor. You were a badass.

Cassandra: Thank you.

You hugged her a bit tighter which made Cassandra groan a bit. You loosened your grip and laughed a bit before you looked at her.

Cassandra: You need to be safer.

Y/N: I know. I'll work on that.

Cassandra: You better.

She nuzzled closer to you and looked up at you.

Cassandra: Sleep.

Y/N: Yes ma'am.

Cassandra: We are sleeping in tomorrow.

Y/N: Dont you mean today?

Cassandra: Smart-ass.

She smiled.

Y/N: What if I'm not tired?

Cassandra: I will make you tired.

Y/N: Will you now?

Cassandra: Go to sleep.

Y/N: Alright.

So you did. With the Court of Owls now gone, you were able to rest.
