Dangerous Liaisons
They waited until the sun had completely set to venture into the cemetery. They didn't want to-they couldn't-risk being seen. If anyone saw them, it would be too much of a mess to clean up.
Dr. Adrian Miller walked through the cemetery, followed by Carlisle Cullen. They stopped at the newest grave, the one which had been dug that day. The tombstone belonged Charles "Charlie" Swan, the now former Forks police chief. It was a sad day for the people of Forks; everyone liked Charlie, and no one had a bad thing to say about the man.
"There's no one around, right?" Adrian whispered.
"Yes, I told you I've checked," Carlisle whispered back. "No one is going to know what we did."
"All right." Adrian handed him one of the two shovels he was carrying. "Let's get to it."
The two men dug quickly, and they soon hit the coffin where Charlie's body lay. They lifted it out of the hole, and Adrian quickly opened the lid.
As soon as the coffin was open, Charlie Swan leapt out of the coffin.
"Never ask me to do something like that again," he whispered furiously to Adrian. "Do you have any idea what it's like having to listen to your own funeral, knowing that the people you've known your whole life think you're gone for good?"
"Don't worry, Charlie," said Carlisle. "Everything will be fine now. But you and Adrian have to leave Forks tonight. You know you can't stay."
"Come on." Adrian held out his hand. "I have all your stuff packed and waiting in the car."
Charlie took his hand, and they walked to Adrian's car together.
"So, you'll let me know where you're moving?" Adrian asked Carlisle.
"When we've decided, yes," Carlisle answered. "I think our time in Forks is up; we have to move on now. It'll be sad to leave, but we'll find a new home to love. We always do."
"'Course you will. I'll see you soon, all right? Hey, Carlisle?"
He turned back. "Yes?"
"Thank you. For everything."
Carlisle smiled. "I'll see you soon, Adrian."
After Carlisle left, Adrian got into the driver's seat and turned on the engine. But Charlie didn't get in the car. He stood on the road, staring off into the distance.
"Charlie?" Adrian got out of the car. "What is it?"
"It's everything, Adrian. My life as I knew it is over. I can't even stay here, and this has been my home my whole life. I...I don't know what I'm supposed to do next."
"Hey." Adrian took his hand. "That's what I'm for. We're going to start something new, you and me. No, we won't be able to come back here for a long time, but you have the rest of the world in your sights now, Charlie. We can go everywhere, see and do everything. I just want to do it together."
Charlie looked at him, and Adrian could see worry and fear in his eyes. But he held it back, and he said, "Okay. Let's go."
They both got in the car, and Adrian drove away from Forks.
