Chapter 27

Liam

I don't know what happened.

One minute, things were perfect. The next...

I have no clue how it all went so wrong.

What the hell have I done?

Three hours earlier...

I could tell Mel was confused. The look on her face said it all. I told her nothing about what we would be doing on our date- not what we were doing, not where it would be, nothing. So, naturally, I expected her to have questions when we pulled up outside of the hockey arena.

Her face was full of confusion when I helped her out of the car, but she said nothing as I walked her inside. The questions were stirring in her mind the whole way, though. I know because she kept looking at me, analyzing me, trying to figure out the answer to the puzzle I presented her with.

There were no games at the arena today, no special events, no volunteer programs, no classes, not one thing was scheduled for today. I made sure of it when I picked this day to bring Mel here.

I wanted to make sure no one else was around to mess up what I had planned for her. After seeing Mel with her students and watching as her face contorted with pure bliss as she skated freely around that rink, I knew I wanted to give her more of that feeling. I wanted to see her with that look on her face again as the chilly air nipped around her.

I talked to Coach, Rusty, and the building owners- for a very long time- to convince them to let me rent the space for a few hours so I could make this date happen. After several lectures and mountains of paperwork later, I finally had what I needed to make this date a reality.

I hired one of the light and sound crew members to sit in the operations booth and make my vision for this date come to life. I had mapped out everything, the lighting effects, the music playlist, the empty arena- all in hopes that it would make this date special for Mel.

When I steered Mel toward the team locker room, she eyed me suspiciously. It took all I had not to laugh as I led her inside, where our skates were waiting.

As soon as she saw both sets of skates, her eyes widened. Then, she saw the bouquet of deep purple lilies resting on top of the bench.

She turned to me with a look of awe. "You remembered?" She whispered.

Moving closer to her, I tried to keep my voice steady as I confessed, "I remember all of your favorite things, Mel- the flowers, the taco truck, penguins, your favorite song... I never forgot any of it."

I could see the moisture collecting in her eyes as she took in everything I told her. "You're amazing, Liam. Thank you."

"You're welcome, Mel," I answered, looking down at the floor, suddenly feeling vulnerable.

When I looked back up, she was edging closer- the look in her eyes growing more intense with every step. My arms wrapped around her as soon as she was close enough to let me. With one hand on my chest and the other on my bicep, she leaned up, pressing her lips to mine.

I let my right hand slowly creep up her back as I pulled her to me, deepening the kiss. I heard her gasp when my left hand slid lower, cupping around one cheek of her jean-clad ass.

I was prepared to forget the rest of the date and spend our time doing that instead, but Mel had other ideas.

She pulled away, granting me one last peck before asking, "What do you have in store for us next?"

I kissed her temple as I guided her to the bench so we could change into our skates. "Well, first, we change into those. Then, I take you out to the rink and show you what I have in store."

Mel kept her eyes on me as she toed off her shoes and slid into her skates. Her eyes never wandered as she laced them up. The fire inside her gaze stole my breath and made me hungry for another taste of her juicy lips.

I snapped out of my sinful thoughts long enough to show her to the ice as my hands covered her eyes- not wanting her to see the arena until we were in the center of the rink.

Carefully, I guided her down the hall and toward the ice. The music was playing softly in the background as I leaned in, whispering, "Keep those eyes closed, Mel. I'm going to hold onto you as we skate to the middle."

She nodded, promising to keep her eyes closed. Only then did I drop my hands and place them on her hips, so I could help her balance as we skated to center ice.

Once there, I looked around at the swirling lights. Everything was perfect. With a little help from the lighting crew, I was able to turn the stadium into a starry galaxy. There were projections all around us of nebulas, constellations, and the occasional flickering star.

When I dreamed this up, I never imagined it would look so good. I just hope Mel likes it.

Taking a steadying breath, I lean down, grazing the side of Mel's ear as I say, "Open your eyes."

Her reaction is nothing short of spectacular. When she opens her eyes and looks around the arena, her mouth falls open, and her eyes brighten.

She spins around several times in stunned silence before settling her gaze back on me. "Liam... This is incredible. It's like we're skating on stars."

Her eyes follow a nebula as it projects onto the ice, giving the illusion that we're skating right on top of it.

A joyful laugh leaves her mouth as she looks up at me. "How did you do all this?"

I shrug, attempting to be nonchalant. "I pulled a few strings."

Mel releases another musical laugh as she grabs my hand. We skate around the rink, letting the music fill our ears as constellation after constellation passes us by.

The minutes ticked by as we raced, twirled, and skated to our hearts' content. I asked her to show me one of her routines when a song played overhead- one I knew she'd skated to before.

After giving me a shy smile, she obliged, giving me a solo show of my favorite person in the world as she glided over the ice like she was floating on air. I could watch her all day long. The way her entire body moves so fluidly with the music and the picture of pure happiness on her face is something that could captivate me for a lifetime.

When the song ended, Mel skated over to me with bright eyes and a relaxed smile. "So? What did you think?"

Without missing a beat, I dreamily replied, "Perfect. It was absolutely perfect, Mel. The way you skate... It's so beautiful."

Her head dipped as a blush crept up her neck. "Thank you, Liam."

My legs moved all on their own, bringing me inches away from her. I let my left hand curl around her waist as my right caressed her cheek. Her eyes fluttered shut, and she leaned into my embrace as I did.

Our lips almost brushed when one- or both- of us lost our balance. I felt it as my legs slid from under me, and Mel toppled forward. In seconds, I was flat on my back with Mel sprawled across my chest.

Her eyes were wide with shock as we lay there- stunned. I watched as shock turned into humor as her face contorted and her body shook when she started laughing. The waves of my own laughter weren't far off when the hilarity of our situation hit me.

We stayed like that, laughing maniacally until we couldn't laugh anymore. When we calmed down enough, I got to my feet, helping Mel up as I did.

I took her hand and led her to the team bench, where I stashed a thermos of hot chocolate on our way in. Mel was still catching her breath from our bout of laughter as she sat down next to me.

She looked at me and sighed. "I don't remember the last time I laughed that hard."

"Me either," I told her as I handed her a cup of the steamy chocolate.

She thanked me before taking a sip. "Mmmm. This is delicious. Where's it from?"

I smiled. "It's my mom's secret recipe. Made it from scratch before you woke up."

She watched me in wonderment as her lips curled up. "That's amazing, Liam. This whole day has been."

Something in her voice caught my attention. I set both cups beside me as I studied her face. A new intensity was present in her gaze.

Taking that as my cue, I leaned in, melding our lips together, tasting the sweet chocolate still on her lips. I felt her arms swing around my neck as she pulled me closer. My tongue brushed against her, making her lips part, and allowing me entrance.

She met every stroke with blazing intensity, crashing into me over and over before leaning back on the bench. I followed her lead, positioning myself over her as our mouths intertwined.

I moaned as one of her soft hands twisted into my hair, pulling lightly, making me weak with need. When she responded with an airy cry of her own, it sent pulses right between my legs. My dick twitched between us, aching for more friction.

Mel pulled back slightly. Still smiling, she breathed, "I can't believe we're making out on your team bench."

I chuckled before crashing our lips together again. She was panting as I slowly moved my lips down her neck, nipping and licking as I went. A sharp intake of breath encouraged me to continue.

That is, until I felt her push against me. "Liam. Stop!"

Immediately, I froze. I quickly sat up, wondering what was wrong. Before I could get the words out, Mel wiggled out of my arms and stood from the bench.

"I'm so sorry," she said as tears welled in her eyes.

I went to reach for her, to ask her what was wrong. As I did, she turned and ran. I was stunned for a minute too long as I processed what had just happened.

Did I take it too far? How could I be so stupid?

The rapid questions flooded my mind and held me frozen to my spot. When I regained my senses, I went after her. It was too late.

She was gone.

I tried calling her cell phone- she didn't answer.

I started to panic, worried that something had happened to her. I tried her cell again- straight to voicemail. I texted her.

I nearly jumped out of my skin when my phone buzzed with a reply.

It was from Taylor.

Tay: Hey, Mel just got home. She asked me to tell you. What the hell happened? She was in tears when she walked in.

My stomach dropped. She was safe, but she'd been crying. I sent out a quick reply to Taylor.

Me: I have no idea what just happened...

What the hell have I done?
