Chapter 5

Jenny stared at her reflection and moved a little to her left to see how her knee-length black dress was coming over her body. She paired it with black heels before reaching out for her cream-coloured coat.

Her hair was straightened with minimal makeup while she put on the most expensive perfume in her collection. It was her mom's favourite too. She wonders how her parents would have reacted knowing she was going out with a guy. That too someone as popular as Jason. For a moment she recalls how her dad told her no date until she graduates her college. But then she knew he wasn’t serious even then. She was fairly big enough to decide for herself.

Her phone rang and she had a few knots seeing it was Jason. For a moment she was flustered thinking what it will be like if they become a thing. Spending last night had told her she had been a little judgmental about him.

She walked out of her hostel to see Jason leaning toward a black Porsche. He became a little attentive looking at her and she too was quick to notice the flowers in his left hand. There was something in the air she could tell. Though she tried to stay unaffected, looking at him putting the effort did bring a smile to her face. He was a minute before the time. And, somehow it shows how important she was to him. She could notice they were getting eyes from the people passing by.

“For the girl, I can’t stop thinking,” Jason offered the flowers the moment she came to greet him. She raised her brows getting the flower and noticed how he looked at her from head to toe, "Thank you," She whispered,

"You look good."

He got the door for her and she got in. Placing the flowers on her lap she found him coming in and he was quick to share. “Black  suits you.” Jenny smiled fully aware that black was his favourite colour. Though how she tells herself the fact didn’t affect her choosing the dress was another thing. “Thank you. You look good too but you already know this.” And, this made him look at her. “I won’t mind you telling me this anytime.”

She felt something dark passing his eyes. She knew what she noticed was a pure desire. The guy wasn’t trying to hide it all. Like he knew what he was doing. But of course, she knew it wasn’t going to be physical anytime soon. She couldn’t give her away on the first date. He had to prove his dependability at every step for them to take it to that point.

The car started and the moment they were out of the campus he held her hand. “I am not the guy to hold the hand, Jenny. I am more like to get it on the thigh. You are different. This is for sure.” And, she looked at him. His eyes were focused on the road. There was no smile on his face. His clenched jaw exhibits his control. “I am not.” She replied,

“You are. It had taken me a minute to stop me from telling you I want you out of this dress when I gave you the flowers.” And, Jenny narrowed her eyes. “No, this is not happening soon.” She chuckled at the end.

“But it will happen.” His response removed the smug smile she had on her face. He rubbed his thumb a little on her hand and she bit her cheek. “I guess we will see. So,…” She slowly got her hand out and put it back on her thigh. “…let’s see.” She almost huffed a little and found Jason smirking. “We are not seeing, Jenny. You can’t see it but let me tell you…” She looked at him when he paused while their car came to a red light. He looked at her intently before stating. “…we are already a thing. Naming it or announcing it doesn’t matter when we know what we have.”

And, Jenny wonders if anything can go as planned with him. Because if he was leading it she was going to be committed soon. Not to forget she always had a thing for events to come as unplanned.

“Don’t you think you are being impatient? It’s not like we are running out of time or something.”

“I am not patient, honey. It’s not about time. When I look at you and tell myself I gotta be patient. It does something to me.” Jenny wonders if he was interested only in her because he sees her as a challenge.

“Are you doing all of it thinking I am something you need to get over?” Jason couldn't help the smile. “How I am to know what it is? If it clears, you are the first girl I drove to pick up. So, don’t say you are no different.”

Jenny found herself out of words. Now, it felt like a little red flag. But she too couldn’t expect him to say he loves her. And, maybe she should appreciate him being honest about how he feels.

They pulled in front of the most luxurious apartments and he came to open the door for her. Jenny walked out looking at him. “What if you get captured opening a door for a girl?”

“Well, I am sure everyone has eyes. They can tell you are worth it.” She tried to suppress her smile but Jason was already enjoying looking at her red cheeks.

Words Jenny. He is just using words. Focus on his actions instead. You can’t slip for words. Can you?

It was hard for Jason to not put his hand on her waist. But he knew it was all going to be worth it when he will have access to everything he is aching for. She will give in for him. She will be showing how much she wants him.

Jenny breathed out, “Nice place,” the moment she got into Kiara’s apartment. A few of her friends were drinking and other mutual classmates were hanging in there too. “Jenny,” A Latina woman was the first to walk to them and couldn’t help raising her brows seeing Jason walking beside her. “How are you doing?” Jenny asked,

“Good, but not as you,” She teased and Jenny pressed her lips. It indeed stroked Jason’s ego seeing her all flustered showing him to her friends. “Annie, this is Jason. Jason, she is Annie. We share a history class together.”

“Hello,” Jason said, and Annie quickly shared a side hug with him. Jason looked at Jenny and loved how her smile froze for a moment before she tried to mask her jealousy.

They walked in further and other girls seemed to be coming to them. This time Jason got his arm around her waist. Jenny who got her breath hitched for a moment noticed how it kept the other girls at a distance. “I hope you won’t mind me helping out here.”

There were other couples too. And, though the committed ones who didn’t know Jenny in person didn’t come to say hello. Jenny could notice everyone’s gaze on them. To get it right she offered. “You thirsty?”

“I won’t refuse a drink.” And, she smiled. “Well, if you plan to drop me back. You better not get drunk. Lime water?” And, Jason narrowed his eyes. He hated lime water. “Anything but lime water.” And, she laughed. “Let me see.” They were still to see Kiara. It seems she was somewhere inside and was yet to make an appearance.

Some of their school friends attended the party too and a girl couldn’t help approaching her when she got herself a drink and zero diet coke for Jason. “Jenny, if I am not wrong?” And, Jenny smiled. “Britney? What a pleasant surprise.”

“Nice, what are you doing with Jason?” And, Jenny gulped. She wonders if everyone at the party had the same question. “We are kind of seeing each other.” It was happening. She was talking about it.

“Are you for real? I…whatever.” Britney passed her without saying anything and something heavy fell inside her stomach. She wonder what she meant. She looked at her back where she could spot Jason already standing with two girls but how he looked at her and smiled told her she had his attention. Or how he was waiting for her.

She smiled a little before getting her attention back on the drinks. Closing her eyes she recalled how she was convinced Jason wasn’t right for her. Am I really making a mistake?

She took two glasses and gulped them down to ease the tension. Taking huge gulps of air she got back getting coke for Jason. “Thank you,” Jason said before getting his arm around her again. Jenny could notice how those girls looked at her. As if she didn't belong here. They left soon after and Jason looked at her after taking a sip.

“You know I have an apartment here. We could have crashed at our place if I was too drunk to drive.” And, Jenny smiled. “Not now I guess. But it seems you can take someone if you want to. I mean there are many options available for you.” And, Jason nodded.

“Do you realize it’s because you are not owning what you have?” And, Jenny looked at him. This time when a girl approached Jason saying. “Aren’t you the TikTok celebrity?” Jenny was quick to get her hand on his torso. “Yes, he is.” Jason licked his lips with pride etched on his face. “My baby is learning.” He whispered in her ear.

The girl stood there and had a thing or two to talk about some collab. Jason told her twice to reach him through his email but the girl knew too how to stay persistent. “Would you like a drink?” Jason asked and Jenny looked up. “Yeah, sure.” Jason got away to get her something while she stood there warding off the girl for a few seconds. Jenny was quick to notice Kiara coming and smiled looking her way but she seemed to be busy talking to someone.

Kiara looked ethereal in her dark green Gucci dress. She coupled it with her gold earrings and had her hair down in perfect waves. “Jenny?” She exclaimed the moment she looked at her. Jenny smiled taking a few steps toward her. “Kiara, your place is amazing. When did you set it all?”

“This weekend? It was already furnished. Also, when you got money. There is no such thing as difficult.” Jenny nodded, “Yea, for sure,”

“Here you got it.” Jenny looked to her left where Jason could be seen passing her a glass. She smiled accepting the champagne and looked at Kiara to introduce him. “Jason this is my friend Kiara we were talking about. And, Kiara, this is Jason. But I guess you already know him.” Jenny smiled a little giddy at the end.

“Hi,” Jason offered but Kiara looked too stunned to react looking from Jason to Jenny. “When did it happen?” Kiara asked and Jenny shrugged her shoulders. “Umm, you can say at the weekend. And, you don’t get to be mad. I tried for your number.”

Jenny sipped on the drink and Kiara nodded, “Oh yea. Of course,” Before looking at Jason. “You are welcome, Jason. Now if you will excuse me,”

"At the weekend? So, this is where you think it all started?" Jason asked while Jenny only smiled. "What else I am to tell her? That I let you sneak in my room last night?"

“I don't think I will mind. For how long we are to be here?” Jason whispered in her ear and Jenny looked at him. “Didn’t we get her only?” She asked.

“Well, maybe we can go for a long drive or something else,” Jason suggested.

“At least, eat something,” Jenny offered.

“Nah, I am good.”

Jenny wonder how she could leave the party this soon. Kiara would for sure notice. “Let me go and talk to Kiara?” Jenny finished her drink and Jason got the glass from her hand to pick another for her. “Are you trying to get me drunk?” She joked.

“Don’t worry you are safe with me.”

Jenny did realize it was her fourth drink that too on an empty stomach. Though she believed it was early to leave the part she couldn’t ask Jason to stay if he didn’t want to. And, he was partly right. He didn’t know anyone here. Jenny asked someone where Kiara was and they directed her to the kitchen but one of her classmates, Lily called for her. “Jenny? Where have you been?” Jenny hugged her briefly and got distracted a little but then her eyes fell on a very impatient Jason and she was quick to excuse and chugged her drink down.

She walked into the kitchen area to notice Kiara standing with Britney and another girl. She found Kiara punching the isle and was quick to walk to them asking. “Is everything fine?”

Kiara looked mad when she walked to her. “You are asking this of all the people? You said he isn’t your type. Jenny you know…”

“What? Jason?” Jenny cuts.

“You decided to stab me for a guy who won’t be there for you even for a week. You don’t want this, Jenny. YOU…” But Jenny was quick to retort.

“Calm down, Kiara. I said I am seeing him. And, let me decide for myself.”

“You look like a clown right now,” Kiara yelled.

“What?” Jenny gasped but Kiara was quick to get a hold of a half glass of wine and throw the content on her face claiming. “We are done. Done!”

Jenny looked at her appalled and turned around to walk away. She left her place only to realize at the elevator that she forgot all about Jason.

But there was no way she could see Jason now. How she was to ever explain to anyone that her only best friend wanted her out of her life? It was the last thing she wanted to explain to Jason.

Getting her phone out she texted Jason, “I am leaving,” But the moment she stepped into the elevator she realized someone followed her only to hear. “Jenny?” And, she looked up only to curse inwardly. “I have been calling for you,” Jason complained but gulped looking at her damp face.

Jenny only nodded a little. “I have something important. I will leave.” She said and was about to press the button for the ground floor when Jason held her hand. “I can imagine what happened, baby.” And, Jenny looked at him when he pressed for the highest floor. “I better leave, Jason.”

“Or what?” He challenged.

“Where are we headed to…?” Jenny trailed only for Jason to say. “I have my penthouse here. And, you better let me stay.”

“Jason, I…” She tried to say something but Jason walked to her before getting her hair behind her ear. She got her eyes down but Jason found her damp eyelashes tugging his heart. She seemed to be breaking. And, he didn’t want anything but to make her feel good about her.

He had seen her almost running out of the apartment. And, his feet followed her instantly. And, if he had learned anything. Whenever it comes to this girl. He didn’t have any second thoughts. His eyes, thoughts or feet would follow her instantly.

Jenny was embarrassed to the core and her breath hitched when he got closer holding her face up. “I am sorry if I was the reason behind it, Jenny. But the least I can do is stay here.” His warm breath against her red cheek got something stirring in her. She couldn’t help a tear escape her eye and Jason was quick to get his arms around her waist.

“I will never let you on your own, Jenny.” And, she couldn’t help breaking into his arms. Jason could tell there was something precious in his arms.

Jenny got her fingers fisted in his shirt. And, only for a moment, she wanted to believe that she wasn’t lonely. Jason slowly pulled away getting her cheek rubbed with his. They both got their eyes locked with their mouth almost touching. Jenny’s chest plastered into him was throbbing against him. She blinked a little when Jason crashed his mouth against hers but her hands went to his head in an instant while a powerful surge of want wrapped her consciousness altogether.
