CHAPTER ONE

IT WAS THE final day of school for the entire student body of Derry Middle. Mary Harrington stalked through the halls with black headphones in her ears, playing her favorite song out of her silver Walkman. Technically, it was Andrew's; she just stole it from underneath his bed.
"Have a great summer, Mary!" A blonde girl sarcastically called out to her as she passed by. The brunette turned around to see Greta Bowie slowly walking away, not a care in the world as to what the other girl was doing. Rolling her eyes, Mary back tracked and slowly followed her fellow classmate. The two had been rivals ever since Mary found out Greta was harassing her innocent best friend. The two girls never saw eye to eye in pretty much everything.
A few minutes had passed where Mary listened to the blonde girl making fun of her best friend, Beverly Marsh. Mary couldn't stand listening to it, but Beverly explained to her that she could take care of herself and didn't need Mary's constant protection. Once Greta emerged from the bathroom with her gang following suit, all of Beverly's commands flew out the window. "Hey, Greta." Mary said while slowly stalking up next to the other girl. The brunette rested her left hand on Greta's right shoulder and continued to speak. "Look, before we leave for the summer, I have something that I need to get off my chest."
"Make it fast, Harrington. I have much more important things to deal with than you." Greta spoke while blowing a large pink bubble from the gum in her mouth.
Mary gasped, pressed her hand against her heart, and let out a fake cry. "Ouch. That one actually hurt." She paused when the girls surrounding them began to snicker. "Listen. We need to get something straight. If I ever see you harassing Beverly again, my fist is going to collide with your face. I'm sure you don't want that to happen, now do you?" She added. Slowly, Mary walked backwards with her infamous smirk plastered onto her face. "Have a nice summer now, Greta. I'll miss you oh so very much! Kisses."
She continued walking backwards up until she noticed the blonde girl turning and stomping away from her with a huff. Mary laughed and turned around. Upon doing so, Mary instantly collided with a fellow student whom walking the opposite way. She let out a loud gasp as both of them went tumbling down to the floor with a loud thud. "Hey!" She cried out as she climbed back onto her feet. "Watch where you're going." Mary hissed.
"I-I'm sorry. I didn't m-mean to run into y-you." Bill Denbrough replied while stumbling back onto his feet.
Mary's face fell in realization at who she ran into. "I-It was my bad. Don't sweat it." She sent him a soft smile, and a nod of her head before quickly brushing past him and his group of friends.
Bill Denbrough had very recently lost his little brother, Georgie, in a fatal tragedy. She remembers seeing them run past her house some afternoons after school, giggling like no tomorrow. Andrew had always pushed her to get outside and ask to hang out with them, but Mary was always too shy. 'They'll never like me,' she would cry. Of course, being the kind, older brother he was, Andrew always denied that. It wasn't until October of 1988 when Georgie Denbrough was found missing after falling into the sewer drain that was directly outside of her house. That was when she finally had the guts to go up to Bill Denbrough and apologize for his loss.
As she sauntered down the hallway, Mary reached down towards her back pocket to turn her Walkman on. A flush of panic rushed over her when she realized it was missing. In a frantic motion, her eyes dropped to the floor in search of the small device.
"W-Wait! Mary! You left y-your Walkman." Bill's voice called out from behind her. She instantly let out a sigh of relief as she turned and grabbed it from him. "L-Led Zeppelin. They're a g-good band."
She let out a soft chuckle. "You're an actual life saver." Mary breathed. "And they're my favorite band." She sent him a smile before adding, "Have a good summer, Bill. I'll see you around."
"S-See you!" He called out as he watched her continue to stalk down the hall.
A few seconds after departing from Bill, Mary caught up to Beverly. "Hey, Bev." She spoke with a smile as the two walked together. "Phew, you smell like garbage. What happened to you?"
"Greta Bowie poured actual shit on my backpack." Beverly shivered at the thought. "Anyways, you know she said sorry just now? You didn't have anything to do with it, right?" Beverly asked, crossing her arms and looking at her best friend.
Mary laughed. "She deserved it! Nobody messes with my best friend like that."
"You're too much, Mary." Beverly chuckled along.
The two of them walked out of Derry Middle School together just talking about random things that either of them could think of. As they stepped outside and were about to part ways, they both agreed that they needed to hang out that summer. "We can't let our friendship fade." Mary spoke.
"I'll come over in like an hour or two. Sound good?" Beverly asked as she glanced around at the kids who ran past the two of them.
Mary nodded her head. "Sounds good. Look, I gotta motor. Bowers will get mad if I'm late. See you later, Bev."
The two hugged and shared their farewells before Mary turned, and walked towards the front of the school. Her eyes caught sight of the red camaro that belonged to her brother, Andrew, and the blue car sitting behind it owned by Belch. With a sigh of relief, she began to walk in the direction of the vehicles.
She stopped shortly after when noticing that there was nobody in either cars. Instead they were on her right, harassing the same people Mary had run into just minutes prior, the Loser's Club.
Henry Bowers walked up to Richie Tozier and shoved him and his friend, Stanley Uris, straight to the floor. Then, Patrick Hockstetter took Stan's kipper from his head and chucked it into a moving bus that was passing by. Following, Belch walked up an unsuspecting Eddie Kaspbrak and burped directly into his face. Mary then gained the courage to storm in and push Bowers with all of her might.
"What the hell, Mary!" Bowers screamed. She stood her ground between him and Bill. "Get out of the way." He spoke after calming down a little bit. With a shake of her head, Mary crossing her arms and continued to make the other boy angry.
Finally, Andrew stepped up. "Mary, come on."
"No. You guys aren't going to persecute them like this. They're innocent."
Finally, Bowers snapped. He rushed forwards, and went to shove the young girl out of the way. Without hesitation, Mary dodged him and sent a fist flying straight into his face. "Mary!" Andrew screamed before springing to his sister, and pulling her away from Bowers's reach.
"Control your sister, Harrington!" Bowers shouted.
Finally unlatching herself her brother's grasp, she pointed her finger at Bowers. "He's not your bitch, Bowers, and neither am I."
Without another word, Mary Harrington turned and stalked all the way to her brother's car.
