Chapter 17
Elena Sergio.
The same day, the same pattern. I tried to balance my school bag and my books in my hands as I walked into the school premises. For a moment I was feeling positive. Everything that morning went on smoothly and I wasn't bothered about the possibility of things going wrong.
My self-esteem was in check, together with my pride. Striking my pose into the building in my black hoodie and blue short skirt, I walked towards my locker to get my books for class.
Matthews approached me. He seemed unworried and energetic this morning. The way he skipped his feet while he walked along the corridor to get to his locker made me assume he just won something big. I was glad our differences were settled. I disliked when we fight for meaningless reasons, especially when we have a different perspectives about things and different ideologies. We can't always agree on what a party would say but we don't impose our opinions on another.
"What's up with you today?" I had to ask when he reached his locker which was beside mine. His smile was everything. It brought out his eyes and he looked cute in his white shirt and shorts. I found it kind of weird to admire your best friend. For me, it triggered feelings that aren't supposed to be felt or made the conversation between Matthews and me weird.
"I'm just glad we are over our argument," He replied while he jammed his locker to close after taking his books for our first class that morning. I could relate to what he was feeling. My excitement was present when he mentioned that we were over our argument. I respected him for taking a bold step to resolve our issues amicably and also for the gifts. I was scared of hurting his feelings when I rejected the gift politely. It must have taken him a lot of work to find me something pretty but I didn't fancy the kind of shoe he got me, especially when it was obvious that it was heels. The heels were safe wherever I kept them.
He was already ahead of me with his steps while he walked to class. I wasn't in a rush like him so I took my time to adjust my hair by looking at my pocket mirror in my locker and also getting the right books to learn with. Something was weird about my mirror. I could see Kadjiri's image reflecting from it while I looked into the mirror for a proper checking up. It caused me to turn back just to see him coming from the main school entrance. He had his black bag strapped on his shoulder while he bounced in his steps, exchanging greetings with everyone who stopped him. He was the most popular kid.
He was heading in my direction but this wasn't a perfect time for me to see his face. I couldn't help myself from taking a glimpse even though I was super mad at what he did to me. I needed him to understand my point of view and be truthful. He never took me seriously and kept to his words which hurt me even more.
Our eyes met and his walking pace reduced. I knew within myself that this wasn't going to end well if he approached me. As I knew KJ a little bit, talking to him face to face after a fight, painted a weird image in my head. The fact that my words might not come out right and I won't be able to maintain eye contact. The best thing I could do was ignore him and walk away.
I took my advice. I closed my locker after getting my things done, pretending not to even see his face at all. As prepared as I was, I walked straight to class, took a seat at my favorite table, and waited for the teacher to arrive. Matthews and I usually don't seat down together in class for we were known as noisemakers since we started high school.
Sitting down together made us involved in gossip and unnecessary talks while classes went on. Matthews always made funny jokes to crack me up in class and I wasn't able to contain my laughter most times. I'd oink like a pig when it becomes uncontrollable to keep in and we would both be sent into detention.
Ever since we both decided to sit at separate tables to stop being a distraction to each other. I picked the front seat to get a better view of the board and the teacher while Matthew went for the middle row.
As we waited for our first subject teacher to come into class, Kadjiri walked in with a weird expression on his face. His eyes wandered around the room as he searched for something which wasn't seen. I couldn't tell what he was feeling but I tried not to be noticed by him. I wasn't sitting at the center of the class but at the edge where I got the best window view in the house. I stared in that direction most times to avoid being noticed or to clear my head a bit.
I felt the breeze that followed when someone walked passed me. My senses were triggered and I hoped in my heart that it wasn't who I thought it was. I felt someone's presence beside me while I looked through the window. The seat beside me was adjusted a bit and it caused me to find out who it was.
"Hey," He greeted. It had to be KJ. There were so many seats in the house but he decided to pick the one beside me. I ignored him and pretended not to hear. Just about the time, he was about to say something else which I assumed was an apology, the teacher walked in to take us to his class. What a relief. I turned my focus to the teacher and at that moment, nothing else mattered but my studies.
It pained me when I realized I had more classes to go through with him. If only the day could end faster and I could run from this seat. After the first class, other classes kept happening back to back as the teachers planned for it. Immediately one was done, and the next followed as he waited at the door. I took a deep breath and exhaled loudly. What manner of sorcery is this?
Finally time for a break. I didn't wait for the teacher to leave when I had to stand up from my seat. Anything bringing Kadjiri and me together, I tried so much to avoid. Conversations with him weren't needed and I needed my mind not to be limited. I rushed to see Matthews and tried to engage in a talk with him. That way, even if Kadjiri looked at me, within him he'd know I needed not to talk to him at all.
With his head facing down a bit and his hood covering his head, he carried his bag and headed out of the class. This made was made differently. The only day I didn't rush to the cafeteria to get a meal to eat, probably I wasn't hungry. I noticed he was gone and it brought me peace. I closed my eyes for a second to ease my mind from the weird tension I had within me.
"Is everything alright?" Matthews wondered at me with a shocking gaze. It interrupted me from my peace process and I frowned at him.
"You could see I was trying to cool my head," I attacked him with my words a bit. I hate when my peace break got interrupted.
"Sorry, your royal highness. I didn't know you had to take your peace break," He decided to be sarcastic while he packed his final books on the table.
I rolled my eyes but couldn't get mad at him. We just had a reconciliation not quite long, fighting won't be worth it. I went back to my seat to get my books in my hands before I forget them on my desk.
"I didn't see you talk to KJ though. Trouble in paradise?" Matthews decided to seek answers he wasn't supposed to find. In as much as I avoided anything related to KJ, he had to be the first to bring it up.
"Nothing! Everything is fine!" I almost went high-pitched while I tried to lie. It wasn't my thing to be dishonest but he needed not to know. He planned on adding to his questions but I didn't give him that platform. I picked up my notes and walked out of the class fast. That was a close call but I worked it out like a boss.
I walked back to my locker, feeling unbothered. I planned to drop my book back where they came from and get myself lunch at my usual joint. I was pulled into room remorse which made me lose balance at that point. For a second, I was about to scream, seeking help from the danger my senses picked just for me to see who I was avoiding the whole damn morning.
"What's your problem? Why'd you pull me into the class like that?" I questioned KJ seriously. I disliked being rough handled and I demanded an explanation for this uncalled act.
"You won't want to talk to me so I had to get you one way or another," It wasn't a convincing answer even though I ignored him on purpose. I rolled my eyes which seemed like I was disgusted by his presence. "Would you at least talk to me or hear me out?"
"If I wanted to, I'd keep on hearing how sorry you were and how you had things to do. It's always the same story over and over again. I'm sick of it," I needed to be honest with my feelings.
"Would you have preferred if I lied to you about my intentions on whereabouts? I'm not that kind of person Elena." I wanted to believe him and it was working so quickly. What has this cute boy done to me?
"I don't know what to believe Kadjiri. Maybe we shouldn't have kissed in the first place," I felt like the problem was coming right from that incident. Probably if I didn't have that special moment with him in his house, I won't be in this situation. Funny enough how we weren't dating but we were having issues similar to relationship problems.
"I wouldn't have kissed you if I didn't feel anything for you," He didn't have to be so sweet at this point. So irresistible! He walked closer to me and I could feel his skin gaining contact with mine. He held me closer by the waist and pulled me towards his chest. My heart raced faster than usual. I tried to break out from that tight spot but his actions felt so right.
"I won't pull you closer to my side if I didn't feel anything for you," he said while his hands settled on my waist. I looked up straight to his face, gazing at his lips as I wanted to have a taste so badly. He knew his ways around me and it kept me pleasures I couldn't resist. It felt right but he needed to be wrong but I couldn't help myself.
Finally, I broke free when I had the chance. My mind needed to have a rethink of what I was getting myself into. I felt gullible and miserable but it was good. I saw the good in my bad feelings which were weird at my point. It took me nothing when I rushed back to hug him so closely.
"I love you," I muttered while I hugged him but my eyes caught something else. Matthews walked in on us as we were in a situation he wasn't supposed to see. I broke free from KJ, pretending to dust my dress since I acted so guilty. I wasn't sure if I did something wrong but my best friend's eyes kept telling me a different story.
