Chapter 44 - Darkness

Chapter 44 - Darkness

Third person

She hears his footsteps walk in as the door opens. Lying still,
She hopes that maybe he will leave her alone if she looks like she's asleep.

"Beatrice, I know you're awake. You're really not very good at acting." He says in a motherly tone.

She continues to stay silent and lay still with her eyes closed lightly.

'I don't care what he does to me.' She mentally sighs.

The other cells that once housed her mother and father along with her older brother Caleb and his wife Cars who carries their daughter, have been empty for who knows how long.

David told her they're dead.

She doesn't want to believe him.

But also doesn't believe that they're still alive.

'Who cares what happens to me now.' Are her thoughts.

David comes at her and her eyes fly open, completely alert.

'Dauntless training taught me a lot, but it didn't teach what to do when you're being held captive, basically dead, and have no means of survival.' She thinks in the back of her mind

She rolls to her side and cowers into a ball, few tears slipping from her eyes as her stomach turns and causes her to gag; nothing in her stomach to actually come up. She hasn't been able to keep a single piece of bread down in what must have been months.

He wins, cuffing her hands and legs to the bars that attach the cells to the left and right of her together.

She pulls against the chains lightly, but her weakness makes her arms feel like thin twigs as she gives in to the restraints.

"They're getting ready to come save you, Beatrice." He bends down to her level at the ground. "At that point in time, my life will be over. Derrick has already escaped, and as for you and me, well, we're the only ones left."

She's unable to speak, her voice caught in her throat.

He reaches behind him and pulls out a little container.

Memories flash behind her eyes from him dumping its contents on her leg before.

Salt.

Salt on an open wound like her leg, must be as bad as death itself.

David smirks, dumping the container upside down.

She pulls against the cuffs in pure agony, screaming as the burning pain takes over her leg and travels through her body.

Her voice fades from her voice completely dying out.

She's screamed so much that her voice has just about given up and has lost her.

"Now, Beatrice. I've been experimenting with this for the past few years you've been here, but I've never had I gotten it right. I tried it out on you a couple times, and you already know that. This one is just very different than those."

She sighs painfully, the pain still burning her leg.

"I know the other one has been working because your voice is leaving you, and you can't even eat. The only things I can't test are your vision and hearing because my whole group has ran."

She looks at him, really not caring.

'I'm going to die before anyone comes to save me anyways. He's going to wait and finish me off at the last second.' She thinks.

"This is for if you do survive and make it out of here alive. What it does is target all of your five senses along with your ability to speak, to move your fingers and your ability to keep food down. It doesn't specifically target your ability to think, but loosing the rest of your senses will eat your mind alive anyways."

She closes her eyes, breathing heavily. Her heart seems to already be struggling to beat with each breath it takes.

"It will also make your heart stop three times as long as it's in your system. It can stay in your system for as long as eight years."

She whimpers lightly, her leg aching as her injured muscles contract uncontrollably.

"Why I'm telling you this you might wonder? Because your voice won't come back, but if your head is on straight, this information will eat you alive because you won't be able to tell anyone. Nor will your fingers work, so you won't be able to write it down either."

'Just kill me already.' She thinks.

He bends down and holds her head.

She's given up fighting him when he does this. It's just a small amount of liquid and then he leaves.

She doesn't have the energy to fight anyways.

"Did I forget to add that I'm giving you enough to make it last eight years? It isn't a serum either, Beatrice. Good luck defying this one. You body already has proved that you are not immune to it."

She throws her head out of his hands as soon as the cold metal meets her one nostril.

Fear trickles down her spine as her new fear of things in her nose has formed since he has started doing this to her.

He repositions his hand on her forehead and she cannot move at all. He sticks the small pieces of plastic up both sides of her nose and then tapes them over her nose.

She gasps one lasts breath of oxygen from her mouth before he tapes her mouth shut, leaving her only option to breathe through the plastic things filling her nose.

She holds her breath, not wanting to breathe.

She can't last long though.

She'll have to breathe eventually.

David takes a deep breath, mocking her ability not to breathe.

Clicking on a little motor, stuff starts to gush into her nose.

"I'll take the tape off of your mouth once you breathe in, Beatrice."

She shakes her head no, tears falling down her face as the powder-like concoction goes into her nostrils.

"Lucky for you, it's also giving you oxygen through all of the stuff. You won't die from oxygen loss even if you cannot breathe through your mouth."

Her lungs scream for air as her nose clogs with the powder, mucus carrying it slowly down the back of her throat.

She can't take it anymore. She breathes in through her nose and then screams through the tape on her mouth in her exhale.

David was right though, the little pieces of plastic in her nose give her oxygen as she breathes through the powder, her head pounding as her lungs still scream.

"Nope. The tape is staying on. Sorry little girl, I must have lied. I'll see you in a few hours. Sit tight now. Take a nap... Or something. I don't know what you do for fun these days." He walks out of the room, leaving her there as she tastes her nose bleeding down the back of her throat.

.

She sits up, gasping, her nose burning from her dream.

She looks around frantically, needing somewhere to hide.

The bed is on the ground, making her unable to hide under it.

She scrambles over to the back corner of the room by a small radiator, hiding between the space in between the big pieces of metal and the light grey wall.

She shivers, the radiator giving off no heat for the moment.

There's no blankets in the room either.

'We don't know how insane she might me. She could try to choke herself with them or something. We have to monitor her more before giving her some.' She hears the one woman's voice in her head from earlier yesterday.

She sighs, wrapping her arms around her right knee and resting her head on it, her baggy light blue shirt and black sweatpants creating no warmth on her small, sickly body.

'What it does is target all of your five senses along with your ability to speak, to move your fingers and your ability to keep food down. It doesn't specifically target your ability to think, but loosing the rest of your senses will eat your mind alive anyways.' She hears his words in her mind.

'I can't speak, or eat, and why my vision is getting weaker and weaker.' She thinks to herself, sinking into the wall, wishing to disappear into it.

Her thoughts are erupted when someone walks into the room.

Judging by her dark vision, it's that man that she met yesterday.

She presses herself further into the wall between the radiator and the wall, trying to hide from him.

'I want Tobias.' She thinks as she clenches her eyes shut and hides into the wall. Her leg throbs with the action, but it doesn't make her stop.

"Tris. You're going to hurt yourself. Please come out." He says walking over to her swiftly in two steps from the room being small and his legs being long.

"Are you cold? I can turn on the radiator if your cold. It is pretty cold in here." He asks her, bending behind the radiator to turn it on.

It crackles, then hums to life.

The sound terrifies Tris, her heart leaping as she half jumps, half crawls quickly to the other side of the room. She curls into a ball on the floor, hiding her face into the small, makeshift mattress that contains no blankets or sheets at its spot on the floor.

She panics, in desperate need for a new, safe place to hide. She struggles with the mattress, trying to move it from its place in the floor.

"Okay, it's alright. I'll turn it off. We just can't give you blankets until we've observed you for a little longer, Tris." He walks over towards her, and she cowers to the corner, moving away from the mattress and expecting him to pull something out and hit her with it.

"I'm going go find out what's wrong with you, Tris." He pauses, realizing what he said could be taken in a rude tone. "What I mean is that I've noticed that this isn't you, and especially with how I've heard that you were doing so much better, well, I'm going to get to the bottom of it. Until then, you just have to trust me."

He pauses, thinking about what to say to her next.

She blinks, looking up at him, her vision almost black.

Blinking rapidly, she can just barely see the outline of his face as he speaks again.

"I met your boyfriend, Four yesterday evening. Him and I are working together to figure out what has happened to you."

She opens her mouth to speak, but her voice just doesn't come.

"Because some side effects you are having are obviously normal; but some of them I'm realizing are being left unnoticed."

Her world goes fuzzy as her breathing increased along with her hearing. Her heart pounds deeply in her chest as fear rises in the back of her throat.

"At least you can hear and see me alright. That's one thing that can be checked off of the list."

Her world goes completely black.

But her doctors will never know, because David too was a doctor, and he made sure her eyes wouldn't glass over when blindness would overtake her.
