Chapter 20 - She's a Fighter

Chapter 20 - She's a Fighter

Caleb

"Christina and Will are going to be coming to visit today." I tell Cara as I hand her Bea.

That seems to have already become her nickname after three days; Baby Bea.

"You're going to get to meet Uncle Will and Aunt Christina today, Bea!" Cara smiles down at Beatrice. I'm sure Cara knows that Christina isn't her actual Aunt, but she might as well be. Plus, in the future, even if her and Will don't stay together, it would make more sense for Bea to call her Aunt Christina over Miss or Mrs. Christina.

We both sit around talking until Will and Christina show up around ten that morning. When they show up, Beatrice is now in my arms.

"Cara!" Will runs over and wraps his sister in an embrace. They probably haven't seen each other in at least four years.

Christina stands there somewhat awkwardly, but then walks over to me.

"Hi." She says simply and smiling at me.

"Hello." I smile back.

She looks down at Beatrice in my arms and smiles. "Congratulations."

Once Will and Cara separate, Christina goes over and hugs Cara.

"I don't believe we have really officially met. I'm Will." Will comes over and smiles at me.

"I'm Caleb. I feel like I know you a lot more than I actually do from hearing so much about you from Cara. It's nice to finally actually meet you, Will."

"Do you want to hold her?" I ask him.

"Of course." He says and I hand him Beatrice.

Cara and Christina are both over across the room having a conversation about something. Will starts to walk over by them, and I follow him. I don't think he realizes that Bea looks just like Tris. It probably has been a really long time since he's seen Tris.

"Can I hold her?" Christina asks after a few minutes.

"Of course." Cara says.

Will gently passes Bea over to Christina and the second she gets a good look at her she gasps.

I knew she'd recognize her.

"What?" Will asks.

"She looks just like Tris, but smaller. Their eyes; they have to be identical."

"That's why she looked familiar for some reason." Will says in awe to no one in particular.

After adoring over the baby for a few minutes, Christina finally asks, "What's her name?"

I look at Cara, silently telling her to tell them.

"Beatrice." Cara smiles.

"You named her after Tris?" Will seems somewhat surprised.

Cara nods.

"That's so sweet." He says.

I look at Christina and I think she is speechless.

Will and Christina stick around for a few hours but then eventually leave because of Beatrice getting fussy and because they both were going back to the Dauntless compound today.

It's nearing three o'clock in the afternoon when there's a soft rapping on the door. It's quiet enough that it doesn't wake sleeping Beatrice.

It's probably another doctor or nurse or someone checking in on Cara and Beatrice.

"Come in!" Cara calls.

I don't believe it at first, but in comes my father pushing my mother in a wheelchair. They both have a very happy, glowing look to them that I never would see often in Abnegation, but love to see now.

"Hi." I smile walking up and bending down to give my mother a hug in the wheelchair, then stand up and hug my father.

"How are you doing, Cara?" My mother asks.

"Pretty good. The baby is doing good too. She's such a happy little girl."

I watch my mother's facial expressions and just how she looks. I feel so stupid for not realizing how much Tris looks like my mother, and how much my daughter looks like my sister who looks like my mother.

Now that is a confusing statement.

"Do you want to hold her?" Cara asks my mother.

"Of course!" She replies.

It takes her a second, but she notices it way quicker than the rest did; running her thumb over Beatrice's small cheek, then nose and lips. The sleeping baby awakes and opens her eyes. That's when I can see my mother's heart literally melt.

She doesn't talk for a minute or two. My father looks over her shoulder down at Beatrice and I can see that he knows the face as well. They both are quiet, speechless perhaps.

"She looks just like your sister did when she was born, just a little bit bigger." Dad is the first to finally speak, and my mother nods at his comment.

"What's her name?" My mother finally asks the question.

Cara gives me a knowing glance. "Your turn." She jokes.

I take a deep breath. "Beatrice." I search their faces for their reactions.

Tears fall silently from my mother's cheeks as a smile comes across their face. My father just stands in shock, no expression is really on his face until a smile slowly forms while he looks down at Beatrice in my mother's arms. I don't think I've ever seen my father cry. Not at his brother's funeral, not when he was told by Tris that my mother had "died", not ever until now. Now is that one time.

"Here. Can you hold her?" My mother hands Beatrice to my father, which he gladly takes her.

"Come here." She waves me towards her. I walk up to her and she wraps her arms around me. I smile, hugging her back.

She finally releases me and the look of realization strikes her face.

"You haven't heard, have you?" I hear her heart sink in the tone of her voice.

"Heard what?" I hear Cara ask.

"About Beatrice. Well, not baby Beatrice, but your sister Beatrice."

"What happened?" I feel my palms begin to sweat.

"They did a scan on her brain yesterday. They found out that she was in a coma. Way before you two showed up, she was conscious when she first arrived. They'd-- they'd beat her to a bloody pulp every day. Not like they were once you guys where there, but way worse. One day they brought her back, and she was barely conscious. After that day she was unconscious for who knows how long. She had only woken up probably days or weeks before you guys showed up. Before the scan, she was in pretty rough shape and freaking out. They started letting Four sit with her because his presence seemed to calm her down. Last night, after the scan, they let him sit with her, just like usual. She had three panic-attacks while he was there, the first one he calmed her down, b- but--" my mother breaks out into tears.

My father finishes her sentence. "During the second time, her heart stopped, three times. She's alive right now, don't worry. During the third one, her heart stopped another two times and she's unconscious." He stops and takes a deep breath. "They've moved her to the ICU unit of the hospital now. They think it may be because of all of the stress she's in that her heart just can't handle it. Last we've heard, she's still unconscious, but it's for the best because when she wakes up its going to be rough for her." He looks down at baby Beatrice and runs his thumb over her cheek.

I hear Cara's breathing waver as I feel hot tears run down my cheeks.

She can't die.

Not now.

She just can't.

"Wh-- Who told you all of this?" Cara asks, her voice wavering.

"We ran into Four on the way here. They aren't letting anyone near her now. Her heart hasn't stopped since, so we can just hope that it stays this way." My father says.

"She's strong and a fighter, I know. I'm just scared that she won't be able to pull herself out of this one." My mother says, her voice strained.

I'm just scared for her sake.

Yes, she's strong.

Yes, she is one heck of a fighter.

Yes, everyone has their time of weakness.

But, this is more than just one time of weakness, and it's going to take more than one moment of strength to pull her out.

I know she can do it.

At least I hope so.
