CH. 8 Living Stories

"We'll make camp. You can clean the rabbit from that trap we found. I gotta run. My wolf wants to go screw around with the wolf borns." Frank said shrugging out of the backpack. "Plus it'll let me see if he ran to them for help."

"We camping here?" Mac asked as Frank pulled off his shirt and tossed it on the backpack.

"No. Back at the place we found the blood." Frank said. He pulled off his belt. His pants unbuttoned he lifted a foot. He unlaced his boots.

"Raw or you wanna fire?"

"Fire. If he's alive it could draw him in." He said kicking the jeans off. "Not likely but he can't maintain his link with his wolf with the poison in his body. He'll try to find help."

His back was to Sara. She couldn't look away. He was the second man she had seen naked in the past day and a half. Clothed he had seemed larger. Now he looked skinny, pale, and weak. He still looked scary. That scar managed to give him an air of menace.

She watched as he flexed his shoulder blades.

Sebastian limped back through the curtain to the main area. He turned off the camp light and placed it on the counter. His thigh ached relentlessly. He sat on the bed and leaned against the wall behind the bed. Even without the hoodie he felt hot. Sweat beaded his forehead.

Sara watched as the man's body flexed. The air in her lungs stalled in her chest as he dropped to his knees. His arms jerked. His legs twitched. The bones in his hips shifted. His profile darkened as fur pushed out of his skin.

Sara's heart thundered in her ears. Her ears rang. She clutched at the tree. A breeze blew her hair. The scent of musk, burnt sugar, stagnant water, and wet wool assaulted her. She closed her eyes.

She was sure she had completely gone crazy. She blinked. But the brown wolf still stood where the man should have been.

"I'll get the food on. If you find him howl. He couldn't have gone far, not with the wolfsbane and silver in his blood." Mac told the wolf. He reached down picked up the clothes, pack and boots.

The wolf exploded in motion. The man didn't even watch as it streaked away and though the trees. He calmly turned and walked back the way they had came.

Sara remained for a moment. Her mind refused to wrap around what she had seen. Even Evodin mumbled about it trying to understand it.

As a kid Sara heard stories of blood thirsty creatures that shift from man to wolf by the light of the full moon. The problem with that... The moon had hours before it would appear and she didn't believe in werewolves.

That she learned in the instatute. Kim claimed to be a werewolf. She would bite anyone who came close enough. She bit Sara once. Sara had been ten and Kim had been 14. The staff had to pull the two girls apart. Sara yelled at the girl even as the staff pulled her out of the room.

"If your a werewolf then why don't you change with the moon! Because it's not real!" Sara bit the hand that tried to cover her mouth. "None of its real! Do you hear me! FAKE, FAKE, FAKE!" She kicked. She couldn't see Kim any more but didn't care. She had been beoynd angry. She had been put in the pillow room for hours.

That was when a new nightmare started.

It was a week later she saw Kim. "You're just as crazy as me, kid. At least I know it, even if I can't control it." Kim bent closer. "Next time I'll bite your ear off." She giggled.

"Try it and I'll break your nose." Evodin said using Sara's lips. Sara turned and fled.

She climbed down the tree and ran as fast as she could. Her speed was slower then she would have liked but she worked more on being quiet and leaving as little evidence of her passage as possible.

Sebastian tried to stay awake. Over half of the day had slipped away. Sleep's claim was complete and lasted for hours.

He woke when he felt a presents hovering above him. He forced his eyes to open and looked up into near darkness. He vaguely recognized her silhouette. He moved his tongue around in his mouth trying get rid of the sleep mouth.

"Get up." She demanded. He blinked up at her. His mind not fully coherent. "What's wrong with you? Get. Up." She demanded angrily.

"Hot." Was the only thing he managed to voice. He wanted to ask why the room felt like an oven.

"You were fine this morning. Get up. We need to talk."

He was very aware that his leg had caught fire. Unfortunately he couldn't move to put it out. The taste in his mouth was like raw ginger root. His heart hit his chest with enough force that he worried about his ribs. His throat felt dry and cracked. "Water."

She walked to the counter turned on the lamp and put water from the jug in a cup.

She wasn't happy about having to help him hold the cup. When her hand brushed his cheek she hissed.

"Your burning." She helped him drink the water and even helped him drink half a second cup.

She sat the cup on the floor and started pushing and pulling his body. He tried to push her away but at the moment she was stronger.

"Stop it." She told him sternly. She pulled his sweat pants down. Her hands felt cold as she unwrapped the bandage covering his thigh.

"Sebastian?"

He forced his eyes open. He looked at her and his heart flipped.

"I'm sorry. I don't know what to do." The fear he had seen in her eyes turned out to be deeper in her voice. "It's black."

Black? Did she mean the the wound? No. Wolfsbane? Damn. He needed the pack doctor.

He closed his eyes. He felt like he was drifting in black clouds. It felt good.

"Sebastian! Answer me!"

He opened his eyes. What? He wanted to ask but he didn't need to because she answered the unspoken question anyway.

"Help - phone number - family. Town - but I can -"

He didn't hear everything she said but he understood enough. It took him a minute to push the phone number passed his lips. It took even more of his strength that grab her wrist as she started to stand. "Tell - them, - Haley's Comet." He dropped his hold. His eyes closed as his strength gave out.

I usually name chapters because it makes it easier to find your place if your app temporarily malfunctions or real-life pulls you away. I plan on naming the chapters from this point on (any suggestions message me) and at some point the previous chapters (again, suggestions - message me). I've been trying to get this written and chapter names have slipped my mind.

Also, I'm not pleased with the current name for this novel. It's too long, for one thing. So I'm sending you all on a mental quest... Find a new name for this novel. Whoever comes up with the best name will have a chapter dedicated to to them.

If you're enjoying the novel let me know, vote, comment, store in your reading list, and tap the share button.
