CH. 2 Changes

Her father did come. He looked so different from the last time he visited. His skin had become pale and wrinkle. His blond hair looked dull. His bright blue eyes were no longer bright. He had lost so much weight that he appeared to be nothing but skin and fragile bone.

He took her home the next day. It wasn't the home she remembered. It wasn't even the same city. Worse it wasn't her mother that stood in the foyer when he opened the door.

His new wife, Gloria, smiled as they were introduced. She gushed how happy she was to meet her. She said she was happy she was home.

Evodin hated the woman. So Sara loved her as soon as Evodin professed her hatred.

The next six weeks passed in a blur. Sara learned her dad had cancer. At most he had a year of life left. Gloria had been his nurse but he married her after six months.

She had been home two months and hated seeing her father deteriorate day by day. He could no longer walk around. He hated the wheelchair and spent most of his time in his big blue lazy boy chair.

"Were going shopping." Gloria said and placed an air kiss over his forehead. She looked up at his new nurse, Anna. "Call my cell if you need me." She said. Her tone made it clear that she meant it. Anna nodded.

They didn't go shopping. They went to a local hotel. Sara was told to "Wait here." in the lobby.

She waited. Evodin muttering in her head. Thirty minutes passed. An hour passed.

Gloria returned smiling. She smelled of cologne, a musky smell and tobacco. Evodin was growing at the woman. She called her names. She urged Sara to scratch out her eyes.

They drove to the mall.

"Let's not tell daddy we stopped at the hotel. I don't want him to worry." Gloria said as she paid for Sara's clothes and toys.

Gloria took her on all of her 'errands' that first led to a hotel. Toys, books, clothes, and gadgets always followed those 'errands'.

The first gadget had been a small computer. Gloria had been terrified Sara would tell what had happened.

They had walked into a hotel lobby. She had been talking to Gloria. But a man walked up and wrapped his arms around Gloria from behind. He was taller and had clean cut blond hair, green eyes and a black suit with a red tie.

He nibbled her neck and asked, "Who's this?" His eyes boring into Sara.

"Leave her alone Lonny." She said turning in his arms. She pushed against his chest. "She's waiting here."

Lonny would not allow that. He said she'd wait in the living room of the suite.

Alone she waited on the sofa in the suite. She heard yells, screams, cries, moans, and grunts from the room.

Thirty minutes later Lonny came out of the room, alone.

He was naked. Sara looked away. He moved towards her. She closed her eyes. He gripped her chin forcing her head up.

Her face burned. Evodin ragged in her head.

"Open them." He demanded.

She didn't. She heard the toilet flush from the in suite bathroom.

Cold wet lips settled over her mouth. His tongue probed at her lips.

"What the fuck are you doing?" She heard Gloria demand. She heard a loud smack and his hand and mouth were gone.

Sara still didn't open her eyes. Her whole body was shaking. Her head was dizzy.

"She's a kid!" Gloria yelled.

"Oh, come on. I was kidding." Lonny pleaded as he laughed.

Gloria told him he was banned from using Lavish Summit ever again.

She heard them move into the bedroom. She blocked out all three voices. Lonny, Gloria, and Evodin. She concentrated on not shaking.

She didn't know how long she sat there. "Let's go." Gloria demand. She grabbed Sara's arm and they ran to the car. She drove to the mall looking over her shoulder the whole way.

"You can't tell your dad what happened, Sara. We won't see Lonny again. Okay. You know your daddy is sick. You tell him about Lonny it would kill him. You don't wanna do that, right? You can't tell any anyone. You know I like you. Right? I don't want anything to happen to you, but you tell and I'll tell them you're lying and hearing voices in your head again. We'll have to put you back in that place again." She kept talking the entire drive to the mall.

Sara couldn't even tell the voices apart but the time they arrived.

Sara pulled her through the building. Gloria shopped. Sara followed in shock.

In the car Gloria had pushed the computer box in her lap. She didn't say it was a 'keep your mouth closed' gift but she didn't have to.

True to her word Sara never saw Lonny again. But she saw others. There was only one other time that one of the men made a pass at her. He did it in front of Gloria.

Gloria said "Out."

Sara left to stand at the other side of the suite door. But she could hear every sound from the other side of the door.

He too was told he could never use Lavish Summit again.

Her father had died just a week later. Gloria seemed to shrink.

Sara heard her crying at night. She wondered if maybe Gloria had loved her dad. For weeks Gloria had no hotel 'errands'. Eventually the 'errands' resumed.

Within six months she was alone except for the voice in her head. Gloria had disappeared. She had gone out to meet with a 'Lavish Summit' customer.

At thirteen Sara knew she couldn't call the police. They would lock her away. Within two months all the utilities had been turned off. In three the police had knocked on the door numerous times, they left notes. The notes were to Gloria. Lavish Summit had reported her missing. Please call Detective Cole ... bla.bla.bla.

Sara spent more and more time at the library and the fast food restaurant. She learned how to cook, clean and sew from videos. She started treating the situation like a weird camping trip. The web helped with that. She learned skills from videos.

She waited for Gloria to return.

A neighbor saw her leaving the house one afternoon.

She bombarded her with questions. The way she looked at her made her skin crawl. Sara finally made her excuses and left.

The next morning a man and woman waited outside for her.

They were from the department of child services.

For the first time in a long time Sara and Evodin agreed. Run.
