CH. 15 Secrets
He shifted uncomfortably at the direct eye contact. "Um, I'm not sure I understand. We have years to get to know our wolves, to form bonds with them. They are part of us. How could anyone hate a part of themselves; a part that makes them who they are?"
"Steven, I think she means hypothetically." Sebastian cut in. "She's trying to understand how it works."
"No." She shook her head and planted her feet. "I mean literally." To her exasperation they both looked at her oddly.
Great, now they look at me like I'm crazy. Haven't I suffered enough of that? Her lips tightened in a harsh line. She tried to grab control of her chaotic emotional state. She closed her eyes. I'm not crazy. I'm not crazy. I'm not crazy.
"I don't know how this works. I wasn't born here or raised here. Humans think that hearing voices in your head means you're crazy. Then they treat you like you are. They try to cure you. They talk, they push, they pull, they stuff pills down your throat, they measure your brain wave, they shock you, poke you, inject you," Sara kept speaking even though she felt Evodin rebelling at the memories. Evodin wanted her to shut up. She wanted to keep their secrets private.
"They lock you up, they tie you down, they look at you with pity, then there are the one that treat you like a personal toy. They tell you that no one will believe you because your crazy, and you know they're right. You are crazy. They lock you in the dark and tell you there is no voice. But there's more voices then there should be. Because your not alone. You don't see a face. But you feel someone breathing, smell it in your face. You feel them when they touch. You feel the body on you. You know your crazy because the voice in your head tells you it will be okay. But you know it will never be okay." Her heart was pounding. She had never told anyone about this. Her hands shook.
Sebastian felt his wolf clawing at the wall between them. The wall was weakening but he was still unable to communicate with his other self. He pushed the thought away and concentrated on Sarah.
"The voice in your head promises to help you escape. But you don't escape. So, yes, you hate her for the hope, the lies, the pain. You refuse to listen to her. You don't talk to her. Then you go home. But everything has changed, nothing is alright."
Sebastian felt his wolf again clawing at the wall. He could almost hear him howling.
Sara twisted her fingers in her white hospital pants. She looked at the door. Tears burned her eyes. Her breath caught in her chest.
"I knew it wasn't Evodin's fault that things changed. But I blamed her. If she had never whispered those first words to me I never would have been locked away. I would have been with my dad. I would have nursed him back to health. But she had spoke to me. I had been - away. By the time I got home we didn't talk any more. But I could still feel her, hear her. She hated Gloria." A tear fell from her cheek and tinged on the floor.
"I know Gloria wasn't perfect. But she was nice, usually. She protected us from Lonnie. She cried when daddy died. She held me when I cried. We talked. We had fun.
"But Evodin hated it. She wouldn't even let me be happy. I had a friend, my only friend, and she hated her. I felt it. Worse - when Gloria went missing, Evodin was glad. She wasn't glad long but it was long enough." Sarah said with scorn.
The room was absolutely silent with the exceptions of the IV and heart monitor hooked to Sebastian. His heart raced and the machine beeped quickly. The IV fluids dripped steadily.
"Sara?" Steven said drawing her attention from Sebastian's IV. She turned her head slowly. Her mind was still in the past but circling the fact that her family was dead.
"Luna Barbara and Alpha Alexander will be here in a moment."
Her eyebrows pinched in confusion. She looked at him and realized the reason they were coming was because HE had shared her story through the pack link.
"You told them?! That was private. I've shared everything with Evodin since I was four years old. I didn't have a choice. I chose to tell you when I didn't have too!" She looked around the room, desperate. "I have to go." She desperately wanted to escape.
"Sara. Stop." Sebastian said calmly. "You can trust them. Your past won't be public knowledge. But the Alpha and Luna had to know."
Sara didn't listen. She moved toward the door. The door opened and Luna Barbara walked through. She didn't look smug, angry, hard, or suspicious as Sara had last remembered her. She looked like the Barbara that had greeted her at the camp grounds.
"Barbara," Sara said unsure what she felt.
"Luna Barbara or simply Luna." She gently corrected her.
Sara swallowed and took a frightened step back. A giant of a man had entered behind the Luna. He towered over everyone. He wore casual clothes, gray T-shirt, black jeans, and gray sneakers but he radiated power. Sara could feel it in her cells.
"This is Alpha Alexander. My mate and husband." Luna casually placed a hand on the man's arm. Her body leaned closer to his, his leaned toward her. Her fingers caressed his forearm. She was looking up at him with adoration.
His eyes were on Sara.
"You must be Sara." The man's voice was just as strong as he looked. Sara trembled in fear.
Luna Barbara tightened her grip and then relaxed it when his eyes found hers. The change in him was instant. His eyes shifted to a softer gaze. The corner of his mouth lifted in what was almost a smile. Luna stroked his arm and the smile became real.
Despite their apparent absorption in each other Sara wasn't fooled, she was sure they were very aware of everyone in the room.
Alpha Alexander leaned down and placed a small kiss on Luna's forehead.
In unison they turned to Sara.
