CH. 13 Infirmary

Before she could reach him he shook his head. He hated to kill the hope he saw in her eyes but she needed the truth.

"No, Sara. You're step-mother didn't send me. The lawyer that worked for your adopted father did."

Sara shook her head again. "No, I wasn't adopted."

Sebastian cleared his throat. "I should have all the documents in my car, Sara. I don't know where my car is but it can be found. I'll show you… all of it."

"Your car's at the camp ground where we found her." Gabriel said, reminding Sara they were not alone.

For a moment everyone remained silent. Sara bit her lip. "Did - has anyone found Gloria? I haven't checked my messages in three weeks." Everyone waited for Sebastian.

Everyone, except Sara, noticed his poster immediately stiffen even as he sat on the bed. She just looked at him, hopeful. The silence dragged on to long. Sara shifted her weight from one foot to the other, eyes saddened. "Sebastian? Tell me." She wanted to demand he tell her that Gloria was found and that she was okay. But she noticed his silence. He would have been happy to tell her good news, he wouldn't have hesitated.

"I'm sorry, Sara. Her body was found three years ago. A Lonnie Francis admitted killing her." He looked down and didn't see Sara' flinch at the name. "He claimed that she ruined him through her, um, job." He didn't look up and none of the others spoke.

"Lavish Summits." She nodded. "She banned him from using them again."

He looked up, shocked that she knew Gloria worked for Lavish Summit. "Not just them. She got him banned from all the high dollar escort agency's. He pled guilty so all the details didn't become public knowledge."

"Where was she found?" She asked her voice shaking. Evodin whined in her head. Sara felt small waves of guilt and and sorrow from her.

He killed her because she banned him to protect us. She whimpered. She was only protecting us. Evodin kept whispering on in her head. She felt guilty because she hadn't liked Gloria. She hadn't wanted Gloria in their family. She was talking mothers place. I didn't want her to. But father married her. Now she's dead. Because of us. I never gave her a chance.

Sara lifted her hand to her head. Tears blurred and stung her eyes. Her knees felt weak. Her head hurt. She whimpered.  Her emotions and Evodin's blended. The emotions and pain in her head was crushing them.

She could hear someone speaking but the meaning behind the words refused to form. Her eyes were tightly closed, trapping unshed tears behind the lids.

We really are alone now. Sara, we're alone. Sorrow bled from Evodin into Sara.

Sara tried to shut Evodin out as she had done many times before. Evodin's emotions were so deep Sara couldn't push them away. It felt like every emotion Evodin had experienced was flooding her brain. Sara whimpered with the force of it all.

"Shut up, you - you have to shut up. Evodin, shut up." The plea slipped past her lips. Her body felt like it was growing heavier. She tightened her fist but wanted to sink to her knees. She tried to force a mental wall between her and Evodin. The emotional tsunami slammed the wall into her. She opened her mouth and screamed.

It was too much to endure but it was also a blessing. A flash of light blinded her then she was surrounded by darkness. For a while she felt nothing. She didn't even feel the her own emotions about Gloria's death.

Sara woke up slowly. She could feel soft fabric sheets around her and a soft mattress under her body. The scent of mountain rain drifted around her. She snuggled into the thick pillow. A soft moan escaped her lips. This was a wonderful dream. She felt a cool spot as she slid her hand under the pillow. She moaned. There was a soft almost silent beep in the room.

"Ms. Allen?" Came a hesitant voice from behind her. Her eyes popped open, she jumped out of the bed. She twisted her body to face the voice. Her arm stung.

Wires hung, gently swinging by the bedside. It took her a moment to realize that seconds ago they had been attached to her. She examined her body and found nothing still attached.

A woman stood on the other side of the bed. She was dressed in white. Her black hair tied in a pony tail hung behind her. She wore metal frame glasses that had a yellow gold tint over the lenses.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. I'm Liza." The woman pulled a pink cell phone from her pocket.

"Where am I?" Sara demanded. She tried to study the room and keep the woman in sight at the same time. Fear ratcheted in her gut. Fear of being locked up.

"Lake Thorn Pack. Steven told me to have you call him. He's at the apartments visiting with the Alpha and Luna." The woman held out the cell phone.

"Why am I here?" Sara eyed the woman and the phone.

"If you'll call Steven, he'll explain everything." The woman shook the phone. "It's the last number in the call list."

Sara reached over the bed and took the phone. It only took a moment to set the call in motion. He answered on the fourth ring.

"Steven Patton." He informed her in a light tone.

"Why am I here?" Sara demanded, anger.

"Sara - you pasted out - screaming - in the cabin. We brought you to the pack house infirmary to evaluate you and make sure that you where okay."

"How long have I been here?" She asked gripping the phone tightly.

"Nine hours at the pack infirmary. But it took us almost four hours to get you and Sebastian off the mountain then to the pack infirmary."

"Where's Sebastian?" She asked her anger dimmer then it had been.

"The room next to you."

Sara pulled the phone from her ear and looked at the display. 7:23 PM. She pressed the phone back to her ear. She walked around the bed. The woman watched without a word as she made her way out of the room.

"Left or right?" She asked at the door.

"Right." He said. "Sara, I'm sorry. I know you have questions but I have to go. I have a meeting with the Alpha and Luna."

Sara wasn't sure what he meant but she had reached Sebastian's door. She hung up the phone.

"I'll take it." Liza said behind her. Sara passed her the phone and faced Sebastian's closed door.

She wasn't sure why she felt so nervous. Even her heart had speed up.
