CH. 11 A Talk Or Two
She felt some of the others following her inside. She dropped down to her knees beside Sebastian. The others moved cautiously into the unknown territory. Light landed on Sebastian and Steven gently pushed her aside.
She scrambled back on her butt trying to be out of the way. Barbara crouched down by her.
"Sara?"
Sara looked up. Her heart was racing and her throat felt clogged up with fear. Tears burned her eyes.
"I know you're having a rough time. But I need you to tell me where the hunters are." Barbara said. Gabriel towered over her as he stood only inches behind her.
"Can you draw a map? Something with landmarks we could see in the dark?" Gabriel asked.
It took a few minutes to get an area set up on the counter with light. Sara drew a messy map but hoped it would be enough to help them.
She watched as they discussed the map. She watched as Steven worked on Sebastian. Watching Steven was harder then she expected it would be. Even Evodin was nervous. She hasn't spoken but Sara felt her pacing in her head.
She turned around and went outside. It didn't help. There were people all around her sanctuary. Three and four wheelers now parked around it as well. Someone had set up a few lanterns that cast dim glows over the space. She could smell the people milling around her space. She sighed.
She moved into the trees away from the others. She could still see the study glow of the lanterns between the trees. She sat down and leaned against the tree.
She didn't like the intrusion but she knew she would make the same choice. They would leave. She would have her privacy back. Hopefully, Sebastian would be alive.
She frowned. The thought of Sebastian leaving was unpleasant.
I thought you wanted your privacy. Evodin spoke in her head.
Really? Now you speak to me? And, yes, I want my privacy! Sara snapped at her.
But you don't want him to leave. Evodin teased.
Of course I do. Sara denied.
Liar. Evodin laughed.
Why didn't you talk to me earlier? Sara asked.
At first the was no reply. Sara wondered if she would.
Two reasons. They scare me and you don't like me talking to you when people are around. She finally said.
It's distracting. She said then added, They scare you? To her knowledge Evodin had never been scared. Angry, sad, amused, happy, yes, but she couldn't remember a time when Evodin had been afraid. Not even when locked up had she been scared.
When they're around its almost like I can hear voices in my head. Evodin said.
"See, it sucks to hear voices of people that aren't there. Doesn't it?" Sara said out loud with a laugh.
Before Evodin could respond Barbra spoke from her left.
"Steven wants to look at your hand. We're leaving in five to search for the hunters."
Sara saw her silhouetted in the light between the trees. She stood up and followed Barbra back to the hide.
As soon as she entered she looked at Sebastian. He still slept soundly on the bed. Steven motioned for her to come to him.
He quickly removed the bandages.
"I'll give you a local anesthetic. You won't feel the incision. You'll need to have the stitches removed in fourteen days." He told her and he pulled blue cloths out of plastic wraps and place them on the counter. He position her hand over the blue cloth then placed another blue cloth over the top of it. This one had a hole in center.
He cleaned the area with what looked like a giant q-tip that was covered in a a reddish brown liquid.
"Let's give that a moment to dry. The needle stings unless it's dry." He filled a needle with a clear anesthetic and recapped it. He placed a pair of tweezers and a scalpel by the needle. "Keep it clean and dry for twenty four hours." He spoke as he pulled a suture needle from its package. "Keep an eye out for redness or swelling."
He sat the suture needle on the blue cloth and picked up the other. He uncapped it and gave her a reassuring smile. It was he inserted the needle and injected it in three different spots. Then they gave it a moment to completely numb.
Sara felt lightheaded and looked away. A few moments later he held up the tweezers showing her the quarter inch stick.
Sara swallowed. Just then Sebastian groaned. Her attention shifted.
"Sebastian?" She said.
"I feel like I was hit by a truck." He said then he groaned. "Big truck."
"Hold on. I'll be there in a minute." She told him.
A few minutes later Steven pronounced that he was done. She started to go to Sebastian but Steven wouldn't let her. Sebastian watched from the bed.
"Wait, Sara. I still have to wrap it."
Sara felt anxious to go to Sebastian. Steven noticed. He told her it would be quick. It only took about two minutes.
She sat by Sebastian and smiled down at him. "You scared me. I thought you were going to die."
"No yet." He quipped. His grin spread over his face.
"Not funny." She told him. She didn't even notice Steven leaving.
"So. You went for help." He asked. She nodded. "What happen there?" He indicated her hand. His voice sounded drowsy.
"I fell when I was running." She shrugged. She felt different. Yesterday when she entered the hide she had wanted to demand answers.
She had been mad at him for bringing this to her home. Those men. Guns. Blood. Fear. She knew what she saw but was having trouble getting it to make any sense. She looked over her shoulder. Steven had left.
"I saw a man turn into a wolf last night." She blurted out. His breath sucked past his lips. She spilled the whole story. She didn't leave anything out. She even told him that there was a chance she was crazy. She finished it with, "I just thought you should know."
