CH. 10 Pick Up

"Yes. But you should hurry." Sara told them where she was. She tried to explain where Sebastian was. She explained that the trek was a long one. The woman reassured her they had ATVs that would eat up the miles quickly.

"What's your name sweetie?" Barbra asked.

Sara hesitated before answering. "Sara." She said in a small voice.

"We'll be there to help you soon, Sara."

"I have to let my phone charger, and use the facilities."

As soon as she disconnected the call she looked down at her hand. A part of the stick stuck out of the skin. She tried to grip it but the pain made her grit her teeth and let go.

Get it out, Sara. Evodin demanded.

She took a few fast deep breaths and grabbed the end of the stick. She pulled. She heard something snap but the stick pulled free. Blood flowed. She dropped the stick. Her hand burned. She took care of her personal business. It was wonderful to be in a real bathroom with running water for a change.

She used her water bottle to wash the vomit off the sidewalk and into the grass. Then pressing her hand to her chest she sat and waited. The wall behind her back warmed her through her sweat dampened shirt. Her backpack sat between her knees a strap wrapped around her wrist.

The adrenaline that had kept her going earlier was long gone. She felt the pain in her abused muscles and hand more keenly then before. She also felt the fatigue settling around her. She closed her eyes and breathed evenly. Please hurry, she begged silently. Please.

An hour later Sara jerked awake. A large man stood in front of her. He wore woodcraft boots and dressed in old jungle fatigues. Her breathing doubled in fear.

"Steven, you'll give the girl a heart attack."

Sara jerked her head to look past him to find the owner of the familiar voice. He was already moving away. She could have sworn she heard him mumble, "Smell her."

"Sara?" The woman asked. Her warm smile calming Sara's fear.

"Barbara!" Sara exclaimed jumping up. "We have to hurry."

Barbara moved forward. "They're unloading the wheelers now." She patted Sara's shoulder. "For now you should let Steven look at your hand." She said. She glanced down at Sara's hand. Fresh blood dripped from her palm.

Sara just nodded. Knowing Steven was here to help Sebastian, being fully awake and hearing Barbra's admiration for the man, Sara found him less terrifying.

He moved forward and she held out her hand. "I got the stick out." She told him but didn't mention how much it still hurt.

His touch was gentle and allowed Sara to look at the activity in the parking lot.

Three black crew cab Ford trucks sat in the parking lot. The light from the security lamps gleemed on the black paint. Each was hooked up to a hauling trailer painted the same shiny black. Three four wheelers had already been unloaded.

"There is a piece of wood still under the skin. I'll have to Lance it." Steven said pulling her attention from the parking lot. "It's best not to do that here. But I can give you a pain killer."

It took her a moment to reply. "Oh, Okay." She said.

"Um... There's something I didn't tell you." She admitted. She felt Stevens fingers tighten slightly on her wrist.

"What is it, Sara." Barbara asked. She looked at her intently.

"I saw men. They were crazy. I think they shot him, Sebastian, I mean. But the way they talked, it was like, they thought they had shot a wolf, not a man." She didn't add that one of the men had changed in to a wolf. She didn't want them to think she was crazy.

Crazy, she thought. It was then that she realized that Evodin had been completely silent since she jolted awake. For a second she though about calling out to her. She didn't.

"Hunters." Barbara said to a man Sara hadn't noticed standing a few feet in front of the men's restroom. "Tell me." Barbara said. Sara told them everything about the conversation she could remember.

"Wolf born? There are wolves on the mountain?" The man asked.

"They don't usually come on my side."

"They were sure they shot a wolf but not sure if it was a wolf born." He asked. He stepped closer. Sara nodded. His eyes searched her and his nostrils flared. "Interesting."

"But they didn't. They shot Sebastian." Sara clarified. He still studied her like a bug pinned to a board.

"Gabriel, I need to bandage her hand." Steven told him almost apologetically. Gabriel nodded. Steven turned to Sara. "Follow me."

Sara followed him to one of the trucks. He pulled out a black thick canvas duffle bag. The bag was half her size but he had no trouble lifting it. He bandaged her hand and gave her a shot in her hip.

She had had to unbutton her jeans standing in the middle of the parking lot. She looked up when someone called to Brenda that they were ready to head out. She straightened her pants.

Sara and Barbra shared a four wheeler. The lights on the front of the vehicle lit the path as Sara directed them in the right direction.

Sara found it hard to hold on to the bars meant to be used to tie down belongings. Despite the pain meds her hand hurt when she gripped a bar.

She didn't dare ask Barbra to go slower. She knew they were pressed for time. Barbara was keeping her promise. The ATVs were eating up the distance between them and Sebastian. Six ATVs followed behind them. Steven sat on the one right behind Sara and Barbra. Gabriel followed behind the others.

Sara tapped Barbra on the shoulder. "The ground it uneven on the other side of this patch of oak. There are a few places were the ground washed out in a flood."

"Let me know when we're past the danger." Barbra called out over the engine.

As if on cure the whole convoy slowed down. It only took three minutes to leave the area behind and they were traveling through the darkness quickly once more.

Sara's heart speed up when they reached the hide. "Stop!" She yelled.

She was off the Wheeler running to the covered entrance. She grabbed the covering and flung it aside.

The lights from the wheelers vanished and was replaced by flashlights.

Sara reached in the dark space and pulled the camp light out. She flipped it on and ducked in to the Hide.
