Put To The Test

The sun shone through the trees, waking many Pokémon from their slumber. Jason woke up groggily, stretching and yawning as always. He blinked, realizing that something was missing. He looked over to see that Hiromi was still asleep and so was Lux. But his Shinx was gone! He got up quickly and looked around the immediate area, looking for anysigns of where the thunder cub might have gone.

It wasn't until he heard a familiar tail thwacking that he knew where Shinx had gone. Following the sound, Jason was led to the very same spot that Lux had trained him the day before. Jason spotted Shinx practicing the move, still determined to get it right. Shinx braced himself and concentrated.

Come on, you can do this. What was it she was trying to tell me again? He thought as his tail crackled with electricity. Oh yeah! Don't reach for my electricity. But...how can I not? How an I supposed to reach for something that isn't there?

Shinx sighed as he stared at the rock. He had to get this right. But how? It was frustrating. How could he use something that wasn't even a part of him? Then it hit him.

Lux also knows that it's not natural for her to use a move that isn't of her element. Yet she makes it look like it's the most natural thing in the world. Maybe...maybe I am going about this the wrong way, Shinx thought as he deepened his concentration.

Maybe I am trying too hard, thinking too much. Maybe I should focus less on reaching for what's already there, and reach for what isn't there yet. Shinx stared at the rock with a determined expression on his face.

His tail started to feel a bit heavier. It was a new feeling, but he focused on it. Jason continued to watch, not wanting to interrupt. Shinx's tail began to flash that same metallic shimmer that Lux had previously. Holding fast to this new feeling, Shinx swung hard, the tail coating itself completely in metal by this time before it smashed into the rock. Chunks of the rock flew everywhere and dust kicked up.

When it cleared, the rock still stood, but there was a sizable groove cut into the rock at an arc. Shinx had just learned Iron Tail. It wasn't nearly as strong as Lux's, but that was to be expected. Shinx smiled tiredly at his handiwork.

"Looks like he finally got it," came a voice behind Jason.

"And just how long have you been standing there?" Jason asked, sweat-dropping.

"Long enough. Looks like he got up earlier than we did," Hiromi sniggered.

"Looks like it," Jason replied, watching as Lux walked up to Shinx.

X-X-X

"I suppose that's the best I can do for now," Shinx said aloud.

"I don't know, I thought it was pretty good for your first time using it," Lux remarked, causing Shinx to smile.

"So you and the others saw, huh?" Shinx laughed.

"Yes. That's a pretty nice gash you made there. Not bad for starters. The more you use the move, the stronger your tail will become, which in turn will strengthen the power of the move," Lux explained.

"I think I get it, thanks Lux," Shinx beamed.

"You are very welcome," Lux replied, nuzzling his cheek before walking back to Hiromi.

X-X-X

"Now that he knows Iron Tail," Hiromi began, "we need to put it to the test in battle. This will determine how ready he will be for the gym battle," Hiromi grinned.

"Sounds good to me," Jason replied with a faint smile.

"Good! Let's go find you an opponent!" Hiromi exclaimed.

Jason nodded and then turned to Shinx, kneeling down to pet the thunder cub.

"Great job Shinx. I'm proud of you, now get some rest," Jason stated, returning Shinx in a flash of red.

X-X-X

The duo made good headway on the route, watching several battles taking place along the way. Hiromi was busy feeling out a good opponent for Jason, focusing on how well the opposition had been trained. She was about to speak when she sensed someone approach.

"Yo! You two are trainers right?" A male voice called to them.

Jason stopped and turned to face a young man around his age. He had short, black hair and bright green eyes. He wore a white longsleeve shirt and black jeans with red and black sneakers.

"Yeah, we are," Jason replied.

"Awesome! Then I challenge you to a battle!" The young man declared.

Jason smirked and stepped forward. He took note of the fact that he only had one Pokémon at the moment. This was good and it would give Shinx some practice. Hiromi walked between the two and smiled.

"I'll be the judge," she said simply, placing a hand on her hip as she waited for the two to begin.

"Before we start, the name's Allen, what's yours?" Allen inquired.

"Jason. It's nice to meet you Allen."

"Likewise, shall we get started?" Allen inquired.

"Yes, let's," Jason added.

"Alright then, Bonsly, let's go!" Allen called out.

A small, round Pokémon appeared on the field. It had the shape of a bonsai tree with the top of its head being in the form of a club.

A Rock-type right off the bat? This is great! Hiromi thought.

Jason couldn't have asked for a better opportunity. Without hesitation he reached for Shinx's ball.

"Shinx, you're on!" Jason bellowed.

The thunder cub exploded onto the field, lowering himself into a battle stance. His electric yellow hues stared unblinking at the Bonsly.

An Electric-type huh? Odd choice, but whatever, Allen thought as he prepared a strategy.

"Ready you two?" Hiromi inquired.

"Ready!" Both sides said simultaneously.

"Begin!" Hiromi shouted.

"Bonsly, use Rock Throw!" Allen commanded.

Bonsly stomped hard on the ground and caused a decent sized rock to materialize before him. With the use of the club atop his head, he flung the rock towards Shinx. No fool, the cub lept to the side to avoid it.

Okay, Bonsly is a Rock-type which means Shinx's Spark won't be very effective against it. Guess that only leaves one option. Wear it down and use Iron Tail, Jason deduced.

"Rollout!" Allen called out.

Well this complicates things, Jason grimaced.

Bonsly began to rapidly spin on his side and then raced off towards Shinx. The little lion lept high and away to avoid it. Bonsly, however, was not done. He came barreling around for another attack. Shinx jinked to the right and snarled at Bonsly.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. I wonder how Jason will handle this, thought Hiromi as she listened to the battle.

"Shinx, keep moving! Don't let him get you!" Jason shouted.

This is going to be difficult. Rollout gets stronger and faster the more it's used. And it looks like this Bonsly practiced a lot. Jason speculated, watching as Shinx barely dodged the last attack.

Shinx lept up only to be clipped at his back right paw and sent sprawling. The thunder cub struggled to his feet, nursing an injury.

That's not good! Now Shinx can't do anything. Jason dismayed.

"Keep it up Bonsly, run it down!" Allen commanded.

Bonsly didn't hesitate to obey. He rolled forward at a quickened pace and rammed hard into Shinx, sending him flying and skidding along the ground.

"Give up yet?" Allen quizzed.

Jason looked at Shinx as he pushed himself up. He was able to stand and by the looks of things was in no way going to back out. Shinx looked back at Jason and then Hiromi. Seeing his determination, Jason couldn't quit. An idea soon came upon him which, in his mind, could prove to be risky.

"Nope, we're still in it. Shinx doesn't want to give in and honestly neither do I," Jason replied.

"Alright, your choice then. Bonsly, Rollout!"

"Wait for it Shinx!" Jason commanded.

Shinx didn't question the command. He braced himself, and waited for Bonsly. His tail soon began to give off a metallic shine, and soon his tail became like a flexible piece of unbreakable steel. Bonsly rolled in and Shinx was ready.

"Iron Tail!" Jason hollared.

Shinx swung hard, his tail knifing through the air as swift as the wind itself. It crashed into Bonsly and sent him rocketing away. The momentum of Bonsly's own attack had been used against him, which resulted in him crashing into a tree and landing out cold.

Hiromi sent her hand up the moment she heard the impact. She sensed that Bonsly was down for the count.

"Bonsly is unable to battle! Shinx wins which means Jason wins the match!" Hiromi declared.

Allen returned Bonsly and chuckled. "Looks like we underestimated you. That was a lot of fun."

"It was a great match. I thought you had us for a minute there," Jason replied, giving Shinx a pat on the head.

"Yeah, I thought so too. Anyway, I had better get moving. I have to get home or my mother will have a Miltank," Allen laughed.

"Where's home?" Hiromi inquired curiously.

"Oreburgh. I went to visit a friend in Jubilife. I told my mom that I would be home later today. She worries a lot," Allen chuckled.

"So you aren't on a journey?" Jason asked, surprised.

"Not yet. But hopefully soon," Allen laughed.

"Well, I hope you get the chance. It's quite an experience," Jason stated with a grin.

"So I see. Well, take care you two. I need to get going Thanks for the battle!" Allen said as he jogged off.

Jason waved him off and turned to Shinx. He bent down to give him a few congratulatory scratches before returning him.

"You two did very well out there. You sure have a knack for this," Hiromi said with a grin.

"I try," Jason chuckled.

"Well, you did great! Now, shall we have Shinx work on Ice Fang next!?" Hiromi asked ecstatically.

"Hold your Rapidashes Hiromi. Shinx needs to heal first," Jason replied.

"I know that. I am talking about after he rests," Hiromi giggled.

"Of course. We can start once he recovers. In the meantime, let's cover more ground before sunset," Jason proposed.

"I think that's a grand idea," Hiromi declared, taking hold of Jason's hand.

Once again, that warmth spread through him, making him wonder as to the exact cause of it. The two continued on, hoping to reach Oreburgh before nightfall.
