Character Arc: In the year 2012, Sarab discovers that she has the X-Gene when her powers are awoken after she watches a spaceship launch at Stark Industries. Her father is an engineer for Stark Industries and he worked on the spaceship, so she and her family have perks. They are given a special tour behind the scenes afterwards. In the laboratory, she touches an ancient enchanted Nabatean coin from Petra, Jordan, unearthed by her father during an expedition. This coin triggers her X-Gene, which gives her the abilities of spatial manipulation, illusion manipulation, and stellar manipulation. She feels that something inside her has changed, but she ignores it and thinks that she is just tired.
She discovers her powers a few days later when she is being bullied and her powers are triggered to create a wall of stars that protect her from her attackers. Her powers disorient the bullies and they are unable to identify her, allowing her to escape and keep her mutant abilities a secret. No one had seen who did it and people are still looking for the suspect, so she lives in constant fear. Not even her own family knows about her powers because she refuses to put them in danger by telling them.
Shortly after she gets her powers, her father, Omar Zaman, rescues an alien named Bo-Kloff from a terrorist organization called The Ten Rings. Omar takes Bo-Kloff to visit his daughter and then returns safely to his family. Sarab spends years hiding in plain sight. She discovers that she has a special gene called the X-Gene, which makes her a mutant, and becomes a local superhero in disguise named Almajarra. In the year 2017, Thanos invades Earth and members of his army attack Sarab and her family. They are all saved by a woman named Zoth K’lar, also known as Zelda Coulson, who is Bo-Kloff’s daughter. The Zaman family knows that they aren’t safe in their house and that they need extra protection, so Zoth contacts Steve Rogers and asks him if she and the Zaman family can hide out in the Avengers Compound temporarily. Steve agrees and says that they are housing some of the other Avengers there, too. Zoth and Sarab grows close, and Zoth becomes Sarab’s favorite Avenger. Ever since that day, Sarab has had posters of Zoth up on her bedroom walls. Zoth also inspires Sarab to become a teacher.
In the year 2023, Sarab and her family attend Tony Stark’s funeral after he sacrifices himself to save the world from Thanos.
In the year 2025, during Sarab's sophomore year of high school when she is seventeen years old, her younger brother, Haydar, discovers that she has powers and confronts her privately. She does not want him to get involved for fear of endangering him, but he insists that she does not have to go it alone and becomes her partner. He uses his musical skills to compose a superhero theme for her and utilizes his computer skills to help her develop ways to control her powers and defend herself. A few months later, she and her family travel to Karachi, Pakistan, where they are to attend the wedding of Sarab’s second cousin, who is Jordanian but is getting married in Pakistan. After the wedding, Sarab and Haydar wander off to the marketplace, but they are ambushed by burglars. Sarab starts to use her powers as a reflex, but she isn’t masked, so Haydar stops her. They are saved by two members of an organization called The Order of the Red Daggers. Both members are around Sarab’s age. One of the members, however, seems to be the only Red Dagger with powers. The other members use knives, blades, and daggers to fight.
Haydar is in awe of the Red Daggers and wants to join them, but the two Red Daggers do not unmask themselves. Instead, the boy with powers regroups with the other members, while the boy with the red mask who has no powers escorts Sarab and Haydar back to the wedding venue. He bids them good night before leaving. Sarab makes it her mission to find out the identity of the boys under the masks, while Haydar becomes determined to become like the Red Daggers. Without telling Sarab why, he asks her to train him in Tae Kwon Do. They used to take Tae Kwon Do together, but he hasn’t reached black belt yet, so Sarab is more equipped to train him. She agrees to teach him, thinking that he will use it to defend himself against bullies and bad people. He practices that moves that she teaches him and studies parkour videos online to learn how to fight similarly to the Red Daggers. He is eager to learn how to use knives, but he decides to save that for when he is older.
That summer, at their local mosque, Sarab’s family introduces her to a young man named Kareem, who is visiting America from Pakistan to tour colleges and get foreign language credits. He informs them that he has just come there from New Jersey and is still debating with college to attend. Sarab and Kareem befriend each other and form a connection through Haydar, who looks up to Kareem. Sarab often tags along with Haydar and Kareem when they spend time together so that she can watch over her brother. As a result, Sarab and Kareem form a close bond.
In the same month, Sarab and Kareem meet as Almajarra and Red Dagger in the city. They begin partnering up for missions, unaware of each other's true identities. Haydar discovers Kareem's true identity before Sarab does and Haydar asks Kareem to train him to be a Red Dagger so that he can defend himself. Kareem is apprehensive, but when Haydar begins finding himself in dangerous situations, Kareem eventually agrees and makes a red bandanna for Haydar. However, Haydar convinces Kareem not to tell Sarab or their family because he does not want them to worry. Haydar keeps Sarab's identity a secret.
Sarab and Haydar do a deep dive to find out where Sarab got her X-Gene from. They discover that their distant aunt on their mother’s side worked closely with mutant genetics, so they video chat with her to find out where Sarab could have gotten her powers from. Sarab and Haydar’s great uncle was a mutant with the ability to create illusions, so that is where Sarab got her powers from. When Sarab and Haydar ask their aunt why she never said anything about it, she simply replies, “You never asked.”
Sarab begins to suspect that Kareem and Haydar are up to something. She confronts Kareem when Haydar goes missing and discovers that Haydar has gone on a solo mission to stop a robbery, wearing his red bandanna. Sarab blames Kareem for what happened to Haydar, leading to an argument which ends in them revealing their superhero identities to each other. Kareem feels guilty and tries to apologize, but Sarab chews him out. Omar and his wife, Rosalie, are frantically searching for Haydar. Sarab tells them that she knows where he is, but he returns home before they go out to search for him, informing them that he wants to be a Red Dagger and that he successfully aided the police in stopping an unarmed robbery.
A few days later, Sarab decides to tell her parents about her powers. She discovers that her father suspected it, but neither of her parents actually knew. Omar and Rosalie say that they are proud of both their children and they feel horrible guilt for not realizing what Sarab went through all those years. Rather than making Sarab and Haydar stop being heroes, Omar and Rosalie ask them if they can be their sidekicks and help them on missions to make things less dangerous. Sarab and Haydar agree. On Friday, Sarab runs into Kareem at the mosque before he leaves for Karachi. He apologizes for keeping her in the dark and she apologizes for blowing up at him. They part amicably. Afterwards, Sarab admits to her mother that she has a crush on him. A few days later, Sarab sees Haydar’s schedule for his first day of middle school next month. She is elated to find out that his Social Studies teacher is none other than Zelda Coulson.
Personality and Character Analysis: Sarab Zaman is a creative, loyal, and emotional individual. Despite sometimes wearing her heart on her sleeve, she is often stoic and difficult to read, which she occasionally uses to her advantage, especially during a physical fight. Though she has been trained to have control over her body and mind, her emotions tend to get the best of her. This typically leads to her being taken advantage of, allowing herself to be dragged into situations that she is not meant to be involved in, leaving herself vulnerable in dire situations, or the escalation of conflict on her part.
Her strong use of words and occasional sass are helpful sometimes, but most of the time they get her into trouble. She has a tendency to be gullible due to her intense emotions and sometimes sheltered life, but she is getting better at protecting herself and learning how to read people better. She is very protective of people whom she cares about and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Though she can sometimes be closed off, she is usually open to new relationships, wants to help people, and has a generally happy demeanor. Her core personality traits are her determination, her loyalty to her loved ones, and her creativity. Though Sarab is still learning how to balance her mind and emotions, she is very intelligent and well-read.
Her quick-thinking and keen senses serve as helpful traits in many situations. Though she is overly emotional, stubborn, and often indecisive, she is also clever, learns from her mistakes, and has strong leadership skills. She is a loyal friend with a gift for words and prose. She is also a dreamer and can sometimes find herself too caught up in fiction while letting her real life get out of hand. However, she has learned how to use her voice and her talent for prose to make her voice heard and help others.
Her powers sometimes make it difficult for her to control herself, but she is getting much better at dealing with that and has a well-balanced life. Sarab is slightly unstable after what she has been through and has trust issues after being deceived many times, but her heart and faith in humanity are still strong. She goes by and is widely known as Almajarra.
