They often ended up like this. Wether it was after an exhausting day at work, after making love or just like that: Light laying on top of L with his head resting on the other one's chest, arms protectively wrapped around each other. And it was just like this tonight. A dark night with a sky full of stars, air still smelling like rain, such a quiet and peaceful illusion that blinded out a world that was on fire. Flames so high and mighty, burning away everything in their path not leaving anything or anyone spared, flames that would destroy everything you loved and cherished, flames that couldn't reach those two souls sheltered in each other's arms. "Hey, Light?",the older asked quietly while stroking his hand through his lover's hair. A muffled "Hm?" endorsed him to continue talking. "Why do you always lay your head on my chest when you sleep? Not that I would mind, I'm just curious",he added quickly after he noticed Light shifting slightly. The teen sighed softly and the chain slightly rattled as he began tracing various random shapes onto the pale chest with his finger- including hearts and infinity symbols, though he would never actually admit it. "Well... I like feeling your heart beat under my ear. It's a reminder, I guess. That none of this- you, me, us- is a dream. That you really are here, beside me, when I wake up",he paused for a moment and looked up into those dark eyes that he adored so much, "And that makes me feel like the luckiest man alive" There was silence once again, just the two of them staring into each other's eyes, still astonished by the fact that in this wide and bizarre world they had found each other. And although they would never say it out loud, or even confessing it to themselves, they both knew that this wasn't just coincidence- this was fate. A fate that none of them knew the full extent of. Or rather blinded it out away for times like this, threw it into the flames that could not reach them for times like this, rewrote their fate for times like this. For times like this when they were simply two loving souls, nothing more. "Your heart is beating faster",Light whispered with a small smirk on his lips, and he could've sworn that he saw a slight blush on L's cheeks as he took his hand and placed it on his own chest, "Hey... do you feel that? You're not the only one, L..." And more words weren't needed that night. L kissed Light's forehead and wrapped his arms around the man who would give him a heart attack someday if it continued like this and held him closer than ever. He didn't want them to part, didn't want things to go the way they would, didn't want to leave his Light, not in times like this.
