Chapter 1 - I need your help
"Target has entered the cafe now Captain. I'll keep a close watch."
The woman walked into the famous cafe in Birmingham, O'Hara Coffee. She scanned the place for a while, till a bald head came to her attention. She walked to the secluded table on the far end and took a seat opposite an aged man and greeted him with a formal smile, "Afternoon Mr Brown."
"Afternoon to you too, Miss Lawrence," Mr Brown greeted back extending his hand to her, which she shook in turn.
"I've read your file, and it makes sense not to visit him after he became a vegetable." The young lady pushed her ash blonde locks out of her face and settled comfortably on the chair. Her tone remained like every other day she went out to meet with clients, cold and unfazed.
"However, I will need you to visit Liam Brown. Five times at the very least - with three days in between each visit."
"It crucial that you act overly friend with the old lady next door, make up scenarios of when you last saw her, create general conversations, leave gifts for her granddaughter from Amorie's June limited edition clothing line - do everything you can to make her think she has known you for ages. Moreover, Mari - the new nurse. It's been a little over 2 weeks since she's taken over for the previous nurse, so she won't be able to testify against your lack of visitation from before. So make sure to introduce yourself and ask questions about Liam's conditions - it will benefit you to look over these documents and get familiar with them." Verena explained, sliding an envelope towards the man.
"Hold on Miss Lawrence. Why should I do that? I have no reason to do this sort of nonsense. get comfortable with these lowlifes? No way." The old bald man frowned, crossing his hand over his chest he leaned back on the wooden chair.
Verena observed his arrogant response and her eyes somewhat darkening. She placed a hand under her chin, leaning ever so slightly forward. Her silence caught the old man off guard and he slowly adjusted his posture.
Thoroughly enjoying watching the old man grow unintentional cautious of her action, a simple lopsided smile appeared on Verena's face.
"Mr Brown." She started, her expression alone was enough to show that she meant business and the old man involuntarily shivered under her gaze. "These are things you need to do if you want the jury to be convinced. Otherwise, they will know that you attempted to murder your grandson."
The old man scrunched his brows together, a nervous sweat, and a cold chill went up against his spine. Everything was done in silence, nobody knew, how on earth did the secret got exposed? "How - how did you know?"
"You can't lie in front of a lawyer Mr brown, the truth always comes out to us. Anyway, after you've done what I asked you to do inform me and we'll set another day to meet. Now, if you'll excuse me I have other things to do." So speaking she stood up, and extended her hand, forcing the old man to nervously follow her lead.
"Boss she's entering her car now. I'll follow her," the young man mumbled into the Bluetooth.
Folding the newspaper that he had been pretending to read the whole time, he quickly followed Verena to the street opposite the cafe. Yet somehow, in a few moments, it took him to get there, his target had gone missing.
"Sir, Miss Lawrence has gone missing!" He exclaimed, rushing to where he expected her to be. "I saw her walking here, but..."
The person from the other side let out a long-troubled sigh, "Is her car still there Kyle?"
"Her car is still her Sir,' Kyle replied, frantically looking around for her. "I can't find her. What would I do?"
"Telling me why you've been tailing me the whole day would be a good start."
Kyle froze in place: it took every inch of him to turn around and come face to face with an annoyed Verena, glaring at him. "Well, kid?"
"I was- I didn't want -the thing is - I kinda had to - and I won't do it- " Kyle didn't plan on getting exposed so quickly, so he could only stutter, trying to find the right words to say. Finally catching a grip of himself, he pulled out his most serious face, "I have no idea what you're talking about. Goodbye Miss Lawrence."
Kyle paced away from her when the bothered voice yelled at him through the Bluetooth, "Kyle!? Go back and bring her to see us, that was your first mission you hopeless Asian child."
"Hey! That's racist, but yes, you're right!" Being instantly reminded of his duty, Kyle marched up to Verena, making his voice as deep as he could, he explained himself. "Miss Lawrence I need you to follow me to the ICC headquarters. There someone waiting to meet you."
Verena stared at him, watching his doe eyes slowly lose hope and his perfect brow connected with worry. After quickly contemplating whether to ignore the kid and leaving or hearing him out, Verena spun around walking away from him.
"Wait, are you-" Kyle quickly followed after her to her car.
She pulled out her keys and slipped into her car. "Lead the way. I'll follow."
Kyle smile from ear to ear while he ran to his car and started to drive off occasionally checking to see if Verena was following close by. After driving for a good hour and a half they arrived at the ICC quarter in Birmingham.
"Why are we at a detective's headquarters?" Verena questioned stepping out of her car, as she stared at the enormous building in front of her.
"Oh, right, I should've said so earlier. ICC is short for Investigations Command Center. Sorry," Kyle apologised his face flushed red.
Rubbing the nape of his neck he guided Verena to the reception.
"First day on the field, huh?" Verena inquired as she and Kyle went through the security.
Kyle bashfully nodded giving her an entrance pass. "First day and first mission. Please come this way."
"Aren't you a little to open about your 'mission' kid?" Verena questioned trailing behind the naive kid as he directs her down the building to the elevator.
Kyle turned to face her with an anxious smile as he pushed the level 14 button "Please don't tell anyone. I've often been told that I've got a loose tongue, but it can't be helped. When I was in Korea, my family was very open regarding everything, even in our neighbourhood everyone just speaks openly. So I think that's why I can't keep secrets."
Verena gave a small smile, nodding her head. "I won't say a word. It doesn't concern me."
Once the door of the elevator opened, Kyle took Verena to the furthest room on the right. The door had a big sign that read
"Scorpion Angel." Kyle opened the door and soon after they were greeted by a man with brown hair, with honey brown eyes dressed in a 'Kiss the check' lolita fashion apron and a wooden spoon seized on his left hand.
"Goddammit, Kyle Nichols Park Junior you were meant to be here an hour ago! You are lucky that Alex left to go to his meeting already - god knows what he'll say when he sees you've messed up and that you're late," the man raged holding Kyle by his ear - a mirror image of a parents yell at their kids for doing something wrong.
Verena cleared her throat to stop the laughter that was forming, diverting both their attention to her.
"You managed to bring her here in the end, huh? Not bad kid," the unknown man glanced at Kyle who was busy fixing his dark brown hair that got messed up in the process of getting told off.
"Sorry about that. It a pleasure to meet you, Miss Lawrence. Detective Clark Hunter, Second-in-command of the Scorpion Angel." Clark introduced himself by offering his hand to her.
"Attorney Verena Lawrence." replied shaking his hands. "What exactly is your motive for bringing me here Mr Hunter?"
"I need your help."
The third person who had just entered the room, quickly took Verena attention, "Deactivate Alexander Harrison, First in command of Scorpion Angel. Miss Verena Lawrence, we require your assistance with a case."
