Chapter 19
Steve's nerves were all over the place, it had been a month since he found out that Nat was pregnant and four since he knew he was going to propose.
"Just relax Steve. You know Tasha loves you and of course she's going to say yes." Clint, Sam and Maria were trying to reassure him. He had not only asked Maria and Clint's blessing because they were the closest thing to family Nat had but because he also wanted their help, along with Sams. Over the last three months, they had been planning this beautiful proposal hoping that it would be perfect.
"I know. I'm just freaking out. I want everything to go perfectly. You know her better than anyone. She's gonna appreciate anything." Maria said.
"Ok you guys, I appreciate it. I'm going to get her now."
"Alright knock her dead Dad!" Clint said enthusiastically. He was happy for the two of them. Nat deserved it and he felt Steve was the perfect match for her. Both knew about the pregnancy, they spilled the beans one morning in Hawkeye's Cafe when Steve's overprotectiveness spilled over on whether or not coffee was good for the baby, neither realizing that they had gotten a tad louder than expected. Of course, since Clint knew, Nat had to tell Maria to keep things level and since they knew, Steve told Sam.
"Thanks you guys for your help."
"No problem." They all chimed through the phone.
Steve hung up and took the elevator to the apartment. He told Nat to be ready by 7 and he was on time as usual. He walked into their apartment with a bouquet of white roses.
"Nat, baby, I'm home."
"Coming." She yelled.
She walked out of their bedroom looking ravishing. Her hair was curled, cascading over her shoulders with a beautiful emerald necklace hanging at her neck. Her black dress showing off the extra curves that she now had. Her stomach wasn't showing yet but she had gained just enough for Steve to do a double take. Nat greeted him with a huge smile and an awe as she looked at the roses in his hands.
"They're beautiful Steve."
"Not as beautiful as you."
"Always the charmer." She replied kissing him. She put the flowers in a vase nearby with water before turning to her boyfriend and letting him lead her out.
"Whats on the agenda tonight?"
"Just us with food, the stars music, a dance or two."
"Sounds lovely."
Nat held his hand as they stepped into the waiting black car. Her surprise evident.
"Is there a special occasion I don't know about?"
"No, I just want my girlfriend and mother of child to have the most comfortable ride possible. You deserve the world Nat." Her words fell on the tips of lips as she kissed him. She was incredibly happy to be in his arms day in and out. There was never a dull moment between the two. The ride was 45 minutes but between the kissing and touching, it felt like 15. The driver opened the door for them and Steve held out his hand for her to take.
Nat stepped onto the sidewalk, blocking out the sounds of honking horns and passerby conversations. In front of her was the Empire State building. She had always walked by but never actually been inside.
"Come on." He walked her over to the entrance where he called out to a man named Thor.
"Aye Steve, yes. Right this way." Nat didn't say anything just glanced at Steve smiling as she realized what was happening.
Thor led the two to the top of the building where they reached the rooftop. It was beautiful. Lights lit up the night and there was a table for two with a candle in the middle. A group of classical musicians played softly off to the side.
"If you two need anything, let Loki, your server know and he will get me."
"Thank you Thor."
"This is beautiful." Nat said in awe. The new of the city was breathtaking. She could see everything. Her eyes watered at the sight. It felt magical.
"Its all for you baby. You serve this and so much more." He said as he hugged her from behind.
"I can't even..." Nat was at a loss for words. She turned to him hugging him tightly. She didn't know why he was going through such a grand gesture but it was appreciated either way.
The two sat at the table and looked through the menu. Steve tried to relax, but the small black box burned a hole in his pocket. He wanted to at least wait until dinner was through.
"Ill have the steak with mash potatoes and a glass of lemon water." Nat ordered as the waiter came to the table.
"Ill take the Spaghetti bolognese with a glass of water as well." He didn't want any alcohol in his system tonight, he wanted everything to be clear and in his memory just the way it is now.
"How did you pull this off?" She said directing his attention.
"I know Thor, we went to college together, just my luck that he happens to manage this place and could open it up for us."
"That was very sweet of him."
"Yea it was. He's an incredibly nice man."
"Would you like to dance?" Steve asked hoping to get moving so he could stop thinking about the ring.
"I'd love to." Nat stood and her hands fell in his as they swayed the music. It was perfect. Her head resting on his chest as the soft sounds of violin played. "Theres no where else I'd rather be than in your arms." She said quietly.
"Wouldn't want you anywhere else."
Their feet glided across the floor, Nat dress blowing gently in the wind. She was grateful that someone thought ahead and placed multiple heaters outside. She knew without them shed be as cold as ice. Eventually, the song came to an end and the two sat down again.
"You think we'll have a boy or a girl?" She asked.
"A boy, with red hair, just like his mother."
"Mmm, I was thinking blonde to take after his father." She smirked. "but I suppose we will find out in two months."
"I know, I'm excited. We're gonna go on so many family trips and take a ridiculous amount of family portraits."
"With matching pajama sets for Christmas?" She smiled.
"Is there any other way?" He joked.
"He or she is gonna be so spoiled."
"Well with you as a mother, I believe it."
"Oh please, you are gonna be putty in their hands."
"And you won't?" He said raising an eyebrow.
"Nope." She replied popping her p.
He laughed at her antics before letting her have it.
"You know, were gonna make a beautiful baby, whether it's a boy or a girl." He said.
"I know and I'm happy it's with you."
"Me too." As they continued their heart to heart, Loki came out with their meals. It was delicious to say the least. They devoured their food and had dessert as well. After letting their food digest, Steve knew it was finally time. Nat was looking over at the skyline with the wind blowing her hair back gently. Her face illuminated with the flickers of orange light from the fire. Her face looked at peace as if she was content with everything that was happening in her life at that moment.
"Nat." He called gently. She turned to look at him with a glint in her eye.
"You know this last year has been incredible with you. From meeting you to falling in love with you. I know you've ben through a lot and I'm glad that you've come out stronger from it. You are the reason, I go on everyday. You're the reason I wake up, to see your face is a blessing to me and I'm so grateful to have you." Steve said standing up, walking to her side. "I look forward to the day when my last name will become yours and our love will give a birth to a new family." He continues as he knelt down, opening the ring box in his hand. "My heart is racing because all I want to do is make you mine, so will you make me the happiest man on earth and say yes? Say you'll marry me?"
Nat looked down at him with tears in her eyes. Her hands covering her mouth as she stared at the man she loved. Nat glanced at the ring, then back at him, nodding her head quickly. "YES, YES, Of course I'll marry you." Her arms wrapping around his neck.
"Oh thank god." He said hugging her back. "I love you so much baby." He pulled back, giving her a kiss and grabbing her hand to slide the ring on.
Nat looked at it and was overwhelmed. "Its so beautiful Steve."
"I saw it and knew it was yours."
Nat brushed the tears from her eyes and hugged him again. They were crazy in love. The music around them continued to play, while they basked in their joy.
"I have one more thing for you." Steve said.
Nat shook her head in disbelief.
Steve went to the small table that had been tucked off to the side and grabbed a tiny box. He handed it to her and pulled his seat in front of hers. Nat carefully pulled at the ribbon and lifted the top of the box. Her eyes watered before she could fully finish opening it. "There's no way." She said shaking her head. "How?" She asked.
"I know people." Steve said sheepishly. He knew she would appreciate it and it would mean a lot to her.
Nat lifted the lid once more. This time fully taking it off and examining the gift. Inside was the photo of her and her parents that was destroyed. Now it was in pristine condition and almost brand new. She didn't know how and she didn't care. She was just glad to have it back to how it used to be.
Nat savored the photo and eventually put it on the table to show Steve just how much she appreciated. "How about we go home and I show you just how much I love you?" Nat asked.
"I like the sound of that."
Steve grabbed her hand and she took her gift, leading them home.
An hour later, they were crashing through the front door of their home, stripping off the clothes as fast as possible. They didn't bother making it to the bed before he was inside of her, thrusting hard and fast. Steve knew how she liked it and he was more than happy to work her over tonight. They went from the floor, to the couch and to the bed. They were spent by the time it all came to an end.
____________
Morning came and Nat stretched her sore body. She didn't remember making it to the bed but she knew it happened. As she stretched out her arms, the sun caught the ring's diamonds and it glistened in the light. A smile cast over her face. How the hell could she be so lucky? Yes, it was sudden but so was everything else in her life. The ring, the baby...The baby...Nat froze at the thought, could it be? She glanced over at her fiancé's sleeping face. Hoping that thought that had just came into her mind was just a figment of her imagination. She felt him move beside her and not long heard his baritone voice, "good morning beautiful."
"Morning." She said sweetly trying to put back the thoughts in her head.
"Want pancakes?" He asked as he sat up.
"I'd love some."
"Good, coming right up." He slipped out of bed and left Nat alone to think. She looked over at Bash who was sleeping peacefully oblivious to her dilemma. Did he really want to marry her? She pondered or was he simply doing it because of the baby in her belly? She loves him but if thats the only reason he was going to marry her, she couldn't possibly go through with it. Her heart began to ache at the idea. As much as she hated to doubt, she had to know. She went into the bathroom and brushed her teeth, then stepped out to see Steve.
She leaned against the kitchen counter and stared.
"What is it?" He asked once he felt her standing there.
"I have to ask you something and I want complete transparency."
Steve looked over at her and immediately stopped what he was going. He turned off the eye and leaned back.
"Ok..."
"Did you.." She took a deep breath. "did you only ask me to marry you because I'm pregnant?" She asked quickly, almost hating the taste of the words as they left her mouth.
Steve didn't say anything instead walked passed her into the bedroom. She silently cursed herself. Nat couldn't believe she asked such a stupid question. Of course, he didn't ask just because she was pregnant, but was it really that crazy to assume? Just as she was about to follow, he came back out with his phone in hand, dialing a number.
"Ste—"
"Hold on." He said as he let the number ring.
"Hello" A voice who Nat was all too familiar with answered.
"Hey Maria, Im going to ask you something and I just need you to answer simply. Can you do that for me?"
"Sure." Nat could hear the confusion in her voice and felt embarrassed.
"When did I tell you I wanted to marry Nat?"
"Um...about four months ago."
"Ok and when did I find out about the baby."
"Maybe a month or so ago. Why?"
"Just trying to explain something. Thank you Maria. We will talk soon."
"Ok bye." Steve hung up the phone and looked at Nat.
"Steve I'm sorry, I know it's stupid I just had to know."
"Nat, It's not stupid for you to question that but just know. I'm never going to commit to something that deep unless I really love you, regardless of you being the mother of my child. I love you and I want to marry you because I can't see my life any other way. You're important to me and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, so to answer your question no, I didn't propose to you because I found out you were pregnant."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"It's ok. No more apologizes."
"Ok thank you." Steve kissed Nat and gave her a deep hug.
"Come on, let's get you and this little guy filled."
Nat smiled and sat at the table, happy to get the conversation over with. Everything would be just fine.

Three months later...
"Baby hurry up, were gonna be late."
"I know I just forgot my wallet. I'll run up and get it." Steve said quickly before running back in the building to get his wallet.
"Mhmm." Nat stood in front of the apartment building door, scrolling on her phone while she waited for her fiancé.
It wasn't long when she heard the voice of someone she never wanted to hear again. "Natasha? Is that you?" She turned halfway around to see Bruce Banner. He looked healthy and sober, but she couldn't help but feel somewhat frightened at the sight of him.
"Oh my god it is you." He said reaching out to hug.
"Don't touch me!" She said stepping back fully facing him.
"Woah, relax I'm not gonna hurt you. I just wanted to see you. I...I wanted to apologize for what I did." He said looking her over. "Oh wow, you're pregnant. I can't believe it." He said putting his hand out to touch her stomach.
"I said don't touch me." She said hitting his hand away." The last thing she wanted was her unborn baby to be tainted by this man.
He immediately noticed her ring as she pulled her hand back. "I guess you moved on huh. A ring and a baby. I didn't realize you could have kids, what did you do IVF?" He probed ignoring her discomfort.
"The old fashioned way, apparently it wasn't me who had the problem." That seemed to strike a nerve because she watched as he clenched his jaw and stepped towards her.
"Is there a problem here?" She heard from behind her. Steve had came out just in time, stepping in front of his fiancé.
"Oh its you." Bruce sneered.
"Yea its me and if I find you talking to my fiancé, there's going to be problem. Get away from here and dont let me see you around here again."
Bruce didn't respond, he just looked around Steve and gave Nat his best mean mug, but walked away as Steve stepped towards him. Once, Bruce was a good enough distance, he turned to Nat with nothing but concern.
"Are you ok? Did he touch you?"
"No, no I'm ok. I'm glad you came out when you did."
"Me too. If you see him again, you let me know ok?"
"Ok, I will."
The two walked hand in hand to their appointment. They found out they were having a boy and immediately started planning names.
On June 23, 2020. The two welcome blue eyed, red headed son named James Rogers and two months following, Nat officially become Mrs. Natasha Rogers.
