In Your Dreams

"You were talking in your sleep again last night." Lauren mutters, taking another sip of her coffee. My fingers tighten around my own mug.

"Yeah?" I ask as though it's nothing, but it worries me. I know it worries her too.

When I was a kid I used to get really bad night terrors and almost nobody would be able to wake me up. It was terrifying, for me and for anyone who happened to witness it; to the point where I would never want to go to sleepovers with my friends, and where I was once hospitalised after thrashing about so much one night I accidentally punched myself in the eye, therefore giving myself a black eye. Okay, so maybe I was hospitalised mainly because they wanted to study my sleep patterns and see what medication I could possibly be put on to help subdue the terrors, but the black eye is what triggered that and none of the medications seemed to work all that much anyway.

Yeah, they were bad, but then they seemed to get a little easier and a lot less violent when my family and I moved to Miami in my third year of high school. I wouldn't thrash so much and my screams turned to shouts and then to talking, and then I rarely did anything. They became nothing but nightmares that I was able to wake myself from.

It's been so long since I'd so much as muttered in my sleep, as far as anyone was aware, so the idea of that happening again wasn't very appealing.

Maybe I was just being paranoid, though. It's normal for people to talk in their sleep, right?

Her hand reaches over to rest over mine, and I realise my eyes had drifted to the hot drink before me whilst I'd been daydreaming, so she knows I wasn't paying attention.

"Sorry," I say quietly and look up at her, peeling my fingers from around my mug and intertwining them with hers instead, resting our hands between us on the sofa.

"You said some... interesting things."

I look over at her and she shuffles closer to me, putting our joined hands over my shoulders and pulling me into her.

"I'm sorry if I scared you," I mutter, and she squeezes my shoulder reassuringly.

"You didn't. It wasn't scary, you were just talking." She whispers, "You, um, you asked me to marry you, actually."

"What?" I giggle nervously, straining my neck a little to be able to look up at her.

"You were all like, 'Lolo... I'm your wife now.' so I told you you're not and you were really confused and asked why not, and I said because we weren't married yet, so you asked me to marry you." She explains, interrupting herself a few times with chuckles. My cheeks flush.

"And..." I begin, and those emerald eyes bore right into mine, "What did you say?"

Instead of a response, she leans down and pecks me on the lips, pulling away slowly and with a smirk.

"I said go back to sleep because maybe I'd marry you in your dreams, but now you're awake... Y/n, will you marry me? I mean, I don't have a ring or anything and I'd liked to have made it more special but-"

"Yes." I whisper, and her nervous rambling is silent as she frowns down at me, "Yeah, Yes! I'll- I'll marry you, Lauren!"

In one swift motion, she pulls me up to be straddling her lap and buries her face in my neck as she laughs like a child, and I do the same. Then we reconnect our lips and it lasts a little longer than a peck this time.

We're going to get married.

Thank you, Sleeping Me!
