Diner
(Written a while ago...)
Your friends erupted into laughter, but you had missed the joke, too preoccupied with a certain pair of piercing green eyes.
"Y/n, what are you-" Ally's voice was muffled by your distracted mind when the black-haired girl across the room laughed, the sound managing to float over the indistinct chatter of the school cafeteria, and her eyes fell onto yours. You blushed furiously, realising you'd been caught staring by the beautiful irl herself, and tore your eyes away. Ally and Dinah followed where your gaze had led and turned back to you with knowing, but shocked expressions.
"Oh. My. God!" Dinah exclaimed, laughing again. Suddenly, your hands became extremely interesting, and you didn't dare look away from them.
"What's happening?" Normani asked as she finally got to the lunch table.
"Y/n was totally ogling Jauregay." Dinah explained, clapping her hands together at the discovery.
"Girl!" Normani said loudly, sitting beside you and opposite Dinah.
"What? No I wasn't!" You tried to defend yourself... key word being tried.
"Jauregui?" She then asked and Dinah nodded, both completely ignoring you.
"Do you have a crush on her?" Dinah asked and your jaw clenched before you could say anything. She must've taken that as a 'Yes' because she gasped and covered her mouth in disbelief.
"Guys, stooop." You mumbled, though you know they wouldn't listen.
"You should go talk to her!" Ally suggested and everyone else at the table nodded in agreement. Your eyes found their way back to the girl you were all discussing.
"What? No, I can't. It's Lauren freaking Jauregui for crying out loud. I'd make a complete fool out of myself and-"
"Maybe, but it'd be cute." Ally smiled reassuringly, but you shook your head rapidly.
"Go!" Dinah groaned, pushing you slightly until you were out of your seat and stumbling towards the other girl's table.
Their's burst into laughter again as one of the guys who sat there stood and held his arm up with the other on his hip, examining his nails and obviously doing an impression of someone. When he sat back doesn't the guys to his side playfully pushed him about as they recovered from the laugh.
That's when Lauren looked around again and saw you, and your breathing hitched as your foot got caught on the leg of someone's chair, your arms clinging forwards as you very ungracefully made your way to the floor.
The sounds of the room synchronised into a singular "Ooo" and you remained in all fours, trying to process what had happened and how to recover from it. You opened your eyes, realising they had closed midway through your descent, only to be met with the sight of loosely-tied, worn leather combat boot.
"Perfect." You groaned sarcastically under your breath.
"Are you okay?" Asked the familiarly husky voice, and your eyes slowly traveled up to meet hers.
"Yeah." Your voice was a thousand octaves higher than usual, and she chuckled a little while holding out her hand.
"Let me help you up." She offered and you hesitatingly took her hand. She pulled you up with relative ease and placed her other hand in your shoulder as she gave you a once over to make sure you was, in fact, okay... or maybe she was checking you out but you pushed that hopeful thought from your mind.
"I feel like I recognise you from somewhere." She said but you knew it was more of a question that a statement. You failed to notice that neither of you had let go of the other's hand, but when she ran her other through her dark hair, the spot on your shoulder grew cold.
"I'm in your history class." You responded, nervous that brining that up would remind her of all the times she had caught you staring before. The worry went away, mostly, when she smiled warmly.
"You work at Mo's Diner, don't you?" She asked instead.
"Y-Yeah." You stuttered. You were only really a cleaner, though your official job description said otherwise. You were supposed to be a waitress, but your Uncle Mike (not Mo, that was his father) had told you not to expect that you'd get any special treatment simply because you were family but apparently that didn't stop him from making you clean up non-stop. Honestly, you had no idea what the actual cleaners even did any more.
"I didn't think you'd ever noticed me." You said quietly and slowly felt the eyes of the cafeteria moving off of you both.
"It's hard not to notice such a cutie cleaning tables all day." She commented and laughed a little, "You should ask amo for a promotion; your gorgeous face would do a great job at drawing customers in." Damn, was she really saying these things or had you hit your head when you fell and passed out, or maybe died because you were pretty sure this is what heaven is like. You didn't have the guts to admit that this was real.
"Mike." You corrected her awkwardly, not sure of what else to do in this situation.
"What?" She asked, raising a confused brow.
"Mike. You said I should ask my grandpa for a promotion but it's my uncle who owns the diner now." You explained, and now both of those perfect eyebrows rose, eyes widening a little.
"You're telling me your uncle own my favourite place in the world?" She questioned and you hesitated before nodding.
"Oh my god." She chuckled, and then the bell rang so you said goodbye and turned to leave but she called out "Wait!" and pulled on your hand, which is when you noticed you'd still not let go, either of you.
"Can I, um, get your number? I'd really like to get to know you." She said while rubbing the back of her neck and letting go of your hand.
"Yes!" You blurted out and then blushed, "Yeah, I mean, sure."
Fumbling a little, you took your phone from your back pocket and unlocked it, handing it to her. In a second she had her number in there and was smirking up at you.
"Send me a text sometime." She said and you nodded with a small smile, "And I'll see you at the diner tonight, yeah?"
"Every night." You nodded again with a chuckle and she winked before heading back to her table.
After a moment, you turned to see your eager friends right there behind you.
"So... what happened?" Ally asked immediately and you put on your best poker face even though it must've been evident that you were screaming inside.
"Oh, you know... I just got her number, that's all." You shrugged nonchalantly but immediately started smiling afterwards.
"You're welcome, bish." Dinah said sassy, but gave you a hug anyway.
"Thank you, D." You rolled your eyes but the smile didn't leave. It didn't really leave for the rest of the day.
