The Lesson from the Past
My hands trembling as I removed the lid
From the leather box wrapped in plastic,
Excited to immerse myself
In the memories of my past,
Of my precious school days.
Various souvenirs I discovered
The little trinkets I received,
And the numerous little handicrafts I made
But never got the chance to give.
I took out the contents one by one
My memories flooding back
Rewinding to those jolly, carefree days
Where we laughed heartily, and were foolish.
My smile, which widened as I dug deeper,
Changed into a grimace
As I reached the end
And took out a woven bracelet.
It was a beautiful thread bracelet
A pretty ornament
Woven with patterns of cherry blossoms
The threads so fine
Flawless even through a magnifying glass
But the friendship it took me back to
Was far from perfect.
Supposedly my best friend, my other half
My inseparable companion for ten years,
The person even inside my personal bubble
Began to drift apart
The different beads spilled far.
She got new companions, and I was left alone
After I tried my best to be at her side,
But I was naïve, and didn't get the hint
That I wasn't needed anymore
And clung on until I received the shock.
I still treasure the bracelet, a gift
From her, to me
Because the snap was short,
And the bond- very long.
I had a lot of memorable moments with her
We practically grew up together
The bracelet is a reminder now
Never to trust blindly.
You are a different entity,
A unique individual,
Be your own self, your own best friend,
Never dependent on others,
While maintaining strong bonds with others.
These experiences make me stronger,
Make me who I am now,
A better version of myself
Which will continue to rise and shine,
And keep learning from life.
