"Oh, Minghao, give me your plate," Shoi-ming said, holding his hands out. Minghao gave him a confused look but handed him the plate anyways.
"You don't like carrots, right? So I'll have them. Here, I'll give you the mashed potatoes I got with my food instead," Shoi-ming told him as he took the carrots off of Minghao's plate and placed them on his own. He then set Minghao's plate down and lifted his own plate, scraping his mashed potatoes onto Minghao's plate. Minghao smiled. He was such a considerate person.
"Thanks," Minghao replied as he took his plate back from Shoi-ming.
"No problem," Shoi-ming responded, beaming brightly at Minghao before taking a bite of his food. Out of the corners of his eyes, Minghao noticed Jun scowling at the two of them. He rolled his eyes and chose to ignore Jun as he cut off a piece of his steak.
The group of four ate their food mostly in silence, though there were a few exchanges of words between Ai and Shoi-ming. Minghao, who was rapidly devouring his meal, didn't speak until he was finished with his food. When he was done eating, he sighed happily and started a conversation with Ai, who was also done with her food, about the aquarium they went to earlier. As the other two finished their food, the waiter came to their table and handed them the bill.
Ai thanked him, and she and Minghao looked at the bill together. It was pretty expensive, but that was to be expected for a group of four people. After a few minutes of arguing with Minghao, Ai convinced him to let her and Shoi-ming to pay this time. As Ai and Shoi-ming waited for the waiter to come back with their change, Minghao looked through the large window panes of the restaurant, staring at the large fountain outside. He nudged Jun, who followed his gaze and nodded.
"Hey, Minghao and I are going to go outside," Jun told them. "Meet us out there when you're done."
"Alright, have fun!" Shoi-ming winked at Minghao, and Minghao responded with a glare. He walked out of the restaurant with Jun and sprinted over to the fountain, grinning as he ran his fingers through the water.
"Minghao," Jun called, and Minghao looked up immediately. Jun pointed at a statue of a bird. "Look. This one looks like you." Minghao walked over and looked at the statue, rolling his eyes at Jun.
"Hey, let's take a picture with these!" Minghao suggested. Jun nodded and pulled out his phone. The two of the posed for the picture, making sure to get the bird statue in the selfie as well. Minghao peered at the photo over Jun's shoulder.
"It's cute." Minghao smiled. "Let's take a full body picture with them too!"
"We should mimic their poses," Jun said.
"Ooh, good idea! I'll do this one, you do that one," Minghao replied.
"That one's pose looks so dumb though," Jun complained.
"Perfect for you," Minghao teased.
"Hey, lovebirds! What are you two doing?" Shoi-ming shouted as he and Ai walked over to the pair. " Get it? Lovebirds? Because you're standing next to a bunch of bird statues?" Ai sighed in exasperation and ran a hand through her hair. Minghao thrust Jun's phone at him.
"Take a picture for us," Minghao demanded. Shoi-ming nodded and took the phone from him.
"Alright," he agreed.
"He's just gonna end up taking a bunch of selfies. Here, I'll do it," Ai interrupted, grabbing the phone from Shoi-ming. Shoi-ming pouted.
"No need to ruin my fun."
"Ready? I'm taking it now," Ai told the two of them. Once she lowered the phone, Minghao walked over to look at the pictures.
"Aw, they're cute," Minghao said. He showed the pictures to Jun, who nodded in agreement. Shoi-ming huffed sadly then perked up.
"Ai, Ai, look! There's a café! Can we go there and have dessert? Can we, can we?" Shoi-ming begged.
"Ooh, that sounds good. Please, Ai?" Minghao stared at her pleadingly.
"Jun? You okay with it?" Ai asked. Jun shrugged.
"I don't mind."
"Yes! Let's go get dessert then!" Shoi-ming cheered. He grabbed Ai's arm and pulled her towards the shop. Minghao hurried after them, inhaling deeply and smiling as he entered the café. It smelled heavenly.
"Let's sit over there," Shoi-ming said as he pointed at a table for four near the window. "I call sitting next to Minghao!"
"You better not steal any of my dessert from me," Minghao warned. Shoi-ming grinned.
"Who, me? I would never!"
"Does someone want to go up and order for us?" Jun asked. "Actually, I can go, if you want. My treat, since you guys paid for dinner. Order whatever you'd like."
"Really? Thanks, Jun!" Shoi-ming replied. "Can you get me a cappuccino and a slice of chocolate cake?"
"I'll just have a latte," Ai told Jun. She stood up from her seat. "I'm going to go to the restroom."
"Hot chocolate and a slice of tiramisu for me," Minghao responded. Jun nodded.
"I'll be right back then," Jun said before walking to the counter to order. Minghao scowled when he saw the girl behind the counter blush as Jun talked to her. He faintly heard Jun and the cashier laugh, causing him to grit his teeth.
"Calm down there, Minghao." Shoi-ming placed a hand over Minghao's clenched fist and grinned. Minghao snapped out of his trance.
"Sorry," Minghao apologized awkwardly.
"It's fine. It's cute, actually. You really like him, don't you?" Shoi-ming replied. Minghao nodded.
"You know, you liked him when we were kids too," Shoi-ming continued.
"We were kids, Shoi-ming, I'm pretty sure I didn't even know what a crush was," Minghao retorted.
"Maybe you didn't know what a crush was, but you did like him," Shoi-ming responded. "You always brightened up whenever you saw him, you always looked up to him. Hell, you even gave him your lunch once because he left his at home! And it was your favorite food! You never shared that food with anyone, not even me!"
"What are we talking about?" Ai asked as she sat back down in her seat.
"Minghao's crush on Jun. He liked him when we were kids too, you know," Shoi-ming answered.
"Really? Aw, that's so cute!" Ai smiled. "It's the old childhood friends to lovers trope, huh?"
"The only difference is that the love is unrequited," Minghao replied.
"Here's your cake and tiramisu," Jun said as he approached the table, placing the plates in front of Shoi-ming and Minghao respectively.
"This looks so good!" Minghao exclaimed, smiling down at his dessert. He looked over at Shoi-ming's slice of cake. "Hey, let me try a bite."
"Let me have some of yours too," Shoi-ming responded, grabbing the fork from Minghao's plate and cutting off a piece of tiramisu. He shoved it in his mouth excitedly and hummed in approval.
"Good?" Minghao asked.
"Delicious. I think this is what the food in heaven tastes like," Shoi-ming answered. "How's the chocolate cake?"
"Don't know, let me try it." Minghao took a bite of the cake. "Wow, this is really tasty!"
"Minghao, can I try some of yours too?" Jun requested.
"Sure," Minghao said, giving him the fork. Jun cut off a piece of the cake and chewed it, nodding in approval.
"It's good," Jun decided.
"Ai, do you want some?" Minghao offered. Ai shook her head.
"I'm not in the mood for tiramisu today. The chocolate cake is looking good though," Ai replied, holding her hand out for Shoi-ming's fork. Minghao grinned as Shoi-ming sighed and begrudgingly handed his girlfriend the fork. Shoi-ming wrapped his arm around the back of Minghao's chair while he waited for Ai to give him the fork back.
"This is good. I'm having more of this," Ai told him, smirking mischievously.
"Ai!" Shoi-ming whined. Ai took another bite of the dessert and moaned appreciatively.
"You're the worst," Shoi-ming declared. Minghao grinned at the pair then glanced at Jun. He tilted his head in confusion. Jun was glaring at something behind Minghao. He waved his hand in front of Jun's face.
"Jun? You okay?" Minghao asked. Jun's eyes snapped to Minghao's.
"Fine, sorry," Jun responded.
"See? You care so much about him. You two really would make a great couple," Shoi-ming said.
"Quit it," Minghao hissed, shooting daggers at Shoi-ming with his eyes. He was being too obvious. Minghao glanced over to Jun, but the older boy didn't seem to have heard what Shoi-ming had said. Minghao sighed with relief. He knew that Shoi-ming was just trying to help, but Minghao didn't want Jun to know about his feelings just yet. He wasn't ready for that yet.
