The sun was not shining anymore, and the light in her beautiful brown eyes had vanished with it. Soft wrinkled skin, a woman once full of life, laughter and love ceased to be. Now an empty shell lay on the bed. At least, at the end, he had been there grasping her hand when he felt her last pulse, and then she was gone, just like that.

Mr Richard Head had been chasing Annie his entire life, ever since they were teenagers all those years ago. She was the candle, his illuminating light, and now, well, that light had been put out, not from heavy rain, but due to her heart failing her.

"Richard?" his nurse and carer, Mrs Shelby, said in a tone of sadness. "You have to let go. She's gone now to be with the angels."

Angels?

The old man scoffed at the idea of God. How could a caring, heavenly father allow this to happen to him? Or to anyone, for that matter. Richard always assumed that he would die first. His life wasn't ideal, between heavy smoking and drinking, not to mention drugs in his younger years. Death should have taken him. But no, destiny had other plans.

Still grasping Annie's cold, colourless hand, he leant down and placed one final kiss on her knuckles. "My love, my Annie," he whispered against her skin. "If only you had listened to me when we first met, if only you had accepted your love back then. We could've had a life together, and—"

Something snapped deep within him, and Richard felt the first wail tremble from his lips. However, if Annie could speak, she would have told him, 'Pull yourself together, you moron. Why the fuck are you crying? I told you when we were young I would never be yours. Not even if we were the last people on earth.' Richard chuckled, although it came out as a weird-sounding sob.

Annie only took sixty-seven years to admit her true feelings; unfortunately, it was too late.
