Jonathan grew up with his parents until he was about 9. His mom then had a coming out as a lesbian and left the family. He actually isn't mad at her for it, he just sometimes really misses her. A few months after that, his dad died in a plane crash, leading into Jonathan having to move in with his grandpa. The relationship with him is pretty good.
