She's Cheer Captain and I'm on the Bleachers

lmao worst title EVER

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Third Person POV
Every school has its sport.
In Teen Wolf, the school sport is lacrosse. In High School Musical the sport is basketball. In a lot of high schools, the school sport is football. But at Luke Hemmings' school the sport is hockey.
Luke just so happens to be the captain of the hockey team, granting him the title of popularity. Is he the most popular person in the whole school? Pretty much. Although popularity is different for him than it is in the typical cliche movie or book.
He doesn't own the school, and doesn't walk around with his chin up and slamming puny freshmen into the lockers. No, he's a nice guy with his own friends and doesn't seem to take it to heart that really everyone in the school admires him at least a little.
Although he doesn't follow the stereotype of populars, one particular thing falls into place for him. And that is girls.
Short girls, tall girls, skinny girls, big girls, pretty girls, nerdy girls; you name it. He's got nearly all of them swooning at him as he passes in the hallway.
Now for any normal teenage boy this would be the dream, but Luke doesn't really bat for that team.
Actually, he's got the sweetest little boyfriend in the world that he loves to pieces, and he is in fact sitting in the stands of the rink for one of the biggest games all season. He's cheering for Luke of course.
He's got this cute little sign with #19 in a heart next to "O Captain! My Captain!" because he's a literature freak and, well, he loves puns.
Luke had scored once already and Ashton cheered like his life depended on it. Luke had glanced over in the direction of Ashton's shouts, and Ashton blew him a kiss. Luke caught it and pulled it to his chest. He probably winked too, but Ashton couldn't see past the helmet.
Honestly, Ashton is such a nerd. And honestly, most girls hate him for it. They hate it because how could such an outsider get with someone like Luke? It's unfair because they work so hard on the cheer squad or the dance team and even wear a little extra makeup because they know Luke is in their class.
To them, Ashton didn't do anything to deserve Luke.
Luke fell in love with Ashton and Ashton didn't even realize it. Okay, maybe Ashton had a little crush, too, but how could Luke actually reciprocate?
They started dating near the middle of last year, junior year, and are now a little past one year of dating in senior year.
Luke started to notice Ashton in some of his classes, a boy he never really noticed before, and was immediately in love. He thought it was cute how he furiously scribbled notes in history class, and loved how he would get all flustered when teachers would call on him. He loved when Ashton would scrunch up his nose when he would squint and thought it was so cute when he pushed up his glasses.
Luke knew he was really in love when Ashton had to present his English project. He stuttered with every sentence and his hands shook at his sides. He seemed like he was close to tears and all Luke wanted to do was pull him into a hug. Luke then knew he definitely wanted the boy.
So not long after Luke finally got up the courage to talk to him. Ashton looked at him with wide eyes when he approached him, and Luke remembers it so clearly.
They started dating shortly after that.
Ashton has definitely broken out of his shell around Luke, but still not so much other people. Other kids at their school already make fun of him for a being kinda nerdy and kinda shy, but now since so many girls want to be in his shoes he gets even more hate.
Ashton handles it really well most of the time because he's strong and now has Luke at his side, but he usually doesn't tell Luke about it because he's so incredibly protective. He loves that about Luke, but he doesn't want to cause any problems.
So he keeps the taunting words within himself and lives his life.
He's not sitting with anyone in the stands, he's actually more in the parent section the student section because he has no friends at this school. He's got two friends from another school, but that's really all.
He continues to cheer for Luke and received a lot of dirty glares from all the girls down the bleachers who were also cheering for Luke. It didn't really bother him that they were cheering for him, but it bothered him how they acted like he wasn't a part of Luke's life. It bothered him that they were convinced that the fact Ashton was in a relationship with Luke didn't matter and they could take as much of Luke as they wanted.
It's as if they don't care at all that Luke is Ashton's boyfriend, they don't care that Luke isn't their's to take. It also makes Ashton very insecure to know that one day someone who is better for Luke than he is could and probably will snatch Luke away from him.
Luke doesn't know this, though.
Ashton doesn't like to trouble people with his problems.
And so Ashton tried to ignore the screeching chants from the irritating girls across the bleachers as he enjoyed the rest of the game. He yelled and whooped when the buzzer went off because they had won.
The whole team got together in the middle of the rink and smacked each other on the helmets in celebration because jocks are weird.
The stands were going crazy, and Ashton grinned when Luke took off his helmet. He looked at him and mouthed 'meet you soon?' Ashton nodded and gave his boyfriend a thumbs up. Luke grinned fondly and puckered his lips to send Ashton a quick kiss before he skated to the locker room.
Ashton brought his sign and his messenger bag to the exit, avoiding the cold stares at the back of his head as he went to wait for Luke where they always meet. He sat down on a bench and waited patiently for the sweaty boys to stream from the locker rooms down the hallway.
After about 10 minutes that exact thing happened. The entire team came down the hall, a cloud of smelly heat following them.
A bunch them said, "Hey, Ash," or something along the lines of that as they passed, and Ashton smiled politely at them as he waited for Luke to come.
Unlike most of the people at this school the hockey team, or most of them, actually like Ashton because they respect their captain and his decisions. And so they respect Ashton.
Luke finally emerged from the locker room with damp hair and a duffel bag, talking to the coach. His face lit up with a big grin when he saw Ashton waiting for him and he bid his coach goodnight.
"Hey, baby," Luke said when he reached Ashton and then pulled him in for a kiss.
Ashton felt his heart swell a little. They're so in love.
"You played great tonight, did you hear me cheer for you?" Ashton said after they came up for air.
"Of course I did, you're my number one fan," Luke winked and kissed his nose. "But I didn't quite get your sign."
Ashton rolled his eyes and sighed dramatically, "It's from 'O Captain! My Captain' by Walt Whitman. Only one of the most historically famous poems ever, but you wouldn't know because you're an uneducated swine." Luke faked an appalled look as Ashton giggled up at him.
"Hey! I have a B in history thank you very much!" Luke defended himself, but that only sent Ashton into another fit of giggles.
They talked and did cute couple things for a few more minutes before deciding to start walking to the parking lot.
"Hey, what's the bag for?" Luke asked, glancing curiously at Ashton's messenger bag that was slung over his shoulder.
Ashton blushed a little and said, "My mom said I could sleepover."
Luke rolled his eyes but grinned nonetheless and gave the hand that was in his own a squeeze. "Inviting yourself over, eh?"
"Hey, your parents love me so much they could never say no to me, and neither could you, you big sissy."
That earned Ashton a whack in the back of the head. He giggled when Luke glared at him.
"I don't know, I think you may be uninvited tonight," Luke said, shrugging his shoulders.
"Aw, Lukey. Don't be so cold. You can't resist my snuggles and you know it."
***
Ashton was right, Luke really can't resist his snuggles, so later that night the two were found cuddled together in Luke's bed. Ashton's head was tucked comfortably under Luke's chin and Luke's arms were around Ashton's waist.
"How was your day, lovely?" Luke asked quietly into Ashton's hair. Ashton shrugged and Luke sighed, tightening his arms around the smaller boy's waist. "I feel like you've been keeping things from me, babe."
"I'm really not, I just don't know how I feel I guess," Ashton replied honestly, his breath warm on Luke's collarbones.
"How you feel about what?"
"It's nothing important, I promise."
Luke lifted Ashton's chin from beneath his own with his hand and looked him in the eye. "It's obviously making you uncomfortable, whatever it is. It may not be important, but it's still bothering you, Ash. I want you to be able to tell me what it is."
Ashton shrugged and said, "I don't know. It's just all the girls at our school hate me because I'm dating you. I don't really care that much, it's not like I wanted to be their friend or anything, but they're so, I don't know, catty. They-" Ashton stopped short when Luke began to giggle. He furrowed his eyebrows and gave Luke a look.
"Sorry, you're just too cute. Continue," Luke said after his giggles died down and he planted a gentle kiss on Ashton's nose.
Ashton rolled his eyes but continued to spout his thoughts. "I just don't like to walk down the hall and get looks filled with envy and scorn. And because of this burning hatred for me they look even further into my flaws. They scrutinize everything about me! I mean, it doesn't really make me feel bad, but it doesn't make me feel good either. Oh, and they also all have this deeply rooted belief that you and them will end up together and I'm just a small obstruction in the road. That kind of makes me angry, but I don't really show it because-" Luke cut him off again, but this time with a kiss.
"You were rambling, baby," Luke said quietly, smiling fondly in the dark.
"Oopsie."
Luke laughed quietly and nuzzled Ashton's curls with his nose. "Why didn't you ever tell me about this?"
"Like I told you, it's not that important. Also I don't really think there's much you can do about it," Ashton said, shrugging again.
"Well you are important to me, so this is important. But I guess you're right, there's not a whole lot I can do. I can try, though."
"Thank you, Lukey, but don't worry too much about it. Now get some sleep, sweetie, I love you." Ashton kissed Luke's neck, and Luke pulled Ashton back up for another quick kiss.
"Night, darling. I love you, more."
Ashton fell asleep with a smile on his face.
***
The next morning, Ashton stirred around ten o'clock. Being it was a weekend they could have stayed in bed all day, but that's not what Ashton had in mind.
He kissed all over Luke's neck and whispered, "Luuukey," into Luke's ear until he too woke.
"Ash, leave me alone, I'm tired," he grumbled and gently pushed Ashton's face away with a hand. Ashton whined and licked the hand covering his face. "Hey!" Luke said in protest, and Ashton giggled.
"Get up, weenie!" Ashton pleaded. Luke shook his head and tried to hit Ashton with an extra pillow. "Please? We can take a shower if you get up," Ashton tried, and this time Luke cracked an eye open.
"Promise?" he asked hopefully.
Ashton rolled his eyes but smiled anyway, "Yes, I promise."
This got Luke out of bed and soon enough he was dragging Ashton to the bathroom. Both of Luke's parents were out of town today, so really they had to take advantage of this privacy.
***
Once both boys were clean and satisfied per se, the two got dressed and decided to go out for breakfast.
There's a cute, organic diner downtown the couple had visited a few times, and Ashton was really in the mood for some nice eggs and a smoothie that he didn't have to make himself.
They ordered their food and chatted happily amongst themselves, about nothing particularly important.
Something that surprises most people about Luke is that he's a hockey player, mainly because of how he looks and how he dresses. Most of your typical hockey jocks dress like, well, jocks. And a lot of them have that gross, long hair. Luke doesn't, partly because he personally doesn't like it, and partly because Ashton would never allow it.
Luke dresses nice, almost punk rock if you look close enough, so Ashton doesn't mind that people are surprised. He never imagined that he would date a hockey player, so Luke is a nice place is the middle.
The two were enjoying their breakfast together when Ashton noticed these two girls from their school, Emma and Mary, walk into the diner. Ashton visibly rolled his eyes when they started to walk towards their table, and didn't miss the glares they sent him.
"Hey Luke!" Emma piped when they reached the table, and Luke's gaze was drawn from Ashton's face.
"Hm? Oh, uh, hi."
"Crazy seeing you guys here! Do you come here a lot?"
"Uh, kind of I guess." Luke seemed clearly uninterested in the conversation, but the girls either didn't notice or didn't care.
"Oh, well we love it here! You know it's so great to eat healthy and-"
"Uh, not to be rude, but Ashton and I were sort of in the middle of a date." Ashton's face immediately lit up in a smile as he looked at Luke, who sent him a wink.
This seemed to stun the girls, so much that they stuttered out, "Oh, o-okay." Then they walked away to their own table.
"Aw, babe, thank you," Ashton said to his boyfriend who gave him a little smile.
"No problemo, muchacho," he replied, and Ashton made a face.
"Luke, I'm your boyfriend, don't downgrade me to 'muchacho'." Ashton raised his eyebrow at Luke, who just snickered in reply.
"Sorry babes, you almost ready to go?"
"Yeah." Ashton quickly shoved the rest of his eggs in his mouth and Luke watched on with an amused expression.
"You're cute, let's go pay."
***
The boys spent the rest of the day out and about, visiting a few stores and such until Luke suggested that they go ice skating, "because we haven't gone in awhile," he reasoned. Ashton agreed, thinking back to one of their very first dates when Luke took Ashton ice skating.
Luke was obviously great on the ice, being a hockey player and all, and had expected that Ashton would be just as clumsy on ice as he was on ground. He was hoping that he could be all cutesy and help Ashton when he fell, but it turns out he had the wrong impression.
He had no idea that Ashton had figure skated since he was, like, five years old. Ashton quit when he was 13 because he wanted to focus more on school and other things he had going on at the time. He regrets quitting, but he hasn't forgotten a thing. So Luke was pleasantly surprised when Ashton could skate better than himself. Ashton will never forget the look on Luke's face when he did a bunch of spins and jumps and such in the middle of rink. He was stunned. Ashton didn't know this, but he was also just a little bit more in love.
So the couple had fond memories at the rink.
But Ashton also has a not-so-fond memory at a rink.
It was the night that Luke and him had almost broken up, and it was about five months ago.
It was by far the biggest fight they have ever had, and it was over something that could've been avoided, but in retrospect every fight could have been. So neither boy put the blame on the other.
Ashton had been getting suspicious that Luke was cheating on him because he wasn't around as much for a few weeks. He was withdrawn and they barely saw each other for something like three weeks. Luke would always cancel when they made plans, and once on a night that he had cancelled, Ashton was waiting for him at the rink and Luke never showed, he saw him with some girl. He was so upset and called Luke that night so they could talk.
Luke came over, obviously disturbed by Ashton's urgency, and that's when the fighting started.
Ashton was so upset that Luke might be cheating on him that he was in tears when he first saw Luke. Luke tried to comfort him but Ashton pushed him away and started asking him questions about where he's been.
Ashton could tell that Luke was lying when he made up some excuses about being really busy and stressed, so he brought up the girl he saw him with and Luke's demeanor immediately changed.
"Are you spying on me?" he had asked incredulously, but Ashton quickly shook his head.
"I was trusting you, and when you cancelled on me again I had to figure out something for me to do, so I was out and about and saw you with her. Are-are you cheating on me?"
Luke started to say something, but Ashton cut him off, "And don't lie! I would be more hurt if you continued to lie to my face than to know you're cheating."
"Damn it, Ashton, I'm not cheating on you! My grandmother is dying, so I've been gone spending time with her and my family. That girl you saw me with is my cousin who came into town to see grandma one last time."
Ashton was shocked and speechless as silent tears rolled down Luke's face and he stormed out of Ashton's room, and then his house. He winced when the front door slammed, and cried. He cried for God knows how long before he got up and left the house. He drove to Luke's house at close to midnight.
He knocks on the door, hoping not to wake anyone except Luke. He knew Luke wouldn't be asleep anyway.
After a few minutes of periodically knocking Ashton was about to leave when the door swung open and his boyfriend was on the other side.
Ashton immediately hugged the boy in front of him, tightly balling the back of his shirt in his hands and started crying again. "I'm so sorry, Lukey. Wh-why didn't you just tell me?" he sobbed into his shirt, and Luke then tightly wrapped the smaller boy up in his arms.
Luke stepped out onto the front step and shut the door, the boy still tightly wrapped around him, so he wouldn't wake his family.
"I-I don't know," Luke said honestly because he had no other answer, but Ashton wasn't mad at him. He was mad at himself.
"I'm so sorry I accused you of-of cheating. I just couldn't bear the thought that maybe you didn't w-want m-me anymore."
"It's not your fault, baby. I should have told you. And don't you dare think that I don't want you anymore. The last thing I want is to lose you, I love you."
It wasn't the first time he had said it, but it felt so much more special now, so Ashton leaned up and gave him a sweet kiss. The first real kiss since Luke started to become distant.
"I love you, too. Can I stay?" Ashton asked shyly, and Luke gave him a small smile.
"Of course, come on."
Ashton texted his mom to tell her his situation, and then settled down in Luke's arms for the night.
After that fight, the boys agreed to always tell each other the things going on in their lives, and to always be honest. Yes, they've fought since then, but nothing quite as major.
Ashton's glad that there's that balance in their relationship because it seems vital, and Ashton is reminded of it every time they come to this rink.
Luke attempted to be cute and tie Ashton's skates for him, but couldn't figure out how to lace the figure skates up correctly compared to his hockey skates.
The two skated around together, and Ashton practiced some of his old figure skating tricks as Luke watched his pretty boyfriend happily knowing that Ashton was happy.
They didn't stay very long, a little over an hour, and then they decided to head back to Luke's place since his parents were still out.
For the rest of the night the two just enjoyed each others' company and didn't do much aside from slipping in between states of consciousness and nuzzling their noses into each others' chests and hair.
Every time Ashton is put down by some dumb girl at their school, moments like these remind him that, honestly, he doesn't really care as long as Luke is there to give him a reassuring kiss on the noggin.
