Socks
Ashton sighed when he saw his boyfriend snuggled up on the couch, wearing a ridiculously fluffy pair of socks.
"Luke, why do you always wear those? They're so ugly!"
Luke wiggled his toes and grinned. "They're comfy! Try them on and see!"
"Pass." Ashton cuddled up to Luke and pulled a blanket over them. "Lets just watch this movie."
-
Ashton wrinkled his nose and blinked open his eyes, to see Luke smiling and poking his nose.
"Morning babe! I love you!"
Ashton smiled and leaned forward, pressing a kiss to Luke's nose. "What are you doing up so early Lucas?"
"I love waking up next to you and watching you sleep. You mumble in your sleep and roll over a lot." Luke laughed softly and caressed Ashton's blushing cheek. "It's cute."
"Oh shut up." Ashton playfully hit Luke and got out of bed. "I'm not cute. I'm manly as hell."
Luke laughed.
Ashton rolled his eyes and smiled. "At least I don't wear those ugly socks."
Luke pouted and rubbed said socks against his face. "They aren't ugly! They're soft and warm."
He blushed slightly. "And all of our important memories are in here."
Ashton faced him as he pulled on his clothes. "What do you mean?"
"I was wearing these whenever we were together." Luke explained, slipping the socks on. "I did everything in these socks."
"Do you ever wash those?" Ashton teased.
"And lose all the magic?" Luke gasped. "Never!"
Ashton grabbed Luke's shoulders and pulled him in for a kiss. "You are the fucking cutest son of a bitch I have ever met. I love you too."
-
"Ashton are you ready to go yet? We're already late!" Luke called from the car.
"Yeah yeah I'm coming!" Ashton yelled back. He grabbed the car keys and locked the house up behind him.
He slid into the drivers seat and started the car.
"Luke, please tell me you're not wearing those stupid socks again." Ashton said as he pulled onto the road.
Luke took off his shoe and showed Ashton his foot. "I am and I'm proud."
Ashton shook his head and smiled.
They drove in silence for a while, and when Ashton looked over, he saw Luke had fallen asleep.
Ashton pulled to a stop at a red light. He looked over at Luke fondly.
Luke was leaning against the window, his head in his hand. His mouth was slightly open, tiny snores escaping his lips. He had taken his socks off and they were laying beside the two of them.
Ashton saved the image to his head as he looked up to his rearview mirror.
His heart stopped when he saw a large truck barreling towards them, showing no signs of stopping.
In under a second, Ashton knew what was going to happen.
He cried out and reached out to Luke, feeling the soft fabric of Luke's sweatshirt brush against his fingertips, before the truck smashed into them, knocking them both forward.
Ashton's head rammed into the airbag that had suddenly deployed, but he had still felt a large jolt that shocked his spine.
There was a cracking sound as the windshield shattered as the car was shoved forward. It was knocked off the road and tumbled down a hill.
Ashton raised his arms uselessly to try and block his face as he and Luke were thrown around in the car.
Ashton cried out in fear as the car came to a shuddering halt, two feet away from the river.
He gasped for air as his heart pounded, making his breathing uneven.
The car had landed upside down, so Ashton was on his stomach, facing Luke on the floor of the car. Luke was on his back, his seatbelt had snapped during the crash.
"L-Luke!" Ashton blinked through the blood and tears and reached a shaky, bruised hand to his boyfriend.
"Luke! Please, oh my God, Luke!" Ashton cried out painfully, tenderly brushing Luke's bloodied hair out of his eyes. "Please wake up, please Luke! Don't leave me! Don't you dare leave me!" Ashton sobbed, struggling to get out of his seatbelt. "I love you too much for this to happen! Luke please!"
But Luke's eyes stayed closed, his body stayed motionless, his heart stayed still.
Ashton sobbed into the seat, twisting around desperately, trying to get free so he could get to his boyfriend.
His hand ran across something soft and fluffy. Ashton sniffed and picked up Luke's favorite socks.
"No...no, no, no, no, no! Luke! Luke please, please, please get up! Please! Luke! Please get up!"
"Sir! Sir! Are you okay? Stay still, the paramedics are coming." A man shouted through the shattered window, and Ashton heard sirens and people yelling.
"Please help me, m-my boyfriend, he's...he's not responding." Ashton pleaded, grabbing onto the strangers hand and gripping it tightly.
"Okay, okay, we'll help him. I need you to calm down sir. Can you tell me your name sir?"
"A-Ashton." Ashton cried, wiping his eyes with his free hand. "Please help him, I can't lose him!"
"It's okay." The man squeezed Ashton's hand. "Deep breaths."
More people came to Luke's window. A woman grabbed Luke's wrist and felt for a pulse.
She looked up to the man and shook her head slowly.
Ashton's grip on the man's hand tightened. "What did she do that for? Why did she do that? Is Luke okay? Is Luke okay?!" He shouted.
The man grabbed Ashton's chin and turned his head so Ashton looked at him instead of Luke. "Calm down, you need to calm down or you will go into shock."
But Ashton tore his head away and turned back to Luke.....just as Luke's body was covered by a tarp, and carefully moved out of the car.
"What?! What are they doing that for?! Why are they doing that?!" Ashton screamed into his hands, because deep down he knew exactly why they were doing that.
"Ashton! Please sir, we're going to remove the top part of the car, calm down and don't move!" The man shouted.
Ashton squeezed his eyes shut and sobbed into his hands as the paramedics removed the top half of the car, and carefully pulled Ashton out.
Ashton quickly turned around and grabbed onto the socks, the bloodied, ripped socks, as they lowered him onto a stretcher.
He felt himself being wheeled to an ambulance but he was numb. He looked around blankly. "Where's Luke? Where's my boyfriend? I want to see him!"
The man from earlier entered his vision. "I think it's best if you remember how you saw him before the crash."
Ashton pictured Luke sleeping in the car. "Okay, I'll remember him like this." He closed his eyes and a single tear ran down his cheek. "I'll remember him alive."
-
"How are their conditions?" A doctor shouted as he ran up to the ambulance that was just pulling to a halt in front of the hospital.
"Unstable! And the passenger died on impact." A nurse shouted back. They pulled the stretcher out and wheeled Ashton inside.
Ashton opened his eyes slowly. "What's going on?"
"How are you son?" A concerned voice asked.
Ashton squinted under the bright white lights. "Where's Luke? How is he?"
"Was the passenger Luke?" The doctor whispered to the nurse as the hurried the stretcher down the hall.
She nodded, both of them forgetting Ashton could still hear and see them.
"I'm sorry son, he didn't make it." The doctor gripped Ashton's shoulder. "How are you feeling?"
"Is this a dream?" Ashton whispered. "Cos I'm really not fine at all." He tightened his hand around the socks.
-
Ashton woke up in a small room the next day, disoriented and alone.
He struggled to sit up as a nurse entered the room.
"Morning dear! How are you feeling?" She hurried over to him.
Ashton just looked at her.
"These are for you, you dropped them during the surgery." She handed him a pair of bloody and torn socks.
Ashton took them and looked at them as they sat in his hand.
Slowly, painfully, he pulled them onto his feet.
He wiggled his toes and fell back against his pillow.
They were warm.
"And all of our important memories are in here, I was wearing these whenever we were together, I did everything in these socks."
And Ashton remembered.
"Ha! Look at this nerds green glasses!" Ashton turned and saw three large guys picking on a scrawny kid, who was wearing big, bright green glasses.
"Those are so fucking lame, can you even see out of those?" Another sneered, pushing the younger boy against a wall.
Ashton glared and abandoned his friends. He walked up to the bullies and shoved past them and helped the kid stand.
"I happen to like his glasses!" Ashton glared at the older guys while he helped the boy up.
They rolled their eyes. "Whatever." They left and the boy looked up at him with bright eyes and a smile.
"Thank you! I'm Luke by the way."
Ashton smiled. "I'm Ashton."
-
Ashton approached the boy nervously. "Uh, hi Luke." Luke smiled up at him. "Hi Ashton!"
"Hey. Um, I was wondering if you would, like, like to be my boyfriend or something." He pulled a bouquet of roses from behind his back. "These are for you, like, if you say yes. If not, you can just kill them or whatever." Ashton blushed and handed the roses over to a wide eyed Luke.
"Oh my God, yes!" Luke cried, jumping onto Ashton. "Yes, I would love to be your boyfriend Ashton!"
-
"Where are we going?" Luke giggled and reached his hands out, stumbling around blindly as Ashton covered his eyes.
"Wait and see!" Ashton laughed. "We're almost there!"
Ashton gave the man operating the machine two tickets and helped Luke onto the ride.
"Are we on a ride?!" Luke gasped and Ashton laughed and removed his hands.
"We are!" Luke squealed and turned around, trying to look at everything at once. "I love the Ferris Wheel!"
Ashton smiled and linked their hands as they stopped at the top of the wheel.
"I love you."
Luke smiled and they looked up at the starry night sky. "I love you too."
-
Luke was leaning against the window, his head in his hand. His mouth was slightly open, tiny snores escaping his lips.
Ashton sobbed and ripped the socks off.
He flipped over and buried his face into the pillow. "I'm really not fine at all. Tell me this is just a dream, please, cos I'm really not fine at all."
