Sightless Eyes

Dedicated to chillingwith5sos for the idea! :D and for helping me with the research!

Luke's boyfriend, Ashton, is blind. Ashton wants to play football (soccer) like Luke does, but their school doesn't allow blind people to play on the team.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

*Five Years Ago*

Luke was at the park when he noticed a boy, sitting by himself in the sand.

The boy was wearing sunglasses, which Luke found odd, since it was cloudy out.

After a while, curiosity got the better of him and he walked over to the boy.

He sat down in front of him and the boy tilted his head up, but Luke got a strange feeling the boy wasnt looking at him.

"Who's there?" The boy asked.

"Hi, I'm Luke." Luke said. "Why are you wearing sunglasses? The suns not out!"

"Because otherwise people will make fun of my eyes." The boy said softly, trailing his finger in the sand.

"Why?" Luke leaned forward, seeing only his reflection in the dark glasses.

"Because I'm blind." The boy said. "They think my eyes are funny looking."

Luke shuffled a little closer to the boy. "I bet your eyes are really pretty. Much prettier than anybody's!"

The boy looked back down at the shapes he was making.

"Whats your name?" Luke asked.

"Ashton."

"Why are you playing by yourself Ashton?" Luke asked softly.

"Because no one wants to play with the blind kid." Ashton said.

Luke smiled. "I'll play with you."

Ashton frowned. "You dont have to. You can just leave and play with the other kids, I'm used to being alone."

Luke frowned too. "But I dont want to play with the other kids. I wanna play with you. Do you wanna play with me Ashton?"

After a moment of silence, Ashton smiled. "I'd like to play with you Luke. Very much."

Luke beamed. "Great!" He stood up and waited for Ashton to stand up too. Ashton reached out and Luke waited for him to grab his arm.

When he did, Luke led him around the playground.

"Wanna play on the swings?" Luke asked and Ashton nodded. Luke guided him over to the swingset.

"Here, I'll push you!" Luke helped Ashton sit on the swing, and went to stand behind him.

He started slowly at first, so Ashton got the hang of it, then pushed the swing faster and faster, until Ashton was laughing and smiling.

Luke smiled too. He liked Ashton's laugh.

After a while, it got dark and Luke stopped the swing.

"Thanks for playing with me Luke." Ashton said softly, climbing off.

"Ashton." Luke grabbed Ashton's arm and the boy stiffened. "Sorry." Luke let go. "I was just wondering, can I see your eyes? Please, I really want to see them."

Ashton sighed. "Promise you wont laugh? I dont like it when the people laugh."

"I promise." Luke swore. "I will never laugh at you Ashton."

"Then go ahead." Ashton whispered.

Luke caught his breath and reached up, slowly taking off the sunglasses.

"Oh Ashton." Luke breathed and Ashton burst out crying.

"I'm sorry Luke! Please dont laugh at me!" He struggled to put the glasses back on but Luke grabbed his hands gently.

"No, please don't cover them back up!" Luke pleaded. "They're so beautiful, I never want to stop looking at them."

Ashton sniffed and stared past him. "What color are they?"

Luke leaned in closer. "I can't tell...hazel?  Green? Maybe brown. Doesnt matter, they are perfect to me."

"Really?" Ashton asked in a whisper. "You really think my ugly eyes are perfect?"

Luke smiled. "I think your beautiful eyes are stunning." Ashton smiled at the ground.

"Can I walk you home Ashton?" Luke asked. Ashton nodded and grabbed his arm again.

Luke held Ashton's sunglasses while they followed the sidewalk home.

"My mom said to just follow the sidewalk until I hear cars. Thats the road. I turn left at the road and follow the sidewalk ten steps. My house is right there." Ashton explained.

"Then you lead me." Luke smiled, taking Ashton's hand instead and letting the blind boy walk in front of him.

"Oh...okay." Ashton said, and carefully started walking down the sidewalk, counting to ten softly.

"Hey Luke?" Ashton asked.

"Yeah?"

"What color are your eyes?"

"Blue."

"Blue like the sky or blue like the ocean?"

Luke thought. "Oh...I don't know. What do you like better, the sky or the ocean?"

Ashton thought too. "Um, the ocean I guess."

"Then they are blue like the ocean." Luke smiled.

Ashton stopped suddenly. "We're here." He turned to face Luke, blushing secretly in the dark. "Um, do you want to come in?"

"Sure!"

Ashton led him inside, where his mom was instantly all over him.

"Ashton! There you are! We were so worried, you were late! You weren't wearing headphones right? You know you can't hear the road if you wear those."

Ashton struggled out of her hug. "It's okay mom, I was just playing with Luke, he walked me home."

Luke waved and she smiled at him. "Thank you, you're welcome over anytime you want."

Luke smiled, and since then, Ashton and Luke became inseperable.

*Present Day*

Ashton held his hand out after class and waited for Luke to take it. Luke smiled up at Ashton and gave him a kiss on the cheek, taking his boyfriends hand.

Ashton jumped at the kiss. "Luke!" He laughed as Luke led him to his locker. "You scared me!"

"Aw I'm sorry boo." Luke laughed and opened Ashton's locker for him. "Hey, I have football practice today, so you can walk yourself home right? I'll come by after practice and we can hang out."

Ashton reached for his backpack and Luke handed it to him. "I've walked myself home before you know, I'm not helpless."

"I know you're not, but I still want you to be safe." Luke said, smiling and leaning in to press a soft kiss to Ashton's forehead. "I love you."

Ashton smiled and reached his hand up to feel Luke's face. He found a piece of hair and brushed it back. "I know, I love you too. I'll see you later."

"Whoa, hold on there mister." Luke grabbed Ashton's shirt and yanked him back. He reached into Ashton's backpack and pulled out a pair of headphones. He held them up and raised an eyebrow. "What are you doing with these?"

"I don't know what you're talking about." Ashton said, smiling. Luke sighed. "Why are these headphones in your backpack? You know you're not supposed to have them."

Ashton sighed. "Mikey gave them to me. I just wanted to listen to music during lunch. Is that so bad?"

Luke frowned. "No...I'm sorry. I'll give them back, but promise to listen to these only when you're safe at home okay?"

Ashton smiled and held his hand up. Luke placed the headphones in his hand. "I promise. Bye Luke."

"Bye babe." Luke made sure Ashton was safely out the schools doors before running down the hall to the gym, where the football team was already changing.

"Luke! There you are mate, what kept ya?" Mikey asked, throwing Luke's football shirt at him.

"You." Luke replied, pulling off his shirt and changing. "You gave headphones to Ashton again."

Mikey frowned. "He just wanted to listen to music, I felt bad for him."

Luke faced him angrily. "Don't ever feel sorry for him! He can handle himself and doesn't need your pity!"

"It's not pity! I totally respect him!" Mikey said. "Calm down, I promise I won't give him headhones again." Luke sighed. "I'm sorry, I just worry about him all the time."

"We know." Calum rolled his eyes as he walked up to him. "Now c'mon, coach is already mad at you for being late yesterday too."

-

After practice, Luke changed quickly and grabbed his backpack, running outside. He ran all the way to Ashton's and knocked on the door breathlessly.

Ashton's voice drifted through the door. "You're all sweaty, go away."

Luke laughed and pounded on the door. "Open up so I can kiss you."

"No way man, I can smell you through the door." Ashton laughed.

Luke opened the door anyways and Ashton gasped, covering his face. Luke walked up him, a frown on his face as he grabbed Ashton's hands and removed them from his face. "Ash...were you crying?"

"No...can you hand me my sunglasses?"

Luke led Ashton to Ashton's room and sat him on the bed. "Ashton, you haven't worn those since the day I met you. What's going on? You know you can tell me anything."

Ashton sighed deeply and wiped his face with his long sleeves. "I know, I know, it's just...nevermind. It's really stupid."

Luke frowned and crouched down in front of the blind boy. He placed his hands on Ashton's cheeks and wiped the tear tracks away with his thumbs. "It's not stupid if it's making you cry. What is it? Tell me so I can help."

Ashton sniffed and pulled Luke back onto the bed. He laid down and Luke cuddled him close.

"I wasn't blind all my life you know." Ashton whispered a few moments later.

"I know." Luke said as he pressed kisses to Ashton's hair.

"When I was younger, I was in football. I loved it, I even thought I was pretty good. But then, you know." Ashton took a deep, shuddering breath. "They don't let blind people play on the team. I had to quit because I could no longer see."

Luke stopped kissing him. "You miss playing football, don't you?" Ashton nodded and wiped his eyes again.

"And here I was, bragging about it all the time." Luke said flatly.

"Don't do that." Ashton rolled over and placed his hands on Luke's face, feeling the familiar skin. "I liked hearing about your practices and games."

"You know what," Luke said suddenly, "I'm going to make it up to you. I'm gunna get you on the team."

Ashton sighed and pinched Luke's cheek. "You don't have to make it up to me, you haven't done anything. Can we please just let it go?"

Luke shook his head. "Nope. First thing tomorrow, I'm going to talk to the coach about letting you join."

"He won't let me. I'm blind Luke."

"Blind and good! Ashton, if you want this, you gotta believe in yourself! I can't do this alone. I can get Calum and Mikey to help, but if you want to play on the team, you have to want it. Like really, really want it."

Ashton buried his face into Luke's chest and smiled. "Okay. Okay Luke. I believe. Thank you."

Luke smiled and hugged Ashton tightly. "Just wait Ashton, you'll be on the team before you know it!"

-

"Come in."

Luke opened the blue door that led to the gym offices and walk inside.

"Coach Davis?"

"In here son." Luke walked to the back of the room where his coach was filling basketballs with air.

"How can I help you, Luke?" He stopped working and smiled.

Luke took a deep breath. "It's my boyfriend,  Ashton. You see, he really wants to play on the team, and he's really good-"

Coach Davis held up a hand. "Ashton Irwin? The blind boy?"

Luke gritted his teeth. "Yes. The blind boy."

The coach shook his head. "Im sorry Luke, I bet he really is good, but our school isn't equipped with the right things to allow a blind person in the team."

Luke frowned. "But-"

"Sorry Luke."

Luke sighed. "Cant you just give him a chance? Please? Let him try out, and if he doesn't make it then he doesn't make it."

"But what if he does make it?"

"What do you mean?"

"What if he does make the team? How can he play against all the other teams if he can't see the ball?" The coach asked.

"Uh....cross that bridge when we come to it?" Luke bit his lip nervously.

Davis sighed. "Alright son, bring him to the field tomorrow after school and I'll try him out. If he doesn't make it-"

"Yeah yeah, thanks coach!" Luke waved as he ran down the halls. "You won't regret this!"

-

"What if I mess up? What if everyone sees me kick the ball into the other teams net? What if I die? What if-" Luke grabbed Ashton's cheeks and squeezed them, making Ashton stop talking.

"Babe, you'll be fine. Me and the coach will be the only ones watching you, well besides Calum and Mikey, because you're playing against Calum and Mikey is there for emotional support and-" Ashton felt Lukes face and pinched his cheeks. He smiled. "Alright, I get it."

Luke smiled and held his hand, leading him out into the field.

"Did you bring the bell?" Coach Davis asked as they walked up to him.

"What bell?" Luke asked. Ashton reached into his pocket and felt around. Luke heard a jingle as Ashton pulled out a small bell. He handed it to the coach and the coach clipped it onto the ball.

"What was that for?" Luke asked.

"Thats how blind people can tell where the ball is." The coach explained.

"Oh." Luke gave Ashton one last hug, before taking a seat next to Michael on the bleachers.

"Good luck!" Mikey called out.

The coach blew the whistle and the game began.

"Of course he has to play against Calum, the best player on the team." Luke sighed.

"Hey, if he can beat Calum, he can beat anybody." Mikey smiled.

Luke watched as Ashton kicked the ball, sending it across the field. Calum blocked it from going in his goal and sent it back.

Everyone stayed as silent as possible so Ashton could hear the bell.

Ashton turned his face to the sound, and kicked the ball back. Calum ran back to his goal, but Ashton had already scored.

Luke and Mikey jumped up and cheered.

Calum congratulated Ashton and the coach blew the whistle, starting the game again.

Nearly an hour later, the score was 5-4, with Ashton winning.

The coach blew the whistle again and ended the game.

"I've seen enough."

Luke ran down the bleachers and hugged his sweaty boyfriend. "Ashton you were amazing! You beat Calum! Calum!"

Ashton smiled and felt for Luke's face. He trailed his fingers across Luke's cheek. "Thanks. For everything."

Luke hugged him. "I love you."

Mikey ran up and tackled Ashton, startling the blind boy. "ASHTON, YOU KICKED ASS!"

"Mikey!" Luke whined. "You ruined the moment!"

"Sorry." Michael giggled from the ground, still holding Ashton tight. "You gotta admit he kicked ass though."

"Clifford." Coach Davis said sternly, walking up with Calum. "No swearing on school grounds."

"Sorry." Mikey said, helping Ashton up.

"Ashton," Davis put a hand on Ashtons shoulder. "You really did kick ass."

Ashton blushed and giggled. "Thanks."

"So is he on the team?" Luke asked eagerly.

Davis turned to Calum. "What do you think?"

Calum smiled and nodded. "He earned it."

Davis smiled. "Then it's settled. Welcome to the team Ashton! Practice is tomorrow. Our first game is on Friday."

Ashton nodded quickly. "Okay, I'll be there, thank you so much!"

Luke brought Ashton home after that and they celebrated with sparkling cider and kisses.

-

The next day at practice, Ashton stood in front of the team with the coach, as Davis introduced the newest member.

"What's wrong with his eyes?" Jake asked another team member. Luke glared. "He's blind you inconsiderate assholes!"

"Boys, listen up. This is Ashton Irwin, and he joined our team yesterday. I expect you to treat him with respect and kindness. If I hear one negative comment about him, I will not hesitate to kick you off the team. Now lets play football."

Ashton smiled and waited for Luke to show him to his locker.

"Here baby." Luke guided him. "Are you ready for Friday?"

Ashton shrugged. "I'm nervous, but yeah."

Luke smiled as he opened Ashtons locker. "You'll be great, I just know it."

Practice was a struggle at first, as the team adjusted to Ashton, but then they recognized his talent, and even made a game where they passed the ball to Ashton every time.

Ashton was beaming when practice was over. "Luke that was amazing!"

Luke smiled. "You were amazing. I'm so proud of you."

"I can't believe this." Luke turned and saw two of his team mates, Jake and Malcolm. "How are we supposed to win Fridays game with a blind person on our team?"

Ashton froze.

"I know right, we'll just tell everyone to ignore him. Maybe if he doesn't get the ball, we will have a chance." Malcolm said.

Luke glared and started storming up to them but Ashton caught his shoulder. "Let it slide Luke, it's okay. It's a whole new experience for them."

Luke stomped his foot. "But it's a new experience for you too!"

Ashton smiled. "I'll be fine Luke, let's just go home and practice for tomorrows game. Please?"

Luke casted a look after the rude teammates. "Fine. But I'm not forgetting this."

-

Luke knocked on Ashtons door. "You ready Ash? Big game today!"

The door opened and Ashton held out his hand. Luke took it and led the way to the school.

"I don't feel good." Ashton said, holding his stomach.

"It's just nerves." Luke assured. "You'll be great."

Ashton bit his lip. "You have too much faith in me. Just because I was good at practice doesn't mean I'll be good in a game. Im scared to let the team, Davis, Calum and Mikey and especially you, down."

Luke stopped and kissed Ashton suddenly. "Stop talking bull shit."

Ashton smiled. "'Kay."

They went to the locker rooms and changed quickly.

They met Michael and Calum on the field.

"Hey Ash, good luck today." Mikey smiled.

"Yeah, Coach put a new bell on the ball, too." Calum said.

Ashton nodded, and Luke noticed he was shaking. He wrapped his arms around the boy. "You'll do great." He kissed his cheek softly. "I love you, no matter what."

"L-love you too." Ashton stuttered.

A few minutes after the rival team arrived, the game began.

Calum and the other teams player took their places as goalie and Davis threw the ball onto the field.

Instantly, both teams ran at it.

The crowd was screaming and cheering and it made Luke's adrenaline rush. He stole the ball from the rival team and kicked it to Mikey.

Michael kicked it back and Ashton ran up to it. He kicked it hard, sending it flying into the other teams net.

The crowd clapped and cheered and Ashton smiled shyly.

"Go Ashton!" Luke screamed.

The two rude team mates rolled their eyes.

After a while, it was tied, 7-7, with a minute left on the clock.

Luke was running down the field with the ball, with Ashton on one side of him and Jake on the other.

"Pass it!" Jake shouted. Luke glared at him and passed it to Ashton instead.

Ashton missed it however, and the other team scored.

"I'm sorry Luke!" Ashton cried. "It's too loud, I can't hear the ball!"

Luke thought quickly. They only had thirty seconds to score.

"Go for the ball Ashton, Mikey has it currently. Hes in the middle of the field."

"But Luke, I can't hear!"

"I have a plan Ash, just trust me okay?" Luke called as he ran to Davis.

He grabbed the coaches megaphone, ignoring Davis's protest.

"Everyone shut up!" He screamed into it. "You have to be quiet! My boyfriend is blind and the only way he can see the ball is by hearing it."

The crowd started falling silent.

"He can't hear it because you guys are being too loud, so please, shut up for the next fifteen seconds!"

The crowd held their breath.

A jingle rang out as Ashton stole everyone's surprise as an opportunity to take the ball from Mikey.

Both teams snapped into action and started chasing after Ashton, but the blind boy had a head start.

"Ashton, shoot!" Luke yelled, glancing at the timer.

Five seconds left.

Ashton stopped and kicked the ball as hard as he could.

Everyone watched as it soared through the air, brushing against the other teams goalies fingertips and landed in the net.

The buzzer went off.

Luke screamed happily, running to his boyfriend.

He grabbed Ashton and they fell to the ground. Michael cheered and jumped on top of them. Calum and the rest of the team ran up and created a giant dog pile, while the opposing team sulked and left to their busses.

"Ashton, Ashton, Ashton!" The team cheered and Ashton blushed furiously.

Luke pulled Ashton in for a kiss.

"I'm so proud of you baby." He murmured.

Ashton smiled. "I love you."

"I love you too."
