Lost memories

This was requested by WhoWouldntLoveHim28 I hope it's okay (:

3rd person P.O.V

Louis' leg was bouncing as he waited nervously in the hospital chair, he had been here for a few days already. Harry had an accident at work and hit his head badly, he was immediately knocked unconscious and an ambulance was called.

Louis can still remember the feeling he got when Anne called him saying that Harry was hurt, he immediately left work and rushed to the hospital. The doctors had already done an MRI and a CT scan by the time Louis got there.

They said that there was no obvious damage to Harry's brain or skull and there was no internal bleeding, but he was in a coma and they didn't know when or even if he will wake up.

If.

That word felt like it had stabbed Louis when he heard it. He was crying as he yelled at the doctors asking what they meant by 'if' because he had to wake up, Louis needed him.

He was going to propose to Harry in around a week but then he had the accident and he's been at the hospital since, Louis hadn't gone home and he's been in the same clothes for almost a week. He couldn't leave. He needed to be here when Harry woke up.

When. Not if.

"Hello, Louis." The doctors gruff voice filled the room as he walked inside, Louis just looked up and tried to smile but it probably looked more like a grimace.

"I'm just coming to check his vitals and that everything is okay." Dr Shepherd said as he walked over to the hospital bed Harry was laying, almost lifeless, in.

Louis just nodded and put his head back into his hands, his hair was greasy and he was sure he smelled bad but he couldn't go home, he needed to be here with Harry.

The doctor was done in a few minutes but before he walked out the room he walked up to Louis. "Louis, there is something I think I should let you know." He started and Louis picked his head up, already worried. "Im not the type of doctor to sugarcoat things so... if Harry wakes up there is a high chance that he's lost some of his memory. The accident took a bad hit to his head, and it is normal for head trauma patients to lose memory temporarily. I just wanted to let you know."

"Wait so, when he wakes up he might not even remember me?" Louis asked with tears in his eyes.

"There is a high chance, yes." Dr shepherd nodded. "But most cases are temporary and the patients regain full memory after a few days or weeks."

"You said most cases."

"Yes. Most cases. There is a chance that Harry's memories will not return but we will speak more about this if he wakes up and has lost memories." Dr shepherd said before heading to the door.

"When." Louis whispered as he sat back down in the chair he pulled over to Harry's hospital bed. "Please remember me." He whispered even quieter, he had tears rolling down his cheeks and his voice was gravely. "If you forget who I am, I don't know what i'd do." He gently grabbed Harry's hand and held it in his. "I need you to wake up, H. Please. Wake up." He brought Harry's hand to his mouth and kissed it, the salty taste of his tears in his mouth.

Five hours later one of the nurses walked into Harry's room, her name was Elizabeth and she had been bringing food for Louis to eat as he hadn't gone home. "Here you go Louis. Cafeteria food." She chuckled lightly as she handed him a sandwich and a drink before sitting down next to him. "How are you holding up?"

Louis just shrugged as he placed the food down onto the small corner table next to him. "Dr shepherd said he might not remember some things."

"I know, he told me." She sighed and moved her chair closer to him. "But there's a chance he will remember after time."

"There's so much chance here, there's a chance he might wake up, there's a chance he might have lost memory of me, there's a chance that he might never remember. Why can't something be certain?" Louis mumbled as he dropped his head down and looked at the floor, one of his hands were still holding Harry's.

Elizabeth didn't say anything she just placed a hand on Louis' back and gently rubbed up and down. "Y'know you can go home for a couple hours, have a shower, eat some real food, sleep for a bit. Harry will be okay, I'll make sure of it." She said with a quiet voice but Louis shook his head and looked up at her.

"No, I can't. I need to stay here."

"Louis..."

"I know he probably won't wake up while I'm gone but I- I just can't. I can't leave." Louis' voice cracked slightly as he tightened his hold on Harry's hand, almost as if Harry was his lifeline.

"Okay. Call if you need anything." Elizabeth stood up and with one more sad smile in Louis' direction she left the room.

"I'm not leaving you." Louis whispered as he moved closer to Harry. "I told you I would never leave you. So I'm not going anywhere." He brought his hand up to Harry's hair and gently moved stray strands off his forehead. "I love you so much, just please come back to me. Please wake up."

He knew Harry wouldn't wake up just because he asked him to but he's running out of options, he's been in a coma for almost six days and he has made no signs of waking up anytime soon.

After another hour Louis stepped outside Harry's room for a couple minutes, sometimes it can get too much just staring at his boyfriend on a hospital bed, not moving and having to listen to the beeping of the machines keeping him alive.

He was about to go back inside when he heard his mother's voice. "Louis?" She walked closer and placed a hand on her sons shoulder. "How are you?"

Louis almost laughed.

"Me? How am I?" He stepped back slightly as he ran a hand through his hair. "What about Harry? He's been here for five days, he's hurt, he's in a coma. I'm not the one you should be worried about. I'm not the one in a coma. I know who I'm worried about and it's certainly not me!"

"Louis, love, you should go home. Get some rest. Harry will be f-"

"Why is everyone telling me to go home?!" He yelled, tears in his eyes. "The one I love most, is in there hooked up to machines that are keeping him alive, and you want me to go home?!" He shook his head as more tears fell down his cheeks, his eyes were sore from how much he'd cried recently, he felt like he would never stop. "Everyone keeps telling me that he could not wake up, and you want me to go home and waste time by having a fucking shower or something?! If he isn't going to wake up I want to spend every second I have left with him! I'm not going to leave him! I will be with him for as long as I can, so if you excuse me, I need to go back to him. I've already been away long enough." Louis sighed and turned away from his mum.

"Louis-"

"Don't. Just don't." He mumbled before walking back into Harry's room, closing the door behind him. He wiped the tears off his cheeks and walked back over to the chair he'd become quite accustomed to the last five days.

He sat down and immediately took Harry's hand back in his, before bringing it up to his lips and kissing it gently. "I'm sorry I was gone long." He whispered hoping Harry could hear him. "I'm not going anywhere."

~

The next day Louis woke up to clashing sounds and beeping, he panicked and jumped up from where he was slouched against the chair.

Luckily nothing was wrong it was just Dr shepherd checking Harry's vitals again. Louis let out a deep breath and rubbed the back of his neck, it really hurt from how he'd been sleeping recently but he wasn't going to leave Harry just so he could sleep in a bed.

"Sorry, Louis. Didn't mean to wake you." Dr Shepherd apologised and placed Harry's clipboard back onto the end of the bed.

"It's fine, I should be awake anyway." Louis said as he rubbed his hand over his face and stretched his body slightly.

"Is that from yesterday?" Dr shepherd pointed to the sandwich Louis never ate yesterday.

"Yeah."

"I can ask Elizabeth to bring you something now, if you need it?"

"No, it's okay, she'll bring something later."

Dr shepherd nodded but sighed as he walked over to Louis. "Louis we need to talk, you might want to take a seat."

"Is everything okay?" Louis asked worriedly as he reluctantly sat down and Dr shepherd sat down next to him.

"Harry's been here for six days, no change at all, there is no sign of him reacting to anything we're using trying to get him to wake up."

"W-what are you saying?"

"I'm saying that your chances of Harry waking up are getting slimmer, his brain is functioning but very low. Almost not at all. The life support is keeping him alive." Dr shepherd stood up as he grabbed his folder. "We're trying everything we can to keep him alive, but ultimately if Harry doesn't try to wake up anytime soon then we're getting into dangerous waters and the chance of him waking up will only get smaller."

"So he's going to die." Louis whispered as he looked over at his boyfriend. He looked so peaceful. He wonders where he is in his head.

"Not necessarily. But that doesn't mean that it won't happen."

Louis just nodded as he continued to look at Harry, Dr shepherd sighed as he stood up and walked out of the room.

"You gotta wake up, H." Louis leaned back over to him. "They all think you're not. I need you to wake up."

He took his hand again and pressed gentle kisses to it. "I was going to propose to you in two days. It was going to be perfect, all the boys were in on it too. Well kind of, I told them about it, they were going to distract you for the day while Zayn helped me set up." Louis took a deep breath as some of his tears fell onto the back of Harry's cold hand. "I was gonna do it where we first met. Five years ago. I was drunk and wandering along the beach, you were trying to take pictures of the ocean and the sunset but I kept getting in the way. You asked me to move but I was drunk and you know I'm a stupid drunk. Anyway you ended up realising I wasn't sober and offered to take me home. You found out where I lived by finding my keys in my pocket and you took me home, you unlocked my apartment and safely helped me to my bed, then I knocked out as soon as I hit the pillow. When I woke up, I had a killer headache and was in my bed, a blanket thrown across my body. You left pills and a drink on my beside cabinet with a note and it had your number. You told me to text you when I woke up so you knew I was okay. And it was only when I saw your name at the bottom of the paper that I remembered what happened." Louis chuckled slightly as he wiped his eyes. "After that we just kept talking, I took you on a date, and another and another before I finally asked you to be my boyfriend, you obviously said yes and then two years later you moved into my apartment. But then we both moved out and into our apartment. Then you really wanted a cat. I said no for at least a year then I surprised you on our anniversary with a kitten even though I said I would hate her. I didn't. We called her Bambi because she was a little wobbly at first. Then I fell in love with her because she reminded me of you, so cuddly and affectionate. But I would never admit to you that I loved her. Well I guess I am now, not really though."

Louis sighed and kept talking. "Anyway enough about our cat, who I had to get Gemma to feed at the moment, I hope she's giving her enough kisses from us both. But the proposal, I was going to have a whole walkway through the sand lit up with lights and flowers on the ground, it would be sunset, and I would be stood in the exact place you were trying to take your pictures five years ago. I'd be in a ring of sunflowers because they're your favourite and you would walk up to me and I would say some long speech that would probably make you cry, and then hopefully you'd say yes and I'd place the ring on your finger. Then we would take pictures, in the same place you tried to until a drunk guy came and photobombed them. I hoped you would've liked it. I've been wanting to do it for a while, now I wish I did it sooner. I love you so much, Haz. Please wake up. I can't lose you." Louis whispered the last part as he laid his head against the hospital bed, still holding one of Harry's hands.

~

Harry had now been in a coma for a week, and Louis was only getting more and more worried, he barely ever left Harry's side, even just to get a drink or go to the toilet.

Elizabeth was getting worried about Louis' health as well as Harry's as she realised he was leaving more food than he was eating, so she started staying in the room while they talked so she could make sure he ate enough.

Louis was awake and once again holding Harry's hand in his, there was something calming, comforting about holding his hand. It reminded him that he was still there, that he was still with him. There was a chance.

"Hello, Louis." Dr shepherd said as he walked into the room and over to Harry's chart.

"What bad news are you going to tell me today?" Louis mumbled as he rubbed his free hand over his face. "Sorry, I know you're doing your job. I'm just- tired."

"Don't worry about it, Louis. I know you're going through a difficult time." Dr shepherd said as he opened Harry's eyes and shone the small torch.

He checked Harry for a few more minutes before writing something on the clipboard then he hung it on the end of the bed. "Okay, there's been a change."

"A bad one?" Louis asked as he stood up, letting go of Harry's hand.

"No. He's starting to respond, not much at all. But it's there." Dr shepherd smiled as he picked up a folder of files.

"Really?" Louis breathed out, he was happy and shocked at the same time, this meant Harry could wake up.

"Yes, but still remember that it's not a lot."

Louis nodded and he smiled for the first time in a while as Dr shepherd left the room. He picked up his phone and called Gemma and Anne to tell them that he's started responding, even if it's small.

After a couple hours or so, Anne came to see Harry and Louis and just check in, she came three days ago but she didn't stay long as she hated seeing Harry in the hospital bed, looking lifeless.

"Louis, sweetheart?" Louis heard Anne's voice before he saw her.

"Hi." Louis smiled lightly at her as he stood up and walked over to her before she pulled him into a hug.

"You look pale, dear, have you even been outside since he got here?" She asked once they pulled apart and Louis shook his head. "You really do love him."

"I do." Louis whispered as he looked behind him at Harry. "I really do."

"Just remember to take care of yourself too, it's no good if when Harry wakes up you're in need of medical attention. Even though I'm sure you'll refuse it, I've known you for five years and you've always been stubborn but you have a big heart." Anne sat down in one of the chairs as she looked at her son with sad eyes.

"How's he doing?" She asked, her voice small.

"Well I don't think anything's changed since when Dr shepherd checked him this morning." Louis said as he sat down.

Anne nodded and grabbed Harry's hand before turning to look at Louis. "Jay told me you were ignoring her calls."

"I wasn't really ignoring them I was just- not going into answer them." Louis mumbled as he shrugged.

"She told me what happened, she's just worried about you, Louis. I can't blame her either."

"I know but she should be worried about Harry not me."

"And she is, but you're her son, and seeing you like this is hard for her. We can see the pain you're feeling, Louis, and she's just trying to make sure you're okay." Anne spoke softly as Louis looked down.

"I'm not going home."

"I know sweetheart. I know." Anne sighed. "But just call her."

Louis nodded and stood up, he looked back at Harry before reluctantly walking out of the room with his phone in his hand. He left Anne with Harry while he called his mum.

They spoke for a couple minutes and she apologised for possibly seeming like she didn't care about Harry, and that she was just worried. Louis told her not to worry but that he wouldn't go home unless Harry was coming with him.

They spoke for a few more minutes before Louis said he wanted to go back to Harry, he said goodbye and hung up before walking back into the room.

Louis sat back down next to Anne and the two talked for another hour or so about anything they could think of.

"I'm going to grab a drink from the cafeteria, do you want anything?" Anne asked and Louis shook his head.

"No thank you." He half-smiled at her as she nodded and walked out the room.

Louis sighed as he turned back to look at Harry, he stood up to stretch his legs as he walked around the room, it was only when he heard something that he turned around.

Harry was moving.

And his eyes were fluttering open, slowly but surely they were opening. Louis was stood in shock in front of Harry's bed as tears formed in his eyes. He was waking up.

After a couple of seconds Harry's eyes opened and Louis saw the beautiful green he had missed so much. "Harry?" His voice cracked as he watched his boyfriend look around the room with a anxious expression.

Harry's eyes caught sight of Louis, and he opened his mouth to speak. "Who are you?" His voice was croaky but it still made Louis' heart stop.

"M'Louis." He said with a quiet voice, more tears filling his eyes, Harry couldn't have forgotten him, he couldn't. "I'm your- boyfriend."

Harry shook his head slowly. "I don't know who you are, I don't have a boyfriend."

Air got trapped in Louis' throat as he stepped back slightly, one of his hands was over his mouth as tears fell down his cheeks.

He left the room to go find the doctor and as he left he saw Anne. "Louis what's wrong?" She asked quickly.

"Harry- he's awake." Louis breathed out as Anne smiled. And immediately went into the room as Louis saw Dr shepherd who was coming his way. "Harry's awake." Louis said once he was close enough, he didn't miss the way Dr shepherd looked shocked as he stilled for a minute.

But he quickly regained composure and quickly walked into Harry's room. Anne was holding Harry's hand as she cried and he looked confused as he looked around.

"Hello, Harry, I'm Dr Shepherd." Dr shepherd said as Louis walked back into the room but stayed in the corner. "A week ago you had an accident and hit your head pretty badly, you've been in a coma since, I have some questions to ask you if that's okay?"

Harry nodded as he held Anne's hand back and Dr shepherd continued. "Can you tell me your name?"

"Harry Styles." He croaked out.

"Good." Dr shepherd smiled and looked at Anne. "Do you know who this is?"

"My mum."

"Lovely, can you tell me what day it is?"

Harry paused as he looked down and slowly shook his head.

"That's okay." Dr shepherd said in a soft voice before turning to look at Louis who was still in the corner of the room. "Do you know who this is?" He pointed to Louis who bit his lip and looked down.

"He said his name was Louis." Harry croaked as Anne stilled for a minute and pulled away from Harry to look at Louis who was trying to hold back tears.

"That's right, but do you know him?" Dr shepherd asked knowing that Louis was Harry's boyfriend and had been for some time now.

"No." Harry whispered as Anne tried to hide her stunned face.

Louis didn't know if his heart could break anymore, it felt like it was already in tiny pieces. The love of his life had no idea who he was, he couldn't remember him, he couldn't remember their life together.

"Thats okay, Harry." Dr shepherd said once he saw Harry frown slightly as if he was trying to remember. "Harry can you tell me how old you are?"

"Twenty one." Harry said confidently and Anne and Louis both tried to hold back more tears as they knew Harry had celebrated his twenty sixth birthday a month ago with family and friends.

Dr shepherd nodded. "Okay Harry, I need to do some tests to make sure you're okay but first I want to speak to your mum, so I'll be back in a minute to talk to you, okay?"

Harry nodded and Anne followed Dr shepherd out the room and Louis was already waiting in the hallway. "So, it looks like Harry has lost around five years worth of his memory, but it could be temporary. It's normal for someone to have had a head injury and then temporarily forget memories but they should come back."

"Will he remember?" Louis asked in a whisper.

"He should. But how long that will take, I'm not sure." Dr shepherd said as Anne and Harry nodded. "Anyone he met or anything he did in the last five years he cannot remember and he's probably very stressed, I want to keep him here over night to make sure he's okay and then tomorrow he can go home if everything's fine."

"But he doesn't remember me." Louis said as Anne placed a hand on his back. "He's not gonna remember where he lived with me."

"Thats why he should go home, some patients can benefit from being in a place that holds memories even if they don't remember them, it could help."

"What if it's overwhelming for him, I mean there's pictures of things that he can't remember happening." Louis asked as he fiddled with his fingers.

"It could be, which is probably best if you have a room that he could sleep in thats not with you so it's not too overwhelming to start with, but he could start to remember little pieces of things if he sees them. Like pictures, animals, and people. You have to remember to be patient with him and not push him if he can't remember, it will take as much time as it does for him to remember." He looked away from Louis and over to Anne. "It would help if you went over to see him daily just so he has something familiar with him and you could help with getting his memories back because he will trust you and what you say."

Anne nodded as she continued to rub Louis' back soothingly.

Dr shepherd walked back into Harry's room first and started doing other tests before saying everything looked fine and if his memories return he should be fully recovered physically.

"Harry there is something I need to tell you." Dr shepherd started as Anne sat back down next to Harry's bed and Louis stayed by the door, not wanting to make Harry feel uncomfortable. "When you hit your head, you lost memory of some things. I asked your age earlier and you said you were 21, but that was how old you were five years ago."

"I'm 26?" Harry asked confused.

"Yes, you can't remember the last five years of your life." Dr shepherd continued. "Most cases are temporary and that over time your memory will come back fully, it may take time so don't get annoyed if something seems familiar but you can't remember. But that's why you really need to get back to normal life to try and help jog your memory. Is that okay?"

Harry nodded as he looked down at his hands and was silent for a few minutes before looking up with teary eyes. "So I don't remember the last five years? Nothing?"

"No."

"Oh." Harry looked up and met Louis' eyes. "Did I meet you in the last five years?"

Louis swallowed and nodded as more tears filled his eyes.

"What's your full name? I wanna remember." Harry said as he wiped his cheeks.

"You should relax, wait until tomorrow." Louis whispered as a lumped formed in his throat.

"No, I wanna do it now. I wanna know who you are." He said determined as Dr shepherd left the room to give them privacy. "My mum said you were here all week and you never left, so you had to be important to me. Were you?"

Louis tried to stop the quiet sob he let out as he nodded. "Yeah. Well at l-least you were important to me. But I think I was important to you."

"So what's your full name?"

"L-Louis Tomlinson."

Harry looked at Louis for a couple minutes, his eyes scanning his body until he shook his head and looked down. "Why can't I remember?" He breathed out, clearly annoyed.

"Harry, love, it's fine." Anne said soothingly as she rubbed his back.

"Anne, I'm gonna err.. Im gonna go hom- back to the apartment." Louis said as he headed for the door and walked out but Anne followed after him.

"Aren't you going to stay tonight? You've been here all week." She asked as he shook his head and bit his bottom lip so he wouldn't cry.

"Yeah, I think it's err for the best, I mean he doesn't remember m-me so it's umm probably good if I g-go home tonight." Louis stuttered as tears clouded his vision. "A bed m-might do me good anyway."

"Okay, as long as you're sure."

"Yeah. Oh and err you should be the one to pick him
up tomorrow." Louis said as he rubbed the back of his neck. "You can bring him to m-mine anytime, err I just think it's good for him if someone he knows picks him up and I need to do some stuff before he gets back."

"Louis..."

"I'm tired. I'll see you tomorrow." He tried to smile but it looked more pained than happy before turning around and walking towards the exit.

Tears rolled freely down his cheeks as his breathing became sharp and quick, he placed a hand over his mouth as he let out a small sob. He walked out the main entrance of the hospital and walked into the pouring rain, but he didn't make it to his car before he broke down and dropped to the floor with his head in his hands. He couldn't believe it.

Harry didn't remember him.

The man he was going to ask to marry him, had no idea who he was anymore.

The man he loved more than anything, couldn't remember the day they first met, their first date, their first everything. He forgot it all.

Louis was a stranger to Harry.

The thought made Louis cry harder and he only stopped when his eyes were hurting too much to ignore and he was getting cold because his clothes were soaking wet. He stood up on shaky legs and walked to his car, which now had a ticket, before getting inside and closing his eyes.

This was going to be hard.

~

Louis was awake when the doorbell rung, he got up from the couch and walked up to the door, taking a deep breath before opening it. "Hi Anne, Harry." He tired to smile as he stood aside letting them enter.

"Hey Louis, did you sleep well?" Anne asked as she walked into the apartment, Harry following behind.

"I guess." He mumbled as they came to a stop in the living room. But something caught Anne's eye, the room looked too bare, it looked like a house, not a home where two people who loved each other so much had lived for three years.

The pictures. Most the pictures were gone.

"Louis?" Louis hummed so Anne continued. "Where are all the pictures?"

"Oh err I took some of them down." He said as Harry looked around the room.

"Harry get comfortable, I'm just going to talk to Louis quickly." Anne said before pulling Louis into the kitchen.

"Why'd you take them down? They're not going to help him remember if they're not even on the walls." She asked as Louis tried to stop the tears. He wanted to stop crying, he was sick of crying.

"I didn't want to overwhelm him with too much too fast. He would see pictures of himself with a stranger kissing and cuddling I didn't want to put too much on him yet." Louis mumbled as he tried to get rid of the lump in his throat.

"Lou?"

"I couldn't see them, alright?!" He suddenly yelled before softening his voice. "I couldn't look at them, because I remember everything, every feeling, every word, I remember it all and it hurts because I'm the the only one who remembers."

"Oh honey." Anne sighed before pulling Louis into her embrace. "He will remember."

"I'll put them back up soon, just not right now."

"Alright. I'll help you when you do." She whispered softly. "Cmon let's go back into the living room."

Louis took a deep breath and nodded before following Anne to where Harry was sat. "Oh and lou, these are for Harry if he gets a headache." She handed Louis some pills as they sat down on the couch.

"This is where I live?" Harry asked once Anne sat down next to him, Louis over on the other couch.

"Yeah." Louis breathed out. "You picked it. We had looked at multiple but you said you wanted this one, so we bought it."

"We lived together?"

Louis nodded, not trusting his voice not to break. Just then Bambi walked into the living room and meowed when she saw Harry. "We have a cat?"

"Yeah you do. Do you remember her name or do you want me to tell you?" Anne spoke seeing how Louis was trying to speak as little as possible and looked like he was on the brink of tears.

"Can you tell me?" Harry asked as the cat jumped up onto the couch and sat down on Harry's lap quickly.

"Her name's Bambi."

"Sweet name." Harry smiled as he started stroking the cat that nuzzled into him.

Anne stayed for the rest of the day while she tried to help Harry remember but so far, nothing.

It was now almost 10pm and Anne was about to leave. "Lou do you want me to come round tomorrow?" She asked once she pulled away from Harry's hug.

"Yeah." He said quietly as he leant against the wall. Anne nodded and said goodbye once more before leaving the apartment. The door closed and Harry turned around to face Louis. "Harry are you sure you want to stay here?" Louis asked.

Harry nodded almost instantly. "I want to remember. My heads fuzzy, it's like I know somethings missing, and I look at you and I feel like I'm so close to knowing who you are and remembering what we were. Because it feels like I know where I am but I don't at the same time. And I look at you and I feel like I should do something, feel something, and I guess I must have loved you if we were together, right?" He spoke quietly.

"Yeah." Louis whispered before clearing his throat. "I'm going to head to bed. I'll show you your room." Louis said as he walked towards the spare room, Harry following behind. "You can either sleep in this room. Or our room."

"Could I sleep in our room? It might help me remember." Harry asked as he fiddled with his hands and Louis nodded and walked past the spare room and into the master bedroom.

"I'll grab my stuff and let you relax." Louis said quietly as he reached for some clothes that were on the bed, then he grabbed one of the pillows but it was from Harry's side, he always slept on the left side. "There's a bathroom just through there." Louis pointed to a door in the corner of the room.

"Thank you, Louis." Harry smiled and Louis half smiled before he walked out the room and towards the spare room.

He dropped his clothes onto the bed before sitting down. It was so hard to sit back and try to watch Harry remember him, he could tell the boy was trying so hard to remember but he just couldn't.

~

When Harry woke up he automatically felt safe and comfortable, he had moved the pillow to the left side of the bed, as he always slept on the left, before he easily fell asleep.

It was something that made it so easy to relax, it smelled homely which was weird because he had no idea where he was. It was like there was pieces missing and he was trying to find them.

Harry really wanted to remember Louis, he looked at him and he felt something he didn't know what but it was weird and he wanted to remember. He had to.

He pulled a hoodie over his head before walking downstairs, he got into the kitchen and saw Louis sat at the table with a bowl of cereal in front of him. "Hi." Harry said quietly as he sat down.

"Oh hi, sleep okay?" Louis asked as he turned his phone off and placed it face down on the table.

"Yeah." Harry smiled as he looked at Louis face, he had gorgeous blue eyes. "You don't look like you did." He said referring the dark bags under Louis eyes.

"Sometimes I err struggle to sleep." Louis said quietly as he stood up. "I would have made a nice breakfast but I didn't normally cook so I kinda suck at it."

"It's okay."

"I can make cereal, that's about it." Louis smiled a little when Harry laughed.

"Cereals fine."

Louis nodded and grabbed Harry's favourite cereal before pouring it into a bowl then adding the right amount of milk that Harry liked before placing the bowl down with a spoon in front of him.

"Thanks, Louis." He smiled and picked up the spoon. "Can I ask you a question?"

Louis nodded so Harry continued. "How long did we live together?"

"Around three years." Louis breathed out as Bambi walked into the kitchen and over to her water bowl.

"And I can't remember any of it." Harry frowned slightly.

"It's okay, Harry. You will."

"How do you know?"

"Because I knew you'd wake up." He said matter of factly. "People kept saying 'if' you would wake up, but I was saying when. And I'm now saying when you get your memories back."

"Did you love me?" Harry asked after a few minutes.

Louis was almost taken aback by the question but he quickly regained composure and nodded. "Yeah. A lot. And I still do." He whispered the last part so Harry couldn't hear it, he didn't want to make him uncomfortable.

"Did I love you?" He asked.

"You told me you did." Louis said as he met Harry's gaze. "All the time."

"I did?"

"Yeah, sometimes you just said it 'cause you could. I'd be doing stuff for my work and you'd just come in the room and say you loved me then you'd leave." Louis smiled at the memory.

"Oh." Harry frowned again as he finished the bowl of cereal. "What do you do for a job?"

"I'm a teacher. I teach drama."

"What did I do?" Harry asked and Louis' breath caught in his throat slightly, Harry was at work when he had the accident.

"You were a builder, you work with one of our friends. Liam Payne?"

"I don't remember." He sighed.

"It's okay, it wasn't really your job anyway, you were just filling in for a year or so, it was a favour for Liam. Your real job was writing songs for people, you wrote lyrics on some famous songs too."

"That sounds fun, I do like music."

"You're a good singer too." Louis said with a small smile.

"You know about that?"

"Yeah, it was one of our first dates, you told me you liked to sing but you never sung in front of people. Until me." Louis looked down slightly. "Then you started to sing more."

Harry nodded and Louis took his bowl before placing it in the sink. "Do you remember who Zayn and Niall are?" Louis asked as he walked into the living room, Harry following behind.

Harry sighed as he sat down. "No."

"That's okay, you met them after you met me."

"Can I see them?"

"I can invite them round tomorrow." Louis smiled as the doorbell rung. "Oh that will be Anne."

He stood up and walked to the door and let Anne inside, she walked into the living room and sat down with Harry.

They spent the whole day looking at pictures and Anne even changed Louis' mind about the pictures and they put them back up, Harry looked at all of them and almost started crying, he said he looked so happy in the pictures and he just wished he could remember.

That night Anne left a little earlier than yesterday and Harry asked Louis some more questions, but Louis never answered the one about where or how they first met, he hoped Harry would remember that one without him telling him. He also left out some other things he wanted Harry to remember. Like how every Friday night they spend the night watching films cuddled on the couch, it was their weekly thing, he didn't tell him about the first time they said I love your or their first date or the day they moved into their own apartment.

He hoped Harry could remember those on his own.

The next day Louis let the boys come over but Harry still couldn't remember, he had been home for three days and he was still trying to remember. Louis knows he needed to patient but he just hated seeing Harry so confused when he saw their best friends and how much the green eyed boy was beating himself up because he couldn't remember.

The next two days were similar, more pictures, more questions, more people. But nothing was working.

Harry still couldn't remember.

~

It was now Thursday and Harry had been home for five days, Louis had started whispering 'I love you' before Harry went to bed, he needed to say it, he felt like he hadn't said it in so long.

He loved him. And he wished Harry could remember just how much he loved him.

Harry had just made their lunch and they ate whilst watching Greys Anatomy, they were both silent as they enjoyed the food.

Then after lunch Harry went into their room because he said he wanted to go grab one of his hoodies, Louis took their plates and put them into the sink before going back to the living room.

Meanwhile Harry was trying to pick one of his hoodies to wear, he was so indecisive that he couldn't even pick which hoodie he wanted.

He started looking through the wardrobe and only stopped when he found a hoodie that he wasn't sure was his but it felt familiar and like he should remember where he saw it. So he picked it up and walked back over to the bed and placed it down, he looked at it for a bit, trying to remember when he looked over to the bedside table on the right side of the bed and saw a piece of paper all crumpled but for some reason it was neatly folded and placed on top of a bunch of books.

His curiosity got the best of him and he walked over and picked it up carefully before slowly opening it.

Hey, Lou

You told me to call you that although you were slurring quite bad so I may have heard it wrong, maybe you shouldn't drink so much next time you go out by yourself :)

Anyway I wanted to make sure you got home okay so please text me, I just want to know you didn't somehow die after I dropped you off at home.

-Harry xx (or curly as you called me)

Oh and I left you some paracetamol for that headache your gonna have you loser (: don't photobomb my pictures next time.

Harry stared at the note with teary eyes and his mouth slightly agape. Suddenly it felt like all the air in the room had disappeared as a bunch of memories flashed through his head, most of them containing Louis. After a few minutes he was stood still in the bedroom with the note still tight in his grasp.

He remembered. He remembered everything.

The hoodie. The one that felt familiar. It was the one Louis was wearing when they first met.

He could remember.

He loved Louis. He loved him so much sometimes it hurt.

Harry placed the note back as he walked out the room and into the living room with a blank almost stunned look on his face. He saw Louis with his head in his hands, the tv paused, and he walked closer but Louis still had no idea he was there.

Seeing him felt like he had been given all the oxygen in the world and he could breathe again, he felt like he hadn't seen Louis in so long but he was there all along.

"It was March 8th 2014." Harry said as Louis picked his head up and turned around incredibly fast to look at Harry who was smiling as he stared at the wall covered in pictures. "I was on the beach and I was taking pictures of the sunset and the sea, I just got a new camera and I wanted to try it out." Harry said, staring at the wall as Louis looked at Harry with tears in his eyes, he was recalling he night they first met. "But then someone photobombed my picture, they had blue eyes, and brown hair. And it was you. You kept trying to get in my shot, no matter how much I moved, you followed and tried to get in the picture, I eventually asked you to move and you didn't instead you said you liked my curly hair, I realised you were drunk so I offered to take you home, after some struggle, I found out where you lived and got your apartment keys, I practically had to carry you up the stairs to your place, and then when we got to your room you passed out as soon as you hit the pillow. I put a blanket over you and wrote a note before getting you some pills and a water, then I left. You texted me the next day and we texted every day after that." Harry stopped talking and finally met eyes with Louis who had tears rolling down his cheeks as he slowly stood up.

"You remember?" He asked, his voice was so quiet. Scared.

"I remember." Harry nodded with smile as Louis ran up to Harry and wrapped his arms around him as he cried.

"You remember, you remember." He sobbed into Harry's neck as Harry held him close. He couldn't believe he forgot the person he loved most, he couldn't even imagine how Louis felt.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry I couldn't remember you." Harry whispered, his own tears falling now.

Louis just held him tighter as he pressed gentle kisses to his neck, where he could feel his pulse. "Just please don't do it again, I thought you were never gonna remember me."

"I could never, ever forget you forever, Lou. I love you, so much." Harry whispered into Louis' hair.

"I love you too." Louis hiccuped as he pulled away slightly. "You remember everything?"

"Everything." Harry smiled as he wiped Louis' tears away.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I remember you stuttering like a cute dork when you told me you loved me, you let it slip and you were so scared I wasn't going to say it back." Harry chuckled slightly at the memory and Louis shoved his chest slightly but still didn't let go.

"I remember our first date, I was so nervous and ended up spilling my drink on you, I was so mortified you wouldn't want to see me again but instead you laughed and asked me out for another date at the end of the night." Harry continued as Louis smiled and listened to Harry talk. "I remember the day we moved in, we wanted a place of our own and when we moved in here we said we wanted to paint before moving in the furniture, we didn't really paint much, we tried but then you flicked me with the paintbrush and I flicked you back so we ended up with more paint on us than on the walls, which is why in our music room the walls have paint splatters of different colours, because we wanted to keep it that way."

"I even remember the morning of my accident." Harry said and kissed the top of Louis' head when he felt the boy tense slightly. "I was about to leave to help liam at work and you weren't getting up and you were so grumpy because it was 7am but I needed you to feed Bambi and check my new song so I could send it off before I left. But you were so grumpy about getting up so I kissed you over and over all over your face and neck until you started laughing and pushed me off, then you got up and tried to chase me as I ran away." Harry stopped talking for a second as he admired Louis. "And sadly I remember the boys too." Harry joked. "Especially the day we said that we were moving in together. They were so annoyingly happy, Niall was the worst, I think he wanted to move in as well. Except they did help a lot when it came to packing and moving boxes. Well until Zayn tripped over one of Niall's shoes and thought he broke his arm." Louis chuckled as he remembered sitting in the hospital for hours only for the doctor to say nothing was wrong and it was just bruised. "And I remember the day you surprised me with Bambi, I cried and hugged you so tight because you had been saying no for so long. And you pretended to hate her but I know you don't, I hear you say goodnight to her before you come to bed, and when I came home from work she was always asleep on your chest as you slept on the couch, I never told you I knew because I thought it was a cute thing that could stay a secret."

Louis smiled into Harry's neck. "You do remember it all."

"I do." Harry smiled and kissed Louis' head again. "I love you, and I'm sorry for what happened."

"It wasn't your fault, H."

"I'm still sorry."

"Well you remember now." Louis pulled away and grabbed Harry's hand pulling him towards their bedroom. "And I haven't gotten a good sleep in ages so no visitors today, just sleep."

"Okay, love, just sleep." Harry chuckled as he climbed into bed with Louis and entwined their legs together. "Goodnight, Lou."

"Goodnight, H." Louis whispered against Harry's chest. "Thank you for remembering me."

"Thank you for keeping that silly note." Harry said as he looked at the note on Louis' bedside table.

"It wasn't silly, it was cute, and it was the first thing I had of you."

"You're cute." Harry smiled as he watched Louis slowly drift off to sleep.

"M'not."

"Are too."

"Not."

"Yes you are, loser."

"Asshole."

"Dickface."

"Love you." Louis whispered with a smile, everything was falling back into place.

"Love you too. Now sleep." Harry chuckled as Louis hummed before he fell asleep easily.

Harry could remembered it all.

Everything in the last five years, he could remember, and he was so happy.

~

A week later Louis proposed just like he said he would, the beach, sunset, lights, flowers, ring.

Harry said no.

Then they broke up.

Just kidding he said yes.

He loved Louis and he couldn't wait to marry him, he was the love of his life and he was going to remember him forever no matter what happened, he wouldn't let himself forget again.
