A Lifetime In A Moment
The sharp, loud, whirring of the helicopter was all that could be heard in the snowy, forested, mountains. The rescue team inside, who'd spent days searching for any sign of human life, were losing hope.
"Maybe this isn't even where he is, we've been at it for days." Niall, a trainee, suggested as they hovered over the dark mountains, bright lights from their copter shining below.
Liam, the head of the rescue team, shook his head. "Try not to think that way, it leads to less effort. Lets give it another good hour before we head back for the night."
"Yeah.. okay, I guess you're right. I just wonder if he could be somewhere else, its just a rumor that's been speculated by his fans-" Niall started but was cut off by another crew member, Zayn.
"Stop! Stop! I think there's a house, or a cabin.. or something. Look!" He pointed and Liam quickly steered the helicopter in that direction, and sure enough, poking out from a massive pile of snow, was the tip of a rooftop.
"Alright, get your supplies everyone I'm dropping the ladder" Liam instructed. They were well equipped with ice picks and drills to get through any frozen matter. Niall, Zayn and several other members of the team descended from the ladder and got straight to work, trying to dig their way through to a door or a window, or something.
The sight that greeted them when they finally got through a window on the side of the tiny wooden cabin, was expected, yet unexpected at the same time.
There he was, Louis Tomlinson, the 29 year old travel vlogger, naked on the frosted floor, blankets and clothes covering his body for warmth. Another, unidentified man was there too, naked as well and intertwined with Louis beneath the blanket heap.
"Looks like they were trying to use each other's body heat to keep warm." Zayn murmured, coming closer to the pair. Their eyes were closed, skin gray, and bodies cold to the touch.
"They're... they're dead aren't they.." Niall whispered, his eyes misty. He'd only been on a few rescue trips, and this was the first time he'd ever witnessed death.
"Unfortunately so mate," Zayn said, patting his shoulder. "These cases are hard at first, but they get easier. I promise."
Niall shook his head, he didn't think seeing a lifeless body could ever get easier.
"Well, lets get them loaded up." Zayn said, and it almost seemed too casual to Niall as the rest of the crew loaded up the two bodies while Liam lowered the helicopter.
Niall kind of just stood there in shock, his emotions threatening to bubble over. He was about to follow the rest of them when he noticed Louis' vlog camera on the floor, he grabbed it quickly and hurried after everyone else onto the helicopter again.
"Dammit.. it's dead." Niall muttered, trying to turn on the camera once he was in his seat.
"What's dead?" Zayn asked, glancing over at him.
"This... it looks like it was Louis' camera. He was probably vlogging this for his channel" Niall replied, setting it in his lap.
"I'm sure there's a charger in his bag. We can plug it in when we get back okay?" Liam said, as they lifted up into the air.
"Yeah.. okay" Niall mumbled softly. He wasn't sure this was the kind of job he wanted after all. He wanted to rescue people.
He didn't want to find people who were past the point of rescuing.
Back at the base where they were staying, far beneath the large mountain range, Liam was dealing with getting the bodies to where they needed to be, and everyone else was heading to their bunks.
Niall though, couldn't sleep. He was so curious about the camera, and what videos it might hold. He'd gotten a hold of the charger so he plugged it into the wall at his bed, and turned it on, clicking to the most recent video.
"Welllll a lot of you guessed I was coming here, but ya know. I still wanted it to be a surprise" Louis grinned into the camera, all bundled up in coats and scarves, his cheeks red. "I know these mountains have been closed to the public or whatever for decades, but I was feeling a little adventurous. Plus it's so empty out here, so who's even gonna know?" Louis turned the camera off of himself, showing off the snowy scenery around him. "But, don't do this. Just because I am doesn't mean you should. Don't be stupid."
He turned the camera back to himself again, "Right, well wish me luck. I'll check in later, hopefully the view at the top of this thing is as great as people say. But I do have to wonder.. if so many people have gotten to the top of these mountains.. why have none of them made maps? Whatever. I guess I'll make one when I get back."
---
"Well its been pretty uneventful so far. It's getting late, you can see here that the sun is starting to set.." Louis showed the beautiful sunset through the trees. "I'm not exactly sure where I am, but up is up and down is down right? I think I'm gonna make camp here though, it's starting to get really cold. See you guys soon."
---
"Day two, its around 3 pm, and still haven't seen anything too interesting. I was hoping to see some pretty rock formations or wildlife, but so far nothing. If it continues like this you guys are in for a pretty boring video. Fuckin' hell."
---
"Finally, something interesting! Okay mates, check this out" Louis turned the camera to show a small, wooden cabin, just standing there alone amid the masses of trees. "Maybe I've found a place to stay for the night eh? Let's see if someone's here."
Louis knocked on the door, and waited for a moment before a kind looking man, who couldn't be older than 27, opened the door. His hair was a bit long and chocolate brown, peeking out from beneath his thick woolen beanie.
"Hi.. um I'm Louis. I've been exploring the area. This your place?" He asked.
"Ummm... no actually it's not." The guy spoke awkwardly, his voice slow and even. "I've been exploring around here too, ended up getting lost. So, I uh, I found this place. Its been abandoned, completely empty. But it's decently insulated and I thought it would be warmer than my tent so.. uh yeah."
"Right, well it's getting dark and I'm definitely in need of some company. Mind if I crash here with ya? What's your name by the way?" Louis asked,.
"Its Harry... and um yeah I suppose so. I'm not that great of company though." He mumbled, shutting the door behind Louis.
"Nonsense, everyone is great company! Well unless they're a serial killer. Or this Nick kid that I went to secondary school with.. but that's a story for another time" Louis rambled, making Harry chuckle.
"How do you know I'm not a serial killer?" Harry countered, quirking an eyebrow.
Louis pursed his lips, "I guess I don't. But you have kind eyes, and quite honestly if you are, than that'll make for an interesting vlog. Assuming I get out alive" He laughed.
Harry rolled his eyes, "Wow we just met and you're really putting your trust out there like that?" he paused, "But yeah, no need to worry. Definitely not a serial killer."
"Good, then see? You're perfect company!" Louis smiled, "Well guys, Harry and I have some talking to do, I'll check in again soon."
---
"Well, it turns out me and curly here, are pretty much complete opposites" Louis spoke into the camera, his arm around Harry. "But he's quite fun, almost as fun as me. But not quite."
Harry shot him a glare, "I'm loads of fun." He pouted.
"Well Harry 'loads of fun' Styles, and I are going to continue this journey together! Two is better than one, right?" Louis grinned, "Also 'Styles' what kind of a last name is that? I'm not sure how I'm feeling about his winter attire style."
Harry glared at him again.
"Well, catch you in the morning guys. Hopefully our new friend Harry isn't a snorer."
---
"Good news! Harry isn't a snorer" Louis greeted through the camera. "Bad news... we're snowed in. Might be a bit of a long day today, probably won't have much content for you. We're hoping it thaws out soon."
---
"Well, we've been in this place for two days. No signs of this shit melting." Louis sighed, "We're hoping someone finds us. But with no cell reception, it's a bit hard to have hope."
"So, in the case that we die-" Harry spoke and Louis cut him off.
"That sounds so bloody morbid!" He exclaimed.
Harry sighed, "Okay in the case that we may never leave this cabin, we've decided to document our time here together. Get to know each other, and allow you, assuming someone finds this video, can get to know us too."
---
"I'm Jared I'm 19-"
"Louis!" Harry exclaimed from behind the camera as he filmed.
"But they already know who I am!" Louis argued. "Fine, I'm LOUIS. I'm 29. I'm a travel vlogger, and yeah I like seeing the world and shit."
He walked up to trade places with Harry who is next to stand in front of the camera.
"I'm Harry, I'm 27 and I used to work in a bakery." He stated, making Louis double over with laughter.
"Of all the things you could've shared about yourself, and you say that?" Louis cackled.
"Well, I really enjoyed it there! And I dunno it was just the first thing that popped into my head!"
"Well," Louis smirked. "You heard it here first. Harry is 27 and used to work in a bakery!"
---
"So Harry, tell us about yourself." Louis said, the camera angled on Harry's face. "Why are you here of all places?"
"Well, I'm a bit of a nomad to be honest. I like to see the world as my home, I don't want to confine myself to one place when there's endless space to explore." Harry explained, passion in his green eyes. "Even as a kid, I always knew, that there was so much more to the world than Cheshire, where I grew up. My mum and my sister Gemma, they've never wanted to leave there. And it's a beautiful town, it really is. There's just so many other beautiful places too, you know?"
"Mhmm" Louis responded, urging Harry continue.
"I'm a bit of a loner. Wandering from place to place, there's not a lot of time to form deep relationships. But I have a relationship with the earth, and the many different cultures in it, and it's brought me so much joy." Harry said, it was obvious he had so much love for the earth and all it provided.
"Okay now tell us about you Louis" Harry said, grabbing the camera.
"Umm I dunno. I'm not that great with like, 'deep' stuff per say." Louis mumbled, looking deep in thought. "I grew up in Doncaster, good old Donny. I wouldn't dream of being raised anywhere else, surprising as that may sound. It's got a special place in my heart. But yeah.. everyone always told me throughout school that I would never amount to much, and that it would be useless chasing my dreams of travelling, asking 'where would I get the money?' and shit like that."
He paused, taking a deep breath. "This is actually something I've never shared on my channel before. But umm anyway, I spent years as a teen and young adult working at a local Toys R Us. Yeah, Toys R Us can you believe it?" he chuckled, tears springing to his eyes. "I saved every single pound until I had enough to take my first trip. And well, I am so blessed and so lucky to get to say that, it worked out perfectly. The vlog went viral and I was shocked. Honestly, still am to this day. I'm so lucky. So many people want this life and I don't know how I was lucky enough to be the one that got it. But I'm forever grateful." A tear slipped down his cheek.
---
"Its starting to get really cold, none of the snow has melted." Louis said into the camera, shivering beneath a blanket that was wrapped around his shoulders. Harry was seen in the background, curled up on the floor, trying to thaw a water jug with his hands as they had no heat left. They didn't have a fire, the cabin was old and didn't have heat or electricity. "Not sure how much longer we can last, and I hope someone finds us soon. Although, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wouldn't trade this for the world. I've gotten to know such a beautiful person through this experience."
Harry looked up from where he was with a soft smile. "Me either. And if we do make it out of here, we're gonna be nomad, travel vloggers. Together."
"Mhmm" Louis smiled. "I don't know how many days its been guys, but however many days it's been must be how long it takes to fall in love. Because, I'm in love with Harry."
---
"I'm feeling a bit weak, Harry is too." Louis said softly, "I think I'm just gonna leave the camera on from here on. I dunno if I'll remember to keep filming otherwise."
The camera was then set on the floor where Harry and Louis could be seen.
They were shown trying to thaw any food they had with their own body heat, to no success.
They were seen slowly dancing around the room in eachothers arms, talking nonsense about a life that they were only imagining.
More trying to thaw food and water.
Laughing together over nothing as the confusion of hypothermia crept in.
Crying with pain as their features became frosted over, black and raw with frostbite.
"Take off your clothes.." Louis said quietly, in one of the rare coherent moments he had. Harry did as he said, and then, both of them naked, curled up to eachother for any sort of body heat that they might have left.
"I love you." Harry whispered.
---
Tears were quietly rolling down Niall's cheeks as the video kept playing, but there was no movement on the screen from that point on.
He felt like he'd just watched the entire lifetime of two lovers, but only in a moment of time.
