This happened when Fates came out. I wanted Birthright because of how it was advertised. When I went the video game store and I was about to buy it guess what the lady said? She said something along the lines of "Oh, are you sure you want to buy that version? I heard it's the hardest version." Like what if some mom who had no clue about Fire Emblem asked for the easier version of the game for her kid. That lady would give the mom Conquest, her kid would have to play the hard version, which according to the cashier, is the easier version. I had to tell the cashier that Birthrights was the easier version. Isn't she supposed to know that?
