"Martha! Martha, where are you?" John cried into the darkness. His sister had been missing for 3 days, and the horse, Charming, had only just made its way back, distressed and freaked out.
"Oh Charming, where are we?" John whispered, petting his horses mane. The trees stood tall and bare, roots poised ready to snatch him up. Mist hung low, making it impossible to see beyond three meters in any direction. The sky was a mystic dark shade of blue. The moon hid behiend thick clouds. Snow covered the ground.
John hugged himself closer into his cloak, and shivered.
A sharp piercing howl cut through the silence. Both John and Charming's head whipped up in fear.
Another howl came, closer, and two bright yellow eyes shone through the darkness. A wolf. Not just one, but a whole pack.
Charming reared up in fright and John shrieked, holding on his mane before falling off the back.
"Charming, no!" John cried fearfully, but it was too late, his horse had galloped off in the other direction.
John scrambled to his feet and the wind picked ups some more, whipping his black cloak. He backed away slowly before one wolf snarled.
He turned and fled., running like he had never ran before. He glanced behiend him to see the wolves gaining, snapping at his ankles.
He tripped suddenly over a root, and tumbled down over some ledge he hadn't quiet spotted. He hit the floor with a thud and backed away, struggling to his feet. The wolves were gaining yet again, and out of some miracle, John turned and saw two shiny silver gates. They were tall and imposing, and looked deathly uninviting, but what was his other choice.
He sprinted towards them and grabbed them, calling at the top of his lungs "Help, please! Please someone help me, please!" He tugged on the gates and all of a sudden they opened. He tumbled through and landed on the floor, slamming the gates with his foot.
The wolves jumped at them and stuck their snouts through the bars but it didn't open again. John shuffled back, his heart racing. His mind whirred.
Sitting up, he glanced to his right, and saw a red ribbon lying on the floor.
He picked it up and turned it over. A white M was inked on the back. "Martha..." John whispered.
Standing up, he looked up and the residence. A tall castle stood, looking down on John. It looked no more inviting than the gates, less possibly, but what choice does he have.
He had hope that Martha was here, and that was all the motivation he needed.
He approached the big doors and pushed one open slightly. It made no noise. Light streaked into the dark castle. John slipped through the gap. (i accidently wrote gay there how)
"Hello?" He called into the darkness. "Martha?"
*****
"Oh look, mon amour!" Lafayette whispered, his French accent glazing every syllable. "It is a boy, just like it foretold."
Lafayette peeked round the corner of the pillar at the boy. He had long curly brown hair, and green sparkling eyes. Freckles littered his face and he had a black cloak draped over his shoulders. A red ribbon was held in his hand and he looked scared, yet there was a slight tinge of hope.
"Yes, but Laf, how can you be sure?" Hercules hissed back, also staring at the boy.
"Martha? Martha?!" He called out.
"Look, brown curly locks, eyes green as grass, it must be!" Laf smiled, his eyes sparkling with hope.
"Oh, Martha, Maz?" He cries, advancing slowly towards a staircase.
"Oh, he is looking for the girl!" Laf exclaims quietly.
"Well, he needs to look for the door, Master will be so very angry." Herc hisses back.
"No, mon amour, we must lead him to her." Laf smiles, and clicks his fingers. A stairway directly behiend the one John was about the walk up lights up. John turns around and makes cautiously for that one.
"Maz?" He calls out hesitantly. A faint feminine cry of "John!" could be heard echoing down.
John's face lit up and he hurled himself up the stairs, going about 5 at a time, all the way up the tower.
Laf turned around to Herc. "Mon amour, we must go tell the others, we are saved!"
***
John walked up the few remaining stairs, all made of stone now, and dimly lit. It was a high tower.
"Martha?" He calls.
A voice form the other side of the door shouts "John! I'm in here!"
John turned the handle and ran forward, spotting a door with a small window in at the bottom.
He falls to his knees, crying. "Martha, I'm so glad I found you!"
"Oh John! Thank you, thank you!" The blonde replies, also reduced to tears at seeing his brother again.
She reaches her hands out and they embrace as best as they could. "Your hands are so cold Maz, and shivering, we need to get you out of here!" John whispers.
"No, I need you to leave this place."
"Who did this to you?"
"No, John you have to go!"
"No, I wont leave you!" John's words were cut off by a hand grabbing the back and flinging him away from the door.
"Run John!" Martha cried.
"What are you doing here?" A voice cried. The fires burnt out with the gush of wind.
John scrambled back against the wall. "Who's there, who are you?" He asked fearfully, his words echoing in the empty dungeon.
"The master of this castle." The voice hisses and John flinched away, recognising the all too angry tone too much from his childhood.
"I've come for my sister!" John declared, rather bravely he thought, turning his body so it faced the way the silhouette turned. "She's sick, can't you see? Please let her out!"
"Then she shouldn't have trespassed here!" The voice shouted, and John fearfully pressed himself against the wall, his mind reeling at the tone of voice, frightened almost beyond anything at home.
Almost.
"B-but she could die! Please, I'll do anything!" John begged, tears welling in his eyes.
Martha watched fearfully, all to aware of what John could bargain himself into.
"There's nothing you can do." The voice spits, almost scoffing.
"There must be some way I can..." John trailed off as the silhouette travelled towards the door.
A moment of realisation hit him harder than a brick. He loved his sister, and would do anything for her to be safe. He squeezed her hand.
"Wait!" He called, and the shadow paused. "John took a deep breath before pulling his hand out of his sister's.
His hand hovered as he hesitated. "Take me instead." He said, fear lacing his voice.
"You?" The voice says, before it softened and he asked "You would take her place?"
"John, no!" Martha screamed, verging on hysterical, "No John, you don't know what your doing!"
"If I did," John ventured, ignoring his sister's cries, "Would you let her go?"
"Please John," Martha sobs.
The shadow turned and faced John, who flinched and was in the pool of light escaping form a broken tile in the ceiling. "Yes," He hissed, "But you must promise to stay here forever."
John blinked. He looked down, before coking his head and saying "Come into the light."
The boy stepped into the light and John saw what he had only been warned about. From the stories, the fables that circle his village, what him and his friends would tell ghost stories about, what every Mother would warn their child about as they went out to play. The prince, who was cold hearted, and blood lusted, who kept many prisoners as children went missing. Who's palace was cursed or enchanted, no on could tell. All the servants and the selfish prince himself were doomed to stay trapped inside the castle. No one knew what would break the curse, except the residents. (and y'all Disney fans (if not its true love, falling in a two sided love))
John gasped and pressed a hand to his mouth. He turned and faced Martha and put his hands on the bars, looking down. He supressed a tear.
"No John!" Martha cried, reaching to her brother and putting her arms on her shoulders. Joh looked up at her and put his hands on her arms. "I won't let you do this!"
John gave her a weak smile and stood up, stepping once more into the light, and towards the prince. Martha's hand was left outstretched towards her dear, brown haired, green eyed, freckled brother.
He looked down before hutting his eyes and tilting his head defiantly up. "You have my word." He whispered shakily.
"Done." The prince snapped, pushing past him.
John put his hands to his face and fell to his knees, his cloak pooling around him. He fell to floor like praying and pushed a fist to the floor. His freedom, it was all gone.
The prince unlocked the door and John stand up and Martha flung herself out of her cell and onto John. "No, John listen to me. Your the best of all of us, Mary and James and Henry, you can look after them, please-" She was dragged away.
"Wait!" John cried, but it was too late.
"John!" Martha shrieked, a cold cry that echoes throughout the castle. Madison hugged himself tighter to Thomas.
"Wait!" John called, reaching towards her.
The prince dragged Martha out and down the palace.
"No! Please, spare my brother, he's done nothing but protect us all!" She shrieked, as he flung her on Charming. Charming took off, running away from the danger and scary voices.
"He's no longer your concern!" Alexander spat.
"No, Charming, please! No! John!" Martha screamed, fat tears rolling down her cheeks. Charming carried her off into the night.
John watched from his window of his new cell up in the tower, and folded his arms onto the window cell and buried his face in it and cried. He watched his dear sister for the last time.
****
As Alexander climbed the stairs, a cold frown resting on his face, Lafayette ran up beside him.
"Master?" He asked hesitantly.
"What?!" The prince growled, turning around to face the servant.
"Well, since the boy is going to be with us for quite some time, perhaps you might want to offer him a more comfortable room?" He questioned.
The prince growled at him before continuing.
"Then again, maybe not." Laf muttered.
****
The prince slammed open John's cell door, to find him kneeled on the floor, face buried his his palms, sobbing.
John sniffed and said tearfully "You didn't even let me say goodbye. I'll never see her again!"
He sobbed once more and wiped his eyes.
The princes face softened slightly at the sight. After all, the boy was handsome and it did him no good to be crying on the floor. He could be the one to break the spell.
"And I didn't get to say goodbye!" The boy whispered, tear flowing down his cheeks.
The prince rubbed the back of his necks before muttering, "I'll show you to your room." He turned to leave.
"My room?" John asked inquisitively, tucking a strand of hair being his ear. "But I thought-"
The prince turned around; "You wanna... You wanna stay in the tower?"
"No."
"Then follow me."
****
They walked along one of the passages, John following behiend Alexander, head low. Lafayette walked next to the prince, holding a candle stick. The walked in silence, and John looked around at the halls they were passing.
Dragons leered at him from one way, teeth sharp and eyes wild, claws pointed. John stepped back slightly from these stone figures and glanced at the other walls. Terrifying beings of all kind loomed in on him. John's eyes widened slightly, remined of nightmares he had as a child. He looked around, panic flittering, before running to catch up with the prince, his cloak whipping around him.
Alexander glanced slightly behiend him, to see the panic in John's eyes before he shut them, walking solemnly, a single tear gliding down his cheek.
"Say something to him." Laf whispered in an unconcealed French accent.
"Huh? Oh..." The prince murmured, thinking of something. "I, um, hope you like it here."
He turned back to Laf, and Laf made little shooing motions, prompting him further. Alexander turned back slightly again, saying "The castle is your home now, so you may go anywhere you like except the west wing."
John looked up and asked "What's in the west-?"
"It's forbidden!" The prince shouted, his words echoing. John stepped back slightly, his eyes laser trained on the prince's arm, waiting for the attack. Unlike every other time, it didn't come. the prince say the fear in John's eyes and kept walking.
****
The door to John's room creaked open. John peered in and was met with a lovely sight, a four poster, a full length mirror, a walk in wardrobe and a window with a view of the snow covered outside. John gripped Martha's ribbon tighter.
"Now if you need anything," The prince said gruffly, "my servants will attend you."
John stepped slowly inside the room.
"Dinner," Laf whispered, "Invite him to dinner."
"You, uh- You will join me for dinner." Alexander declares, "And that is not a request!"
He slams the door and John gasps, pressing himself up to it and balling his fists, sobbing. He turned from the door and threw himself on the bed, sobbing at his new fate.
The prince outside herd and gulped guiltily.
****
When the time came the prince paced angrily. "What's taking him so long? I told him to come down! Why isn't he here yet?!" He demanded.
"Oh, try to be patient sir," Eliz said sweetly, "The boy lost his family and freedom all in one day."
"Master," Laf says carefully, "Have you thought this could be the one to break the spell?"
"Of course I have!" The prince snapped, "I'm not a fool!"
"Good," Laf said, "So you fall in love with him, he falls in love with you and poof! The spell is broken! We could leave by midnight!"
"Oh it's not that easy Lafayette," Eliza whispered, "These things take time."
"But the rose, it is wilting..." Lafayette whispered back.
"Oh, it's no use..." The prince murmured. "He' so handsome and kind and I'm, well..."
Eliza and Laf glanced at each other and Laf shrugged. "You must help him see past that." Eliza reassured.
"I don't know how." Alexander huffs.
Eliza frowned. "Well you can start by making yourself more presentable. Straighten up, be charming!"
The prince blinked before standing up straight.
"Yes!" Laf smiles broadly, "When he comes in give him a dashing smile!"
The prince attempted a smile.
"Don't frighten him," Eliza warns.
"No, impress him with your wit!" Laf adds.
"But be gentle!" Herc adds running into the room and standing next to Laf.
"Shower him with compliments!" Laf adds.
"But be sincere!" Eliza frowns, nodding.
"And above all," All three start, "You must control your temper!"
The prince growled and the main door handle opened and a sheepish Madison stepped in.
"Uh, he's not coming..."
****
"What?" The prince screeched and it echoes up the castle to John. He flinched as crossed his legs on the bed, hugging a pillow.
Alexander ran up the stairs and pounded heavily on the door. It took John all his self control not to hide under the bed.
"I thought I told you to come down to dinner!" The prince roared.
"I'm not hungry!" John replied haughtily.
Madison, Herc, Laf and Eliza each put their hand in a hand, sighing.
"You come out, or I'll... I'll... I'll break down the door!" Alexander bellowed.
"Master...." Thomas whispered, appearing out of nowhere like usual, " I could be wrong but I don't think this is the best way to win his affections..."
Thomas wrapped an arm around James's waist.
"Please...." Herc implored "Attempt to be a gentle man."
"But he is being so difficult." Alexander pointed out, trying to keep calm.
John giggled slightly, but muffled it with his pillow. He was quite enjoying this.
"Gently, gently..." Eliza murmured.
The prince sighs before saying in a monotone "Will you come down to dinner?"
"No!" John answered.
Alexander snapped; "You can't stay in there forever!" He screeched.
"Yes, I can!" John shouted back, biting back tears at the familiar tone of Alexander's voice.
"Fine! Then go ahead and starve! If you don't eat with me you don't eat at all!"
He bolted down the hall, slamming the door heavily.
"Oh dear-" Eliza murmured.
****
Alexander stormed into the west wing, enraged. He muttered crazily to himself before grabbing the mirror that lay beside the rose.
"Show me the boy." He commanded.
The mirror warped into the image of John. He was sitting on the bed, sobbing into the pillow. His sleeves were rolled up and Alexander winced at the battle field of scars. He had his hair down, brown curls cascading past his shoulders. He watched at John picked up the red ribbon and gently traced the M inked on it before trying it it in his hair, tear rolling down his cheeks. He caught sight of more scars and bruises on his neck.
John muttered too himself "I don't want to join him! I don't want anything to do with him! Oh, Martha would know what to do... And James, and Henry and probably even Mary!" John buried his face into his pillow.
Alexander put the mirror down. "I'm just fooling myself." He whispered.
A petal fell from the rose.
****
John quietly opened the door. He blinked when he was met with the loitering faces of Laf and Eliza. John had sleeves were rolled down again.
"Oh," John whispers.
"Mon dieu!" Laf exclaims jokingly, "He has emerged."
John, understanding a little French, giggled.
"Dear," Eliza said, "Are you alright? I know Alexander can be... a handful..."
John nodded and wiped his eyes and nodded.
"I can assure you he will not come out of his room until the morning. I can take you round if you would like?" Eliza offered.
John was slightly taken aback by the hospitality of them both but he whispered "Yes, that would be lovely."
"Where would you like to go mon ami?" Laf asked as John stepped out of his room. "There is the ballroom, the dining room, the library-"
John's face lit up. "Oh the library, please!"
"Like to read?" Eliza asked.
"Love to."
****
As they entered the library, and Laf pulled back the curtains, John gasped. The library walls were painted a soft sea green, and all decors were gold. Books of all kind were staked high up to the celling. A large fireplace stood, fire glowing.
"Why, I've never seen so many books in my life!" John exclaimed and Eliza giggled. He walked forwards and span around, gazing at all the book.
****
John had gathered a hefty pile of books and was sitting in front of the fire, leaning against a chair leg. He had bundled himself in a cloak and grabbed a cushion from a chair.
He was snuggled up, reading happily.
Eliza watched form the door way. Laf had already left, complaining he was tired, when in all reality Eliza knew he was gong to go make out with Herc.
Alex came softly padding down the hall and Eliza saw and put a finger to her lips. He cocked his head and crept towards her, glancing in the library door. He saw the freckled boy snuggled up comfily, reading a book by the fire (don't burn the books-) Alexander's heart warmed at the sight. He gave a soft smile.
As if John knew, he glanced worriedly to the door frame. Eliza had ducked out of sight, so all John saw was Alexander, smiling softly.
John hesitated for a second, before smiling softly back, and going back to reading his book.
Alexander looked over at Eliza and Eliza shooed him into the room.
Cautiously, Alex approached John, before sitting on the carpet next to him. It wasn't quiet that close, but not too far, within touching distance. John shuffled slightly, before turning and leaning his back against Alexander's side. He froze.
John wrapped his cloak around him gently and hugged his pillow before going back to reading.
Alexander looked to Eliza with bisexual distress written all over his face. Eliza laughed silently and gave him two thumbs up before walking off.
Alexander shifted, before wrapping his arm around John.
