So You Think You Can Write

There's one thing that every aspiring writer wants when creating their work. They want it to be good enough for people to love.

So, here's the thing...

It's good enough as long as the grammar is decent and the characters are relatable.

I've read from multiple sources that it doesn't matter how good your writing actually is, how good your plot is. People will only be interested, they will only care if you have interesting, relatable characters.

So, ask yourself, who is your audience? How does my character relate to them? And go from there.

That being said, there are some things that publishers like and dislike about the actual writing.

For instance, you need to forget everything your middle school teacher said about finding new and exciting words. Just write natural, like your speaking normally. You don't need huge, professional sounding words that no one knows the meaning of. So, stop worrying about finding the right words. Just write.

You don't need sentences like, He walked down the tortuous hallway to get to the florid room. The man spoke in a posh manner. "Where do you keep the brandy?" He inquired.

Chances are, no one will understand what you're talking about. Sometimes, a good vocabulary makes it sound better...other times it's good to dumb it down.

And people tend to skim the "he said, she said" sentences anyway. So, you probably won't need anything more than asked or said. If done correctly, maybe you won't even need those except for a few times.

So, really it's a lot easier than we writers have been making it. We don't need fancy words. We don't need an overly complicated plot. We just need good grammar, relatable characters, a few details -- both inwardly and outwardly -- and easy to read the language.
