Bastille Day

You know, if I had been smart I would've ignored the randomized prompt thing on July 14th to do this prompt. But I am not smart, so here's a one-shot that's just about two weeks late! Total one-eighty from yesterday. Also sorry if my representation of Bastille Day is incorrect, I'm not French so my knowledge comes from research not first hand experience. -Colorado

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ladybug had always loved the fireworks. When she was little, she would sit on her father's shoulders as they watched from the streets below. Once her parents weren't concerned about Marinette falling off her balcony accidentally, she began to watch the fireworks from there. Now that she was Ladybug, she had upgraded from her balcony. Was sitting on France's most iconic landmark on Bastille Day a bit cliche? Yes. However, five-year old Marinette was jumping for joy as the fireworks began. Watching the colors take over the sky was mesmerizing. Ladybug could almost feel her nervousness slipping away, almost.

What she had planned for tonight would change things forever. The dynamic her and Chat Noir had been quite comfortable with would change. The new dynamic her and Adrien had since three weeks ago would also change. But Ladybug could feel her secrets bubbling up like lava, and it was only a matter of time before she erupted. Might as well control when and how it happened.

Chat Noir landed behind her. The two of them were on the highest point of the Eiffel Tower. It was a bit darker up there than on the beams below.

"Good evening, My Lady. Happy French National Day!" Chat Noir picked up her hand and placed a kiss on it. Her heart rate sped up as he gave her a grin that had always made her melt.

"Hello, mon chaton, Happy French National Day," she said as he sat next to her. The childlike wonder in his eyes was something Ladybug had rarely seen. He looked so... happy.

"Sorry that I'm a bit late, Nathalie needed to brief me about my photoshoot tomorrow," he apologized. Even though it had been three weeks since they had revealed their identities, Ladybug was still surprised to hear Chat talk about his life as Adrien so casually.

"It's okay! I sort of figured something came up," she reassured him. He turned towards her and gave her a smile that was so sweet Ladybug couldn't breathe.

"Thank you," he said. She didn't miss how he scooted a bit closer to her.

"Y-you're welcome." Ah great, she was stuttering again. Maybe he didn't notice....?

"Are you alright, Marinette?" Nope. He definitely did.

"Uh-huh, fine!" She grinned, but she could tell that he wasn't convinced. Luckily, he seemed to spare her from further embarrassment and dropped the matter.

"You know, this is the first time I'm spending July 14th with someone," he murmured, his eyes on the fireworks.

"Really?" Ladybug whispered. She wasn't sure why she was surprised. Sure, it had been several years since Adrien became Chat Noir, but Gabriel still had a tight hold as his son. She never spent Bastille Day with him before as Ladybug. She always figured Chat Noir would be surrounded by his civilian friends.

There had been a lot of things she had thought about Chat Noir that turned out to be wrong.

Including the idea that Ladybug could never be in love with him. She already had a small crush on him before their identity reveal, but now knowing he was Adrien? Oh, she was an absolute hopeless case. But the thing was, she was about 82% sure that Adrien was in the same boat. After she had told him her name, he told her how unsurprised he was, how he had actually suspected Marinette was Ladybug before, and he continued to flirt with her like normal. Could she have possibly been lucky enough for Chat Noir to still be in love with her? She certainly hoped so. There were only so many soft gazes and lingering touches she could take before her word vomit revealed her feelings.

After talking it over with Tikki, Marinette had decided: she was going to ask out Adrien Chat Noir Agreste tonight. And now he was here in front of her and he was so close to her and it was the perfect time and-.

"Yeah, I'm really glad it was with you," he said, oh so casual as if he didn't just change her insides into goo. How in the world was she supposed to have a deep conversation with this boy if he kept on saying unbelievably sweet things to her?

"I'm glad I'm with you, too." Taking a deep breath, she worked up the courage to place her hand on his. Sure, he was Adrien, but he was also Chat Noir. She could tell him anything.

"Really?" he breathed, his eyes wide. There was a flush on his face, one that made Ladybug want to laugh.

"Yes, really, you dork. Don't you know how much you mean to me?" The words came out easily. Turns out, when it was under the guise of a joke, Ladybug could speak to Adrien just fine.

"It's always nice to hear," he said, glancing down at their hands with a smile on his face. Ladybug's heart twinged. Adrien hardly got affection in his civilian life, not with his father being... his father. He had no idea how loved he really was.

Well, Ladybug was going to do what she did best and she was going to fix that.

"Well, I guess I'll start telling you that more often. You're my best friend, you know." She bumped her shoulder against his. It wasn't a love confession, but she could work up to that. She would work up to that.

"And you're mine, both in and out of the mask. Don't tell Nino," he joked. She laughed, she loved it when he was like this. When he was happy and joking and laughing with her.

"I won't as long as you don't tell Alya," she teased.

"God, can you imagine her reaction if she knew we were Ladybug and Chat Noir? She would freak! 'Oh my God, you two owe me 10,000 interviews!'" The two of them laughed, Ladybug's heart fluttering as butterflies filled her stomach.

"Then she'd promptly plan our wedding," she muttered, not intending for him to hear. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), Chat Noir had enhanced hearing.

"And I'll happily help her. She'll be your maid of honor, Nino will be my best man. Our wedding colors will include pink, of course, and green! Or maybe blue? Or red and black?" Chat Noir mused to himself. Ladybug was torn between laughing again or kissing him silly. He was planning out their wedding as if it were inevitable. At this point, maybe it was.

Ladybug gulped, summoning all of her confidence, and let the lava bubble to the surface.

"Pink and blue would look too much like a baby shower, pink and green works best for us. Trust me, I uh," she couldn't lose her nerve now, "I would know."

Chat Noir's face snapped towards her. She opted to look at the fireworks instead, maybe the light from them would hide the blush on her face.

"O-oh?" he wheezed. Had she flustered him that badly? How cute. "And just how would you know?"

"I-."

'I love you.'

"I would make my own dress," she said instead. She cursed herself for chickening out, but maybe this was good! It was much smoother than word vomit. "We'd have a passion fruit cake, it's your favorite after all."

"Sounds like you already have it all planned out," Chat Noir purred, leaning into her space. Seems like he had recovered.

"I do," she whispered into the night. Maybe the fireworks drowned her out. She wasn't sure if that was better or worse than him hearing her.

"You do?" he whispered, just as quiet as her. She worked up the nerve to look at him. She glanced over at him, her breath leaving her. He was staring at her as if she were the fireworks. As if she was the only beautiful thing in the world. As if she had just offered him the universe on a platter.

She could only nod.

"I do."

"Tell me, please," he begged, his voice coming out as a prayer. Well, how could she not oblige when he talked to her like that?

"It would be a smaller ceremony, all of our friends would be there, but no press. Adrien Agreste's marriage would be a private affair. A night for just us two. I go back and forth on whether or not I'm designing your suit. Our first dance would be to that song we danced to at Chloe's party. When we cut the cake we'd promise to be nice, but both of us would shove it in each other's faces." Once she started, she couldn't stop. So much for not having word vomit. But it seemed like with every word, Chat Noir's eyes grew wider and wider. "Recently, I changed a couple of things. The cards that told our friends where to sit would have puns on them, mainly cat puns. Our flowers would be red roses, not pink tulips like I had thought. Your hair would be messier, like how it is now. If I'm designing your suit, it would have a nod to your Chat Noir outfit. And uh." She bit her lip, a bit embarrassed.

"And?" he breathed, his eyes searching hers.

"And instead of becoming Marinette Agreste, you'd become Adrien Dupain-Cheng," she finished. His mouth dropped open in a little 'o.'

"Marinette," he breathed her name like it was his everything as he leaned down. He was so close, close enough that she could feel his breath on her lips. "If you don't want me, tell me now."

"Please," she whispered, and his lips were on hers.

Fireworks exploded. Both over Paris and inside of Ladybug.

He drank her in as if she was the answer to all of his questions. She poured all of her love into the embrace. She put her hands around his neck, pulling him ever closer to her. He kissed her with everything he had, she eagerly returned it. He meant everything to her, it was about time that he knew it.

"I love you so much. I always have. Ladybug has had my heart since the day I met her and Marinette has always been special to me. If it wasn't for Ladybug, it would've been Marinette. Until suddenly, it was Marinette and I was crushing on her but still madly in love with Ladybug, and I was so torn between these two amazing girls. Then you two turned out to be the same girl and hoped with all of my heart that you returned my feelings and-."

She laughed. Looked like she wasn't the only one who had a case of word vomit. At the stunned look on Chat Noir's face, she quickly stopped herself.

"No, no! I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing because the two of us," her voice turned soft, "the two of us are really made for each other. I'm madly in love with you, too, Adrien."

"I mean, I kinda hoped so considering you planned out the entirety of our wedding," he chuckled. His smile turned a bit bashful. "Everything about it sounds like a dream, especially the Adrien Dupain-Cheng part." He winked at her, and Ladybug had to swallow another laugh.

Oh how she loved him. And he finally knew! She could walk on clouds, she could take over the world, if Hawkmoth showed up, she was sure she wouldn't stop grinning the entire fight.

"Oh? Well you know you're allowed to change anything that doesn't sound appealing, it's your wedding too, you know." She poked his shoulder.

"I know, the only thing that's not appealing is the fact it's so far away. But we could always change that," he sang. Ladybug blushed.

"How about you become my boyfriend first? Could you imagine if Alya and Nino found out we were engaged before we even started dating?" Ladybug bit her lip, smiling.

"They'd probably-. Wait. Did you just ask me out?" Chat Noir blinked, wide-eyed. Okay, that got Ladybug to laugh.

"Looks like I did, kitty-cat, now what are you going to do about that?" She leaned in, trying to ignore her inner screaming.

"Say yes. 100 times yes." He tackled her with a hug, Ladybug let out a shriek.

"Chat!" she laughed as he nuzzled into her.

"Yes My Lady?" he purred into her neck.

"You're such a dork," she whispered, burying her face into his hair.

"Your dork, though, officially." He pulled away just far enough for Ladybug to see the Cheshire grin on his face.

"Yep! No take backs."

"Like I'd ever take back how much I love you," he muttered, his voice soft. Ladybug's heart skipped a beat. A large blush came over her face. Chat Noir only laughed, that traitor.

"Meanie, get off of me." She shoved him away, sitting back up properly.

"Bugaboo," he whined, draping himself over her. "I'm sorry." He kissed her cheek, which made Ladybug only blush harder.

"Y-you!" she sputtered.

"Me." He only grinned, simultaneously endearing and infuriating. But Chat Noir was happy, and how could Ladybug ever complain about that.

"I love you," she said again, just because she could. It was Chat Noir's turn to blush. "Wow, you can dish it out, but you really can't take it, can you?"

"Not when it comes to you," he squeaked, hiding his face behind his hands.

"Oh my poor kitty, it's too bad I can't see your face or else I'd give you a kiss but-." she sighed, noticing how Chat Noir tore his hands away and puckered up. Ladybug giggled to herself, before she gave him a quick peck.

"That makes it official, this is the best French National Day ever. In the history of ever. Today will go down in history as the day Ladybug kissed Chat Noir." He nodded, perfectly satisfied with his conclusion. Ladybug snorted.

"Yeah, because nothing else is significant about July 14th at all."

"Nope! I've never even heard of Bastille, all I know is this is the day My Lady kissed me." She shook her head, he was such a dork. She loved him so much.

"At least our anniversary will be easy to remember," she sighed, leaning her head against his shoulder. The fireworks were still going off, every boom mimicking the excitement in her heart.

"And every year we're going to kiss during the fireworks, no take backs," Chat said, leaning his head on top of hers.

"Of course not, that sounds amazing." A lovesick sigh escaped her, but Ladybug couldn't find it within herself to care. Not when she was with the love of her life. The person who meant the absolute world to her. The person she had been in love with for years. The person she very much wanted to marry, even if their wedding was years away.

It was possible now, and the thought alone made Ladybug want to spontaneously combust. But Adrien would probably be heartbroken if that happened, and she could never break his heart.

"You know what else sounds amazing?" Chat Noir began, and Ladybug didn't need to look at him to know he was grinning.

"Hmm?"

"Having karaoke at our wedding!" Ladybug pulled away from their embrace to look at him. Despite the grin on his face, there was an apprehension in his eyes that told Ladybug he was completely serious. She smiled.

"Karaoke sounds nice," she said, placing her head back on his shoulder. "I bet Alix and Kim would keep trying to one-up each other, Rose would obviously crush it with her vocals, you would serenade me."

"You're damn right I would."

"Karaoke, a dance party." Ladybug ticked off each thing on her fingers. "Anything else?"

"Can we have croissants? Please?" he asked, bringing out his 'pleading cat' voice.

"Yes, we can have croissants. I'm sure my parents will be more than happy to cater," she said. Part of her couldn't believe how the night had turned out. She had just hoped she'd be able to ask out Adrien, now here she was planning her wedding with him!

But in a weird way, it only felt fitting. They had both waited years for this, and she honestly couldn't see herself with anyone else. No one else could even begin to compete with the love she had for Chat Adrien Agreste Noir. Maybe she had a slight crush on Luka years ago, but Chat Noir was her partner. Both in sickness and in health.

'Whoa, slow down there Marinette, you two aren't married, yet,' The rational side of her brain said. The rest of Marinette told it to shut up.

"I mean your father was pretty intent on me becoming his son-in-law that one time I came over for brunch," he teased. Marinette groaned, of course he would bring that up now.

"You be quiet. I thought you realized I was Ladybug and I freaked," she admitted, grumbling.

"So you mean you weren't actually in love with Chat Noir?" The insecurity in his voice broke Ladybug's heart.

"That would come years later, I was still too hung up on Adrien Agreste to realize I was crushing hard on my partner." She shrugged, trying to keep her voice light.

"Marinette," he whispered, taking his head off of hers. She looked up at him, his eyes were shining. A firework went off in the distance, but Ladybug had stopped paying attention to them. She'd much rather focus on the boy in front of her.

The boy who was kissing her again. Ladybug didn't think she would ever get used to the feeling of his lips against hers. It felt right, like everything had finally aligned and he was suddenly all she wanted. As if things were always meant to be this way. And knowing how Chat Noir and Ladybug were always meant to be important to one another, perhaps that was a real possibility.

Ladybug might have not believed in soulmates before, but she always hoped they existed. Now she knew they really did exist, and Chat Noir was hers. They pulled back from each other, grinning. Fireworks kept going off, Parisians cheered below. And as Paris celebrated their liberty, Ladybug celebrated her own. She was free to love Adrien Agreste with all her heart, no more holding back.

He was right, this was the best Bastille Day ever.

What was it I said during another one of these prompt months? Oh yeah, I'll heal your heart after breaking it.  -Colorado
