ACT TWO ━━━ CHAPTER TEN,
❝ happy birthday, james! ❞
━━━━ MARCH 10, 1989.
◤ HYDRA BASE, SIBERIA.
𝓙ames Bucky Barnes was one of the Hydra soldiers who got their minds wiped, completely forgetting everything in his past.
Every time he would remember one little thing, may it be someone that was associated with him before he got his mind completely shattered or short flashes of certain moments, Hydra always removed them again.
It was a repeating process; he remembers, they wipe it, then they freeze him, they unfreeze him in a few years, he becomes their little slave once again.
He never got a break. Whenever they needed him, he was always there to do whatever they asked. Otherwise, he would be punished.
But on the morning of March 10, 1989, James remembered something.
Kaileena Stark looked across her cell to where James was. The Winter Soldier was sitting on the ground, his back leaning against his bed as he looked at the ground with a frown on his face.
"What are you thinking about so hard, over there?" James' head snapped up to look at the young woman.
Over the past two years and two months, the two of them have gotten closer. Whether James liked it or not, Elena was one of those people who are easy to like so it really wasn't a surprise when he let his guard down whenever he talked to her.
James shrugged, "I remember something." He told her which made Elena look at him with slightly wide eyes.
"You're joking," she stated, smiling when he shook his head no. "That's amazing, James! What is it?"
The man with a metal arm pulled the tips of his mouth back, "Nothing much."
Elena rolled her chocolate-colored eyes, "Don't give me that shit, Barnes. I've known you long enough to know that it's never "nothing much" . . ."
James hated how she could basically read him like a book, he's even sure that Elena knows him better than he knows himself, which might be true since the Stark hasn't been mind-wiped.
"Besides, this month, my powers are knowing whenever someone is lying or not. I'm like a living lie detector. Pretty cool, right?" Elena asked, scrunching up her nose cheekily.
James chuckled softly which made Elena smile triumphantly.
Before Elena came into his miserable life, James never smiled nor did he laugh. She made him do things that he never once did in his time in Hydra, she was basically his savior.
"Fine. It's my birthday today," James admitted.
Elena's mouth slightly parted in surprise, he has never once remembered when his birthday was in the past 2 years so this was a first.
"Wait, really?"
James nodded.
"Happy birthday, James!" Elena exclaimed, her eyes sparkling in excitement.
James gave her a small smile, "Thanks, Len . . . but I don't think it's that much of an achievement. It's not like I get to celebrate it." He said sadly making Elena's face drop.
Elena gave him a look of sympathy, James was always so negative and she was the total opposite. The female Stark lifted her finger in the air when she got an idea, James lifted his eyebrow at her when she stood up and turned so her back was facing him.
After a moment of her looking for something, she turned around with an object in her hand. It was a glove.
James furrowed his eyebrows, "What's that?"
"It's a glove, so you can cover your metal hand," Elena answered. "I remember how you always complained about how it bothered you so much since it's so cold, so I made you this glove a few weeks ago when you were training. I was going to give it to you before but I forgot about it, so, I think it's the perfect time to give this to you since it's your birthday."
By the end of her explanation, James stood a few inches away from the glass wall in his cell. Tears were forming in his eyes at the thought of someone actually caring about him.
Elena frowned when she saw how his eyes were getting glassy, the girl lowered her arms and stepped closer to the glass wall on her cell.
"What's wrong, James? Do you not like it? I-"
"No, no. I love it, Elena." James cut her off, shaking his head. "It's just . . . no one has ever cared for me since I was captured by Hydra, until you."
Elena lowered her head, feeling bad for him.
She knew how he got captured by Hydra, she also knew him as Captain America's best friend. She knew that this was the guy that was bestfriends with the American hero that her father would talk about all the time. She knew he was Bucky Barnes, a former Sergeant in the 107th back in World War 2. She knew who he was, but he didn't.
She lifted her head to look at him in the eye, a tear going down her cheek. "I care for you, James. I'm always gonna be here for you, I promise."
"Always?"
Elena nodded, a sad smile on her lips. "Always."
END OF FLASHBACK ━━━━
━━━━ PRESENT DAY . . .
◤ MARCH 10.
In a small worn-down apartment in Bucharest, Romania, Bucky Barnes took off the dark gray glove that he was wearing on his left arm, his metal arm.
The male clutched the item in his hands, he stared at it with an unreadable look on his face.
"Happy birthday, James!" her mesmerizing voice echoed in his mind.
Today was March 10, 2015.
It was his birthday.
And Kaileena Stark wasn't present to celebrate it with him.
Bucky looked away from the glove, remembering the day she gave it to him as a birthday present. Remembering how she promised him that she would always be with him.
"I'm always gonna be here for you, James."
Lie.
Tears gathered up in his eyes as he stood up angrily and picked up the small coffee table, then he threw it to the wall, making the table break into a hundred pieces.
Bucky let out a painful scream, letting all of his emotions out.
"Always," she said to him.
What a lie.
Bucky started to pace around the small room, his breathing uneasy as he started to hyperventilate. The Barnes male stopped pacing and stood still, trying to calm his breathing with tears falling down his cheeks.
He ran his flesh hand through his shoulder-length hair and down his face, his palm resting on the side of his neck.
"What's wrong, James? Do you not like it? I-"
Bucky shook his head as he got flashes of what happened that day.
"No, no. I love it, Elena."
It was true. It reminded him so much of her that he still wore it 'till this day.
After a while of focusing on his breathing, he finally stopped hyperventilating. Tears still fell down his cheeks like a waterfall, Bucky didn't even bother to wipe them off.
It was like he was frozen, like he couldn't move, like he couldn't do anything but stare at the glove that was now on the floor, mixed together with the dust and dirt.
"You said "always" but where are you now when I need you the most?" One more tear fell from his steel-blue eyes as he whispered those words, his voice cracking.
Bucky couldn't take it anymore as he fell to the ground and sobbed his eyes out.
Not knowing that in a small cell in a Hydra base that was in Sokovia, a brunette was thinking of the same memory that happened 26 years ago.
━━━━ HYDRA BASE . . .
◤ SOKOVIA.
𝓘n a small cell, Kaileena Stark sat on the ground with her back leaning against her bed.
She stared at the wall with an emotionless look on her face.
It was James' birthday today.
And she wasn't there to celebrate it with him.
"Fine. It's my birthday today," the sound of his voice filled her chaotic mind.
She pulled her legs closer to her body and wrapping her arms around it to keep it in place, her chin resting on her knees.
She remembers that day like it was yesterday. She remembers the look on his face when she promised him that she would always be with him.
She lied.
She wasn't there for him when he needed her most.
Because right now, she was sat in a cell, captured by Hydra for the second time. She sat there with a broken heart and a damaged mind, unable to escape like last time. She was helplessly useless.
Kaileena sniffled and buried her face between her knees, her long hair covering her face.
"It's just . . . no one has ever cared for me since I was captured by Hydra, until you."
She loved him, yet she left without him.
She promised him always yet that 'always' turned into nothing but lies.
She was to blame.
She broke his cold heart.
She was the villain in people's stories.
"You're not the villain in mine," a soft voice spoke making Kaileena's head snap up to the cell that was across from hers, on the right.
"What?"
"I said, you aren't the villain in my story," Wanda Maximoff repeated. "I'm sorry, I'm still trying to not invade your privacy and read your thoughts." The teenage girl immediately apologized.
Kaileena shook her head, a small smile making its way on her lips. "It's fine, Wanda."
Wanda nodded, still a little bit guilty that she read her friend's mind without permission.
Neither of them spoke for a moment, Pietro Maximoff laid on his bed with his arms behind his head as he glanced between the two females.
Pietro noticed the sad look on the brunette's face and frowned, "What's wrong, princess?"
Kaileena chuckled at the nickname. Ever since they met, Pietro has done nothing but flirt with her, ignoring how she was roughly 29 years older than him. His only excuse was that 'age doesn't matter' and 'but you're only 45 mentally, you're 25 physically'.
"Nothing much," she replied, instantly getting a wave of deja vu.
"Don't lie to us, Elena. I mean, you haven't even told us your last name yet," Wanda reminded her which made Kaileena tense slightly.
The pressure of coming up with a messed-up lie and getting burning gazes from the two siblings made Kaileena stress out.
Quickly saying the first name she thought in her head, she said it out loud. "Barnes."
"Barnes?" Pietro questioned, tilting his head in confusion.
Kaileena nodded, "Yup. That's my last name, Barnes. Elena Barnes."
"Right," Wanda nodded, a little doubtful of her answer.
Kaileena's face morphed into an offended expression as she looked at the younger twin, "Are you saying that you don't believe me?"
"I don't know you that well, you might be lying," the witch responded.
"Good point," Kaileena mused, nodding her head in agreement.
In the past few months, Kaileena has formed a sibling relationship with the female Maximoff. Pietro was just something else, he was attractive but he was a minor. She didn't want to catch a case.
"I guess you'll just have to trust me, then," Kaileena said, chuckling a bit.
Trust. Did they trust her?
Who would trust someone who lied about their last name?
The Maximoff twins did.
But that's the thing, they didn't know she lied.
Like many people have said, "Never trust a Stark."
