From the beginning to the end, the Castellan Coven has been cursed from the moment they inhale their first breath of life to their last breath when they stare into death's eyes and stare at their cruel smile, mocking the witches that this is their doom, and nothing can save them from their fate.

Sage Castellan held the belief that every wrong thing in her life happened because of the curse that simply takes and takes and leaves nothing behind but a decaying corpse and a wound that would never heal. She would attempt to fill the wound with anything that could fill the gaping hole, but the hole would forever remain a wound that would never heal, and darkness tied to her name—forever branded that her fate is death, and she cannot escape death.

Sage Castellan is cursed.

Assumably she's been cursed since conception and escaping her mother's womb with a battle cry of pain. Flailing limbs and bald fists, her body shaking with sobs as her body was pressed against her mother's own shaking body, a child having a child. Both are doomed at the start, a mother at seventeen with the responsibility of having a newborn with fate every other Castellan witch is assigned with the sentence of pain and death. Maybe every time she sees her mother, she sees tear streaks on her face with a forced smile as she believes everything will be alright if you don't use magic and force a smile but, in the end, death always comes to claim you.

Perhaps all the anger and fury began when her mother chose death over life, and anger began to consume her from the inside out. Nothing could change that death began to pick people around her, starting with her friends and finally her coven. The anger began to manifest into armor around her heart as she arrived at the scene of her home being burned down to ashes, hearing the silence of her coven's magic and not knowing who lived or who died, with tears running down her cheeks as Sheriff Noah Stilinski told Sage and her cousin, Max Castellan that the only survivors of the house fires from both Castellan and Hale houses were their grandmother, Ramonda Castellan and Peter Hale but every individual that lived and breathe in their home are gone.

If you were to ask Sage when her anger and hatred for Derek Hale began, she would likely give you mixed responses. However, all of her answers trace back to when their homes were reduced to ashes, taking with them the families who relied on those houses for safety. Her deep-seated hatred and anger truly started to take shape a year after the fire, when her grandmother passed away after a long coma, her heart finally giving out.

Her anger and hatred likely stemmed from seeing Derek and Kate kissing under the bleachers. She tried to reason with Derek and expressed her frustrations about the fact that Kate was in her twenties while he was only sixteen, but he never listened. Perhaps she stopped listening to him when her entire coven perished in the flames of her own making.

As the years pass, time feels stagnant. People grow older, but everything around them remains unchanged. Nothing was different after the fires that destroyed the Hale and Castellan families, and Sage almost believed it would stay that way. Then, she received news of a body discovered in the woods. Suddenly, she found herself face-to-face with the man she thought she would never see again—especially not when he was begging for help to stop the alpha. Despite her anger and fear, and the strong urge to flee the situation, she reluctantly agreed to assist him. Perhaps if she had been wiser, she wouldn't have found herself in the complicated mess that was Derek Hale.

IV. AUTHOR'S NOTE!
WELCOME TO LADY LAZARUS!! After months of writing a summary and telling myself I would publish it the next week, and I end up not doing...HERE WE ARE!! Honestly this summary shouldn't have taken forever but the struggle was real when writing this. Anyways, I first created this fic out of spite due to the fact that majority of Derek Hale fics are with him having love interests that are minors. Look I don't care if some of the fics have the love interests being 18, that character is still in high school and those fics shouldn't be as romanticized. After seeing all those fics, I decided Derek needs a book that his love interest is ACTUALLY his age.

This book follows the events of the show (season 1 to season 6) but it also has elements of AU with Sage having her own storyline that somewhat involves Derek but it also involves her her own trauma that would be explored with being a witch and the whole culture surrounding that. There would also be slight changes that happened in canon but it wouldn't entirely impact canon.
