Lacy, 2024.

One summer they are 8 years old and the young blonde boy sits on his best friend's porch in the beating sun. He has uno cards in his hand and he waits for him and his brother to come back outside.
He sees a girl around his age grinning, running up to the door. She sees him and says hello and his eyebrow quirks up because he's never seen her before. He asks who she is and he learns that she's his best friend's cousin. They shake hands and to this day he remembers how soft her touch was.

Two summers later they are 10 years old and she cries because she dropped her ice cream on the sidewalk.
He was confused because she got vanilla when he knows her favorite is strawberry.
As her cousin tells her it's okay the boy taps her shoulder and hands her a strawberry ice cream cone and she hugs him. To this day he remembers how warm she feels.

Three summers later they are 13 years old and she lays next to him on a beach towel. It's night time and they look up at the stars.
She explains to him what her best friend from home taught her about constellations but he doesn't hear a word she says because he's distracted by her pinky brushing up against his. To this day he remembers the electric feeling he gets from her touch.

Last summer they were 15 years old and they throw a party. He comes out into the backyard and he is heartbroken. She kisses another boy.
They weren't together and he knows that. He knows she sees him a friend but he wishes that boy was him. He becomes distant with her because he doesn't know how to feel and now she's yelling at him. To this day he knows that now matter what he will always worship her.

Every summer he stands on the porch waiting for her and every summer she shuts the car door and runs into his arms before she even looks at anyone else. That's the best part of his year. This year after that argument and after the death in the family something is different. She shuts the car door but she's in the driver's seat and her father isn't there. She doesn't run to him.            We'll always have summer.

     She was a girl who's mood changed with seasons. She looked forward to the end of May that was filled with freedom. Where she would run out of the school building and come home to pack her suitcase. But she'd always pack her homework because she can't miss the annual homework burning ceremony with JJ Maybank. Soleil Routledge was a summer girl. She always will be. She loved the peach and honey in the air, ice cream melting on the pavement, and sweat glistening in the sunlight. That Island was her sweet escape, her happy place. She dreamed about that house and the sound of her friend's laughter kissing the smoky air as they sat around the bonfire.

Soleil loved her father's side of the family more than life itself. Her mother wasn't the affectionate type she didn't give hugs or forehead kisses she gave rage and fire that erupted from her throat and burned her daughter's life to a crisp. She was strict about grades and her getting into a good college which was only based on the underlying fear of Soleil becoming her. Her mother's dream would turn into a nightmare. One of the many reasons why she loved this island so was because her mother was never there. Just her, her uncle, her dad, and her cousins. And of course the kids loved bothering their aunt June whenever she wasn't working.

When JJ Maybank met Soleil, the world shook. He felt an underlying pain in his ribs that he didn't understand. But it wasn't a bad pain at all. As he got older, JJ realized how much he loved the day that Soleil came to town. He's make sure to get up early a take a longer shower than usual. Scratching his soapy scalp with every curve of his nails and scrubbing every inch of his body raw. All just so when she hugged him she'd say you smell really good. When he saw the car pull up and the car door opened he felt a burst in his stomach and he wanted to throw up.

His longing for her was a leash and he was a dog. He got tangled in that leash and his need grew teeth. JJ loves like a dog, growling at strangers and following behind his owner at all times. Soleil means sun and she burned him. JJ wished he didn't yell the last time he saw her. He wished he didn't swallow the words he most desperately wanted to say. He wished he choked on them and spat them back out. But Soleil constantly talked about how he was like family to her. That he was her best friend. And that transported him to his bed where he would lay in the dark and silence and then scream into his pillow.

The death of her uncle punched everyone in the mouth and made them bleed. Her cousin John B never wanted to admit he was dead but everyone else around him had already accepted it. June didn't have enough money to support two teenage boys but was still fighting DCS everyday to get custody. Death and the vanishing of Soleil's father wasn't going to keep her from going to that island. She put on her seatbelt and drove away from her mother and her home. When her seatbelt unbuckled and she steps out of the car, girlhood dies and Soleil becomes her mother's daughter.
