Chapter Fifty-One
* * *
"SHE ATTACKED SAGE?!" What had attempted to be a calm retelling of the incident between Sage and Lexi had immediately turned into an uproar, it was clear that the Greene daughter was in deep shit. Especially when it was explained to Chris, who needed to see it in the eyes of a punishing Alpha—But it was Fiona who was outraged that spoke first.
"Hi, FiFi." Sage said loud enough so the camera could pick up her voice, which caused Remus to look at her healing nose. Being pregnant was causing a delay in her healing, or so says Kenzie that is.
But with the look her mate was giving her, she sighed and returned the ice pack back onto her face. "Sage, do you have any sort of punishments you prefer? I do not tolerate this behavior. Rest assured she will be facing the consequences when she returns back to—"
"Lexi finds her mate here, I know Caleb doesn't want to leave Crescent Moon..." Chris did a quick check to see who the little Luna was talking about.
And Elwood was sure a familiar name to the East coast packs.
"That's hardly saved her from a death wish, Sage."
"I take tiers away, not Enforcer anymore. She work for title again, Elwood name not help her." Remus caught his friend's thinking face and he smirked with a shrug to follow.
"My Luna can be brutal when she wants to be." He boasted, causing Sage to move the ice pack away so he had a full view of her sticking out her tongue in defiance.
Careful, I can end this meeting right now.
Wolf gets excited when I do that, why?
Remus couldn't handle explaining what he and his wolf thought of when she did that, and thus he rubbed his eyes and tried to listen to the rest of Silver Tail's apology.
The Alpha's getting horny, Sage. Careful.
Hor-ny? What's that?
Remember that book you were reading, about blowjobs?
Yeah, and then I tried it on Remmy and he liked it—Oh. Do you think he wants me too?
This is above my pay grade hun, but all my males love it. But maybe save until after your nose isn't hurting anymore.
Horny means he wants to—
Horny just means he wants to mate, Alpha's are known to be extra horny.
Can females be horn-ney?
Horny. It's a slang word hun, and what do you think? You don't crave your brooding mate? I mean look at him, he's not ugly.
While Sage was enjoying Darius and his ability to explain everything, Remus finished up the meeting and Fiona made Sage promise to call later when she felt better.
The Alpha pushed his chair back and rose up to his feet, coming to bend down just before his mate. His eyes softened as he needed to calm himself and his wolf.
"Can you lick again?" Sage asked, and Remus chuckled. Out of everything she was not afraid to request it, so he threw off his shirt and made quick work of undressing to be able to shift for her.
Does it still hurt, munchkin?
Little, cold pack helps.
He rose up to his hind legs and started licking up the better half of her face, course it made him very playful in hearing her giggles and squeals.
And after hearing that on the other side of the door, Eli felt the need to knock before entering the Alpha's office.
You can come in.
Sage whispered, but Eli laughed on the other end of the wall. "Thanks Luna, but I think I'll give you another five minutes on that one!" He yelled out, and Remus growled to the male's voice in defense, Eli had made the right choice in not coming in.
Remus' halted his licking to keep his eyes planted onto the door, or did until his mate cupped his face and pulled his attention away.
"You fluffy horny wolfie, you have work to do."
I don't know what's worse, you calling me fluffy or you can tell I'm horny.
She hummed with a bright smile on her face, and while she thought it would be a great idea of letting him shift back and see what they could do in five minutes. A wave of tiredness hit her rather unexpectedly, though Remus was aware that her healing would pick up eventually.
Course he wished it happened later, involving plans that involved a bath with his beautiful mate. But as of right now, he was having to bite back all the things he wanted to do with her until after the pup, but it'd be worth it.
Goddess, it was all worth it.
Sage soon fell asleep on the office's couch, it wasn't the first time she passed out like this. So he shifted back to skin and started to collect a light blanket and a few pillows from the closet—Her's specifically.
Remus had just managed to pull up jeans when Eli knocked again, but this time didn't hesitate to come in as they were indeed on a time restraint for the council's bullshit end-of-term pack report.
The Alpha caught that his Beta didn't dare breath through his nose once entering into the room, and Remus couldn't help but roll his eyes. "Lexi is receiving a call tonight, she might be returning to be 'reformed,' or that's what Chris said in a polite way." Eli and him worked well, and Jack came in not long after and smirked to see Sage curled up on the couch.
"How long has she been out?" Jack said nicking his head off towards the Luna, and Eli smirked.
"Alpha tired her out." He teased, but Remus growled in warning. "Nah, she's healing...Kenzie warned us this would happen. Pregnant she-wolves heal differently. It's finally starting to pick up." Eli took a small sniff of the air and breathed in a sigh of relief, wolves were open to any and all scents, the last thing he needed was to smell what he could be doing with his own mate.
While the males quietly worked a few feet away, Sage's phone began to ring and it earned an annoyed grumble as she tried to move away from the noise.
And when she saw that it was Jade, she huffed. "Who is it, hun?"
"Jade." Eli frowned at his Alpha—As Remus hadn't taken his advice in just allowing Sage to tell her friend.
The strain of lying made Sage distant to the Luna, and it was clear it was affecting her greatly.
So Remus went ahead and answer it for her. "Hey Jade, Sage is taking a nap—We had some issues with a new she-wolf."
"What?! That's awful, what happened? Could I help at all?" Remus said in not so many words to disclose Sage's pregnancy, but the sadness started to swell when Remus ended the phone call.
"Can't talk to Jade anymore..." She whispered, her eyes burning in an attempt to stop the tears. But Remus shook his head, "That's not true munchkin, you can still—"
"Can't tell her fixing pup room, can't ask questions and I can't—I can't keep lying." Her mate didn't have much of a chance to tell her otherwise as she pulled the blanket away and left the room, leaving her phone with him as well.
"Sir, maybe it wouldn't be—" A growl silenced him, Remus knew it was a lot for Sage to keep quiet. And even with telling Fiona and Mary, it only helped so much.
"Sir...The council isn't out to take her away, you're mated, she's our Luna...Wouldn't saying that she's carrying your pup help keep her here?" Eli brought up a good point, that Sage would not be ordered away from Crescent Moon.
But it didn't change the fact that Remus had enemies, and by the look of it, Jack agreed.
"I dunno man, I feel like Eclipse or other packs might gain more if we don't have an heir." There it was, the one thing that made his blood boil quicker than anything.
"Both Chris and Issac agreed they'd do the same."
"But Mystic Grimm isn't an enemy anymore, Remus. We're not at war with them—Hell, you went to visit for a week. Do you still think Harlow is waiting to attack?" Jack hadn't really been prepared for Eli to ask that, but he also wasn't prepared for the lack of response on his Alpha's behalf.
With the looming silence, Eli ended it by dropping his notebook onto the table, he was done for the day after not agreeing with what his Alpha was saying. Which unfortunately left Jack to be left in the middle, and an expected glance cross his path and caused him to sigh.
"I do understand being careful Alpha, but just Mystic Grimm? If you asked they wouldn't tell anyone."
"I can't take that risk, Jack. It's giving me goosebumps just thinking about it. Sage has her intuition and I need to listen to my gut." The Delta bowed his head and nodded, it was making the Alpha uncomfortable.
He had a pup on the way, that was stressful enough to think about.
"The pup's coming soon anyway, and then when you're in fur we have to inform—"
"No. Not even then, Issac and Chris will be helping you and Eli with everything. I don't like the whispers they're hearing."
"That was just—"
"It isn't just rumors, Sage being the highest-ranking Luna put a target on her back. The next Luna meeting she'll have to either keep it or give it up."
"The pup won't be old enough, she doesn't have to go." What he said was true, she had a free pass. But did that mean it automatically went to the second-ranking?
"Does Sage know she's ranked number one?"
"No. And her wolf doesn't need to think she has to defend the title and worry about the pup." Jack nodded in agreement and remained silent about the previously discussed topic.
While Eli ended up joining Sage, sitting with her as they watched the pup's train out in the field. When Blake wasn't guarding Sage or training with the reformed, she went to see if Luke needed any help with the pups.
Sage knew that there was something else bothering her mate, it was why he was working overtime—She wasn't that unaware of the difference, but she also knew that Eli or anybody else wouldn't tell her either.
She needed to find out herself.
And of course, who else would she ask other than her Charge? He told her a few of his 'war stories' on how he and his friends used to steal from stores and all that, it sounded strange where she was sitting. But collectively, they didn't make enough money for the basic necessities to live.
Again, sounded strange to her at first, but he said he rather be starving with freedom than fed and caged. And she realized that she agreed with him, especially after having a taste of freedom.
"Wish I can help, wolves are getting tak-en..."
"The council's working on it, or so they say. Feels like all these higher-ups like to take their time and pass the laws with votes." Sage didn't understand this type of government, but she did recall that everyone needed to agree with raging a war.
As it was clear on the end of Randall attacking for no other reason than because he could.
With the regular routine of doing yoga and taking the walk to the training grounds, she caught the near end of Lexi sparing against two other females.
"Lexi okay?" She questioned Luke, and the man smirked. "Breaking the cockiness out of her soon, her dad was a very decorated Enforcer in Silver Tail."
"Decorated? Like Christmas tree?" Her connection was adorable but it wasn't all that right.
"You remember those awards the council gave out for the games at the Luna meeting? Like that, but the Alpha could award them if they do something worthy of it. Dad thought you were going to get one for the first Rogue attack you were here for."
"Remmy give out metals?"
"I mean...We kinda lost that here. But Lexi is definitely learning that nobody cares who she is." Sage nodded along, admiring the female's form.
When she earned the submission of her two opponents, her eyes turned around as she felt a new gaze on her. And she was met with a smile on the Luna's face.
"I like her."
"Sage, you like everyone."
"Not true. I don't like Grumpy Remus...And I don't like council, or the mean Lunas I meet." Luke only meant it as a bit of a tease, there were a few people who made the list—But he was surprised Lexi wasn't one of them.
"I make friends with Laura after she challenged me, and Laura isn't...Cocky." Her brother grinned as she managed to find the right word, so much so that he pulled her into his side and ruffled her hair.
"Lu? I have to ask you..."
"Yeah? What's up?"
"I talk to Remmy, I want you to be godfather of my pup." She said leaning further into his side, but with his lack of response she peeked up.
"Lu?"
"R-really?" He croaked, it was a very high honor to be a godfather of one of the higher tiers, usually one of the godparents would remain above their station or to the Beta's family. But the werewolf tradition of two sets of godparents allowed Luke and Elenor to be the godparents to the Alpha heir.
"Yeah, I talk with Remmy and he says it's good idea. You want to be godfather? I have to ask Ellie."
"Of course, thank you hun it's...Thank you." He didn't want to make Sage's every action seem like an honor, because she did it without seeing how it was viewed by others.
The pack loved seeing their Luna regularly, whether it was in town, on training grounds, or just passing in the packhouse.
Course what she did see, was that the pack turned on the rest of the Snyder family. It wasn't their fault that Kelly and Snyder acted out against her, and when she saw happening in front of her she defused the tension.
Especially when it involved the pups.
The cutest thing that she was still gushing about a day later, was the reformed had gifted her a fresh deer one afternoon and brought it to the house. Course she had to get through her happy tears before being able to dig into the presented meal.
But what was pushing her off the edge was the lack of Darius, she tried to reach out to him and she felt him there—But he didn't respond.
It was only when she went to bed that following night that he whispered so gently into the back of her mind, just as she was on the very of surcoming to the demand of sleep.
I'm sorry I can't tell you the truth, Wolfie...Soon. I promise.
