The Breach
"You don't seem too concerned." Maoh said a cold breeze blowing through his hair "Well, Reapers are tough sure," Issaic said "But they shouldn't be able to get up here, and they burn in the sun, so we're safe while we're sleeping." "Makes sense." Maoh said "However, I'm not convinced that they can't get up here." Issaic yawned as he stood up, and faced Maoh. "They haven't in the past." He said "But you're right, I was going to keep watch anyway." "A wise decision." Maoh said his eyes flickering. "In fact, I'll join you." Issaic smirked "Ha, it seems I can't get rid of you." "Well, after dinner." Maoh corrected "You see, I made a promise..." his voice trailed off, as the sound of scuffling was heard at the cliff's edge. Both he and Helios stood listening with baited breath, desperately hoping that it wasn't what they thought it was. "Aw Shit!!!!" Issaic yelled "There climbing up!!!" Maoh thought so too, but the scuffling stopped. seconds passed, then those seconds turned to minutes, and still nothing. "Hmm," Issaic said "You feeling brave enough to stick your head over and look?" Maoh scowled, But then shrugged and started edging towards the cliffs end. And ever so cautiously looked over the edge. "See anything?" Issaic asked "No not a thing-" but he was cut off by another ghostly howl and the ground beneath them started to quake. "What??!!" Helios exclaimed but Maoh guessed what was going on and snatched Issaic around the middle, snapped out his wings and attempted takeoff, as the ground collapsed out from under them. For several seconds Maoh flapped desperately, but the weight was too much "Drop me!!! Go back and warn the others!!!" Issaic yelled. Maoh then dropped him without hesitation, and flew as fast as he could back to haven, and surveyed the damage. The damage was zero to haven, but what the Reapers had done is tunnel beneath the cliff, and collapse the tunnels, leveling part of the cliff, and in doing so creating a sort or ramp onto Haven exposing it to the savage beasts that lived below.
"Ok! Dinners finished everyone!!! Liza said beaming as she and several other demons set four enormous steel pots full of soup onto the beech table. A large cheer erupted from the demons around them, masking a rumbling in the distance. And the party began, Brago was guzzling alcoholic beverages, along with the majority of the demons, as he went on and on about his origin story without Issaic to stop him. Nest laughing along with the other demons, and Liza was talking with Lannette and the other young demons "Liza, do you know where Maoh is?" Lannette asked staring up at her "I think he's with Issaic, why do you ask? Did you want to eat with him?" Liza replied smiling "Well, he promised that he would sit by us at dinner." Lannette answered looking at the ground "But I can't find him." "Well, I'm sure Maoh will show up, its dinner after all." Liza said Grinning mischievously "If he doesn't show, I'll punish him with no dinner for a week!" everybody laughed. "Well!" A male demon with long black hair said standing up on the table, "Cheers!" He raised a wine bottle along with the others. Then as fast as lightning, a dark figure dropped from the canopy and landed on the table so hard the guy with black hair was thrown from it. "Maoh?" Liza said in disbelief "Everyone!" Maoh said in a deep projecting voice "Be on guard! Haven has been breached!!!" And without waiting for a response he jumped with all his might and shot back out of sight. There was silence for a few seconds, then two different reactions took place one was the usual panic, the other just resumed the party. "Hurry!" Liza said to the kids "Go back to your tree, seal it up, and don't open it until I come get you!" The children looked at her, fear eclipsing there expressions. "What? Why?" They asked "Just do it!!" Liza yelled as she ran for the door to the outside. Liza was most unfortunately one of few that reacted defensively, most of the demons merely resumed their laughter and jokes. The idiots, perhaps too much alcohol.
Back at the collapse, Maoh dropped out of the night sky to bludgeon a Reaper as it darted in a dense pack towards the faintly illuminated Haven. Unsurprisingly Maoh's attack crunched his opponent's skull and sprayed gore everywhere. Maoh then turned to face the wave of Reapers bearing down on him. Yet despite this hellish situation, Maoh allowed himself a grin.
Meanwhile, in the forest below at the base of the collapse, Issaic wasn't looking spectacular. He was breathing heavily, and was covered in blood and minor flesh wounds. He only survived the fall because of a field, and was then met by a legion of monsters of course he terminated every monster that attacked him, but they still got in a few hits. which by now meant that he was running low on energy, having expended most of it during the recovery of the new demons earlier that day. "Damn." He said " Is this where I'll die?" then his thoughts turned to Maoh. He was certain that Maoh had relayed the warning, but What worried him was weather or not they would heed his warning. He had often said that haven was full of idiots who wouldn't sense danger if they were impaled upon a pike, time to see if he was right.
Back at the main battle, Maoh was loosing ground. Even though he hadn't taken much damage and had destroyed many Reapers, some had still slipped by. And Maoh was too busy dealing with the seemingly endless supply of monsters to double back. Seriously!!?? He thought as he punched kicked and crushed even more Reapers skulls, I had no idea there were so many on this island!!! It's like those "gods" are trying to unsettle us! Suddenly, Maoh heard a series of distant shouting behind him. And reflexively he tried to listen for a split second, bad move. His concentration wavered just long enough for a Reaper to strike him. Maoh barely managed to dodge the fatal blow, but it still managed to carve a deep cut down his face with its razor sharp claws. Maoh grimaced as he staggered back clutching his left eye. Then he balled his hand into a fist, and delivered a smashing blow that practically turned his opponent into strawberry jam. His eye now ruined, Maoh felt a surge of adrenaline rush through his veins, and he leapt at the nearest Reaper and began the massacre. With frightening speed he tore through his quarry mercilessly and slaughtered every creature he could get his hands on, it was clear that he had lost himself to the battlefield once more, and was allowing his instincts to rage. And as I've said before, this won't end until daybreak.
The light of the rising sun woke Maoh, and he sat up. His expression suddenly molded into confusion as he blinked a couple of times as he held up his hand. It was caked in dry blood. His expression deepened. Then he rubbed his eyes and experienced a horrible pain. As he writhed in pain on the ground, memories started to reappear, then rushed back in vivid color and he froze. Sitting up, he realized that he had been laying on the body strewn, remains of the golden field. Only now it was no other color than crimson. "My eye..." Maoh's voice trailed off as he tried to blink. Then the memory of Liza came back and he whipped around to see the mighty trees of Haven. They were still standing, and seemed untouched, but he was easily a football field away. As tough as Maoh was, when he stood up, tears welled up in his remaining eye. He figured his leg was broken, or at least cracked. A warm breeze blew across the plane, as Maoh looked wistfully out to sea. Wondering why such a horrible thing happened on such a beautiful morning.
