Chapter 14

Ross's POV

"You bastard!" The sound of fighting woke me up.  I opened my eyes to Supah struggling to keep Hawkfrost on the ground.

"What happened?" I whispered to Olivia. She pointed at the figure laying dead on the ground next to me, small pools of blood around both of her wings and head.

"That explains it I guess." I muttered.

"What did you expect me to do?!" Hawkfrost lost it. With a strong push he threw Supah away who grunted as he hit the ground.

"Let her live? She was a VILLAIN!"

"You don't understand..." Supah said quietly.

"Understand what? I think you're the one not understanding here!"

Supah got up, ready for another strike.

"Would you stop it?!" Lara shouted. Supah and Hawkfrost both looked at her.

"One villain down down doesn't mean we've won. And we're no closer to freedom by fighting each other."

"Lara's right." Jerome agreed "We need to stick together, the night is nowhere near over."

Hawkfrost took a deep breath to calm down. "We'll move and when we find a new suitable opening we'll set our camp and a new night guard."

Supah narrowed his eyes and stared at Hawkfrost. Hawkfrost glared at him and Supah lowered his head and helped with cleaning up the camp.

"That's better." Olivia whispered to herself as she set up the fire.

"Alright, all we need now is a night watch." Hawkfrost said, looking at the crowd

"Jerome," Jerome looked up when he heard his name "Would it be okay if you're the night watch today?"

"Sounds great to me." Jerome said.

"Can I help him?" I looked at Supah "I don't think I'll be getting much sleep tonight."

"Just don't screw anything up." Hawkfrost said after a while. I swear, Supah literally growled after that.

"Hawkfrost?" I heard Lara say "Come here for a second, will you?"

I leaned backwards slightly, wondering what they were talking about.

"Don't you think you should calm down a bit?"

"Calm down?!"

"Keep in mind that it's not Supah's fault Icee attacked us."

"Yeah but it's his fault he reacted like that."

"That's also true." Lara muttered.

"Let's get some sleep shall we?" I looked at Olivia.

"Yeah, I bet all that spying is exhausting, isn't it, Ross?" Sorrows smirked.

"Spying? I don't know why you're talking about." I laughed nervously.

Olivia yawned loudly and laid down "Good night."

I laid down and stared at the pitch black sky. I wondered if Olivia had any regrets, any sense of guilt knowing that she killed a human. No, not a human. A villain.  Everything was so quiet. Usually when there were two night guards there was some whispering. There was nothing but the sound of fire burning twigs now. I don't know why but I couldn't sleep because of that.  Finally somebody said something.

"I'm going in the forest for a bit." It was Supah.

"Be careful." Jerome warned him. I heard footsteps echoing away. I sighed and felt myself drifting away. Guess my brains just wanted to know if they were really going to remain quiet all night.

I don't know how much sleep I got when I felt somebody shaking me lightly.

"Ross? Ross wake up..." Lara said softly. I rubbed my eyelids.

"With that kind of waking up I'm guessing there isn't a villain?" I asked.

Lara shook her head sadly "Wish it was."

"Then what is it?"

"Jerome is missing."

The moment my brains started working properly (which is not long after I've woken up) I heard arguing.

"I can't trust you with anything, can I?!" It was Hawkfrost "Even if I make you an additional night guard you simply have to fuck it up!"

"Fuck it up? Excuse me if it weren't for me nobody would be here to tell you the news." Supah snapped back.

"Supah's right." Olivia said "If Jerome was a night guard alone tonight, we might've found out ourselves too late."

Hawkfrost narrowed his eyes and walked over to the fireplace. Sorrows was sitting next to Jerome's notebook, which he left not far from the fireplace.

"Everybody look! He left us a note." She suddenly said. She unfolded the paper and started reading the text written with coal.

"Dear friends,

As you've probably realized by now, I was taken away by a villain, and I think you're all smart enough to deduce which one. Please find me as soon as possible. You won't be able to save me, at least not my human self. But please kill the villain me, it can't be that hard to recognize me. I left some footprints, follow them to where ever KillerCanadian has taken me and kill my villain form. Don't attack KillerCanadian himself. I persuaded him to leave you alone and he will do so unless you attack first. Attacking him unprepared would make my death pointless.

I wish you the best of luck to all of you in the future. I know that you will find a way out if you work together.  Hawkfrost, take good care of your team, it's the best one you could've asked for. Sorrows, I am giving my role to you, I know you'll play it well. Take my notebook and read my theories, they will help you find your way out and how to defeat the villains.

Thank you everybody for giving me courage and making me feel like a real survivor. I used to be a real coward before I met you all.

My last advice is think big and think bizarre. Sometimes that is the best way to answers.

Stay strong, my survivors

Jerome..."

When Sorrows finished reading there was some silence. It seemed as if the tension between Supah and Hawkfrost had completely vanished.

"That's..... Pretty heartbreaking actually." I said, thinking about the feeling, knowing that you'll become a bloodthirsty monster and not being able to anything about it.

"Well, the least we can do is fulfill his last wish." Hawkfrost said confidently. Being the leader, everybody obeyed .

"I think I found the footsteps." Lara said, pointing at the blurred show footprint on the edge of the forest.

"Just as smart as expected from him."Sorrows muttered "He didn't stomp constantly so KillerCanadian would know about his intentions, but yet he left us enough to track him down."

"Well the footprint leads into the forest." Hawkfrost said, looking at what seemed to be miles of brambles and thin trees. "I hope everybody is ready, we'll be walking a lot tonight."

I was tired. There was a thorn in my foot and every step was painful. We've been walking for hours.

"I need a medic.' I groaned.

"Would you SHUT UP?! I'll treat you properly when we get there." Sorrows snapped back at me angrily. I must be a magician or something, making Sorrows angry was impossible.

"Well, we're here." Hawkfrost announced "Happy now?"

"Oh yes." I said and hopped to the clearing he was standing on. I threw myself, face first on the dirt "Oh ground sweet ground."

"Ross, we've been walking on the ground this entire time." Lara laughed.

"Yeah but due to the amount of brambles and thorns I wouldn't call it ground."

"Whatever, get up, we have a friend to kill." Hawkfrost pulled me up by the collar of my shirt.

"Look, the foot prints continue." Olivia pointed at more blurred footprints, long pauses between them.

Less than five minutes of walking later we were standing in front of an abandoned gray building. Moss and fern were on the edge and smooth walls of the building and there were only a few windows and one door, revealing the dark inside.

"Architecture? Well that must be new." Supah joked.

"I know right, who knew this place probably had an update or something." Lara agreed.

"Here's the plan. I'm almost positive Jerome is in there so I'm taking Lara and Supah in with me. Sorrows, Ross and Olivia, you'll stay here, go back to the forest edge and wait there." Hawkfrost explained.

"But what if something happens to you?" Sorrows asked worried.

"Supah once defeated KillerCanadian on his own, Lara beat Icee and so far I've chased away three villains on my own. I think we can take down one shitty villain together."

Sorrows sighed "Just be careful I guess."

The three waved goodbye as they walked into the building. As soon as they entered the shadows his their bodies from our eyes.

"Guess we should go as well." Sorrows muttered and started moving to the opposite direction. Having nothing else left to do, I followed her and hoped for the best.
