Chapter 6: Training
"Alright do you have any skills with weaponry?" Mal asked pacing back and forth in his newly acquired shirt. It was a sleeveless maroon shirt, and he had two swords crisscrossed on his back.
"N-no." I stuttered out as I nervously played with the end of my braid. We were in a field behind his house, the elephant ear leafs made a dome above us and it was peaceful and quiet.
"Alright we will have to practice with all of them to see what your good at and what your not."
I was admiring the sunlight coming threw the leaves above when Mal said annoyed, "You know you could help me instead of staring at the leaves all day." I look over to see him half dragging his chest over the our training area.
"Right sorry." I wiped my sweaty hand on my grey shin length flowy pants that Mal let me barrow for training. My training wear consisted of these grey pants and a comfortable midriff top that went over one shoulder which was also grey, I was barefoot as usual. Anyways I headed off to help him.
...
"Okay so we are going to start with sword fighting!" Mal had a glint of mischief in his eyes as he pulled out his two swords from their sheaths on his back. He tossed one in the air and then it pierced the ground in front of me. I stared at the long piece of sharp metal apprehensively. "Go on pick it up it won'y bite ya." he taunted pointing his own sword towards me. I sighed and reached down to grab the sword, I slipped my hand threw the handle and attempted to pull it out of the ground.
It was stuck. The harder I pulled the more stuck it became. "It's stuck." I looked at Mal who was looking smug as always. "It can't be that heavy princess," he shooed me away from the sword and pulled it out of the ground with ease,"Here you go." He handed me the sword and my arms fell with the weight.
"Come on then lets see your skills!" He taunted, I grumbled some incoherent cuss words and tried to lift the sword up to fight. My arms shook from the from the sheer immensity of the sword as I attempted to hit him with this sliver nightmare. He dodged (of course) causing me to plummet into the mud. "I give up! I can't do this it's to heavy!" I dropped the sword as I got up, and threw my arms into the air with exasperation.
"Ah, don't give up yet Looney! You have to have some muscle!" He grumbled.
"Do you SEE THESES NODDLE ARMS!" I shouted at him gesturing towards my arms.
"FINE! Fine lets try something else." He calmed down a bit,and made his way towards the chest once again.
.....
This was it. I had tried axes, smaller swords, hammers, hand to hand combat, ext. I was awful at all of it and Mal was beginning to feel discouraged.
"Okay there are two things we haven't tried yet," He began," Archery and throwing knives."
"I suck at aiming." I chimed in.
"OH WELL WE ARE GOING TO TRY IT ANYWAYS!" Mal got red in the face and grumbled to himself as he returned to the chest, revealing a beautiful oak bow that had what looked like carvings of vines up it. The quiver was made out of an oak leaf and the arrows had blue cardinal feathers on the ends.
"Your going to need theses." Mal tossed me a pair of finger less gloves that had the impression of leaves in them.
"Alright, so you notch an arrow like this," Mal demonstrated using his own bow while I copied his movements with mine." Then you pull back to your cheek, breathe, and release the arrow." He pieced the target we painted onto the stem of the elephant ear plant.
"Alright now your turn." He nodded for me to shoot the target.
My arrow was notched and I brought the bow up to my chest. I I stretched the string of the bow with the arrow to my cheek, so the cardinals feather brushed it. I took a breath and exhaled threw my mouth and I released the arrow.
I watched the arrow contort threw the air, as it struck the red target dead in the center.
"I DID IT!!! I DID IT!!! I DID IT!!" I jumped up and down threw the air with excitement.
"Ya I know. I saw Looney." He rubbed my head, beaming with pride that I can do something useful.
For the rest of the night we practiced in till my arms were numb, I missed a couple times but majority of practice I hit the target.
Mal told me that we had all week to teach me hand to hand combat, how to use throwing knives, and perfect my archery skills. Before I had to demonstrate what I learned for all of the occupants of the garden.
Fun.
