Chapter 15

***

Disapproval was in her eyes as they shifted between her and Leo. But mostly, glaring at the man seated beside her on the bamboo sofa.

For some reason, Leo seemed too calm. He barely even looked at her mother since it was her father who was speaking. The only sign that he was not prepared was the way his thumbs slowly wrestled each other as he clasped his hands like a bridge over his knees.

Mang Baste never stopped pacing slowly back and forth, pensive.

. . gusto ko na siya.”

Pinanlakihan niya ang binata ng mga mata. ‘Ibig sabihin, simula nang bumalik siya rito . . .’

Her thoughts were interrupted by Mang Baste’s voice.

She understood that her mother wanted her to remain silent and make Leo answer the question.

“She’s attending the workshop, Aling Minerva,” sagot ng binata rito.

Imee gently nodded to confirm what Leo just said.

“Sinasagot?” hindi-makapaniwalang ulit niya.

“Hoy, Baste!

Mang Baste waved a hand dismissively and turned back to her and Leo.

Lalo siyang napayuko. Her embarrassment earlier turned to guilt. All of a sudden she felt guilt for trespassing her parents’ right to know who she was getting involved with romantically.

It just felt like her parents could foresee something ominous that she could not perceive yet.

She caught his expectant gaze as he waited for her answer with the same anticipation as her parents’.

Imee didn’t want to break his heart, but at the same time, she didn’t want to decide right now without knowing what her parents wanted out of this.

But it was too late to plan things out. Her answer was needed already.

She had to decide.

Imee took in a deep sigh before she sat straight, looked everyone in the eyes, then focused on her father’s.

“Opo, Itay. Sinasagot ko na siya.”

***

It was already nine in the evening when Imee’s parents decided to let him leave.

Leo could not blame them. After all, it was also Aling Minerva and Mang Baste who said that they were aware of his record as a playboy; that even if they honored their daughter’s freedom to decide at twenty-seven, they would still keep an eye on him and interfere with their relationship when necessary.

Imee stared at him, making him curiously stare back.

“Wala bang goodbye kiss?” She shyly lowered her eyes and shrugged. “First kiss man lang bilang mag-jowa?”

Mataman niyang tinitigan ang dalaga. “Bakit kailangan mo ’yong gawin?”

He looked away in frustration. “Of course, I want to be your boyfriend, Imee. But don’t you think I deserve to get that title in an honorable way and not through shortcuts?”

“Ano ang ibig mong sabihin?”

Napailing si Leo. “I don’t like this. I don’t like this at all . . .”

He held his breath when he caught her face in his peripheral vision. Her eyes were already weak and misting.

“Ayaw m-mo?” Her voice thinned, hinting a sob being forcefully restrained.

“Imee . . .” He could not help it. He stared into her eyes and allowed himself to be trapped by their gaze. “Any man who will be your boyfriend should brim with pride when they announce their relationship with you to the world. But how am I supposed to feel that way, when I only became your boyfriend because your parents forced us to?”

“Forced?

“We’re only dating for a month!

Leo inhaled sharply as Imee went on explaining her side.

’Yon pala, ayaw mo pa pala ako maging girlfriend.”

“I want to be your boyfriend, Imee, but with your parents’ blessings, actual blessings. They obviously have no confidence in me. That doesn’t feel like a blessing at all.

I’ll get their confidence in me.

Imee shook her head.

He gently cupped her cheek. “Imee, can’t you see? We’re in bigger trouble now.”

“Trouble? Bakit?”

“You see, I think your parents made us legal so that they can have more access to our relationship.

She gently shook her head as tears began streaming down her cheeks. “Leo . . . huwag kang magsalita nang gay’an. Hindi gay’an ang mga magulang ko. Mabubuti silang tao.

“I know they are kind people. Kaya nga grabe kung protektahan ka nila. Mahal ka nila, e.” He finally cupped her face with both hands.

Oo, patago tayong nag-date.

He smiled sheepishly because he felt the tears rimming in his eyes as he nodded. “Oo, Imee. Worse, I can convince you to fuck me then you might wake up the next day, regretting it. I don’t want that.

“I can get you carried away with my kisses, I know that, and with that knowing comes a responsibility that I should not use that power to disarm you to my advantage. I want you to reach your dreams, to make your parents proud first, before I take you.

“Because believe me, once I begin taking you, it’ll become a habit. A routine. I’ll even get you pregnant quickly if you beg me to, but that might mean postponing your dance career too when the doctor asks you to.”

“Bastos.”

“Walang bastos do’n! His thumb carefully traced the tracks that her tears made on her cheek. With his every stroke, the traces of tears blended with her skin into fade. He sighed wistfully as he drowned his eyes with the breathtaking beauty of her face. “Hay, Imee . . . Why do I love you so much?”

She beamed in shock, making her face glow brighter than the pale light from the house that reached them. “You love me?”

He could not help a teary-eyed smirk. “You’ll be the very first woman to hear this from me, Imee—I love you.”

“Finally! Mahal mo na rin ako!” Naiiyak nitong talon sa tuwa. Maybe, she could have jumped higher if it wasn’t for his arm wrapped around her waist and his other hand caressing her face.

Imee wrapped her arms around his neck and sunk her face to the side of his jaw. “I love you, Leo! I love you too! Matagal na!”

Naguguluhang napangiti siya. ‘Matagal na?’

***

“I love you, Leo! I love you too!

He did not verbalized his question about it. Instead, he just acted normal, bade goodbye and left Hacienda Hermano.

He asked him to invite the guys at La Grilla in Alabang and meet him there.

It was already three in the morning when their group was completed.

Craig couldn’t come because of his paperworks, which was not shocking for them because the youngest in their group was the most workaholic. Zoref, for some reason, was not answering their calls or texts.

Lastly, Xenon was absent because they did not invite him. That rockstar was too popular it was becoming an inconvenience to bring him along in public places—the stalkers, the fans crowding around the moment they set their eyes on him . . . Moreover, his strict manager, Terry, began requiring an advanced one-month notice from them if they wanted to chill with Xenon. So, they decided to just wait for Xenon himself to contact anyone of them and invite them for a guy’s night or something. They have confidence in Xenon, that he would reach out to them once his tight schedule cleared up.

The ‘La Grilla men’ occupied a table situated on the right side of the superclub where the playful dance music was its staple, its heartbeat. The colorful spinning lights reached them and the black leather semicircle couch where they sat. Leo, Zeus, and Tyrel were in the middle of the seat, their backs against the walkway and the dance floor. Kero took the left end of the sofa and Juxe was seated between him and Tyrel. Claude sat on the right end, a few feet away from Leo.

“So,” Kero spoke as soon as his bottle of beer was served by a staff and uncapped it in front of them, “you’re saying that we are all gathered here because of another ‘problem?’”

“Ahuh,” Zeus answered for him, even if Leo did not specifically called his ‘need for advice’ a ‘problem.’ “Kanina lang, pinag-uusapan namin ’tong si . . . Imee—” he glanced into his eyes, quietly asking for his confirmation, “—right?”

He nodded to confirm that what Zeus said was right.

Kero continued inquiring.

“It’s worse than that, man,” Tyrel snickered. “Itinali na siya ng babae!”

“Itinali?” kunot noo ni Kero. Claude and Juxe, who were also newcomers, shared the same baffled reaction.

Most of them grimaced at the memory of that.

“Up to this day, I swear, I never gave any hint like that. We only meet to fuck, kaya pa’no niya naisip na in-love ako sa kaniya? I never even said ‘I love you!’” Leo said in defense, which he always did everytime that issue came up in his conversation with his friends.

“Sheesh,” Kero slowly shook his head and turned to him. “So, what about it this time, Leo? What makes your current case so special? E, ilang beses na naman nangyayari ’to?”

Zeus and Tyrel looked at each other and bursted into maniacal laughter. Claude just narrowed his eyes at them while Juxe was half-listening to them while discreetly filling his ziplock bag with peanuts from the bowl on their table.

Kero shifted his eyes between the two.

Zeus and Tyrel just glanced at Kero. They seemed to try, but they really could not stop laughing.

Kero gave them a deadly look before returning his eyes to him. “I don’t care kung ayaw mong ulitin ang kuwento. You have to fill us in with what really happened. That is, if you want our advice. Capisché?”

Leo sighed and gently swung the bottle that he was holding on its long neck from left to right, between his parted knees.

Leo glared at the two. “As far as I know, katukayo ko kayong dalawa.

“Nah!” Zeus waved a hand dismissively. But most of all, I do not intentionally fuck and flee just to cope with my own trauma.”

“I second the motion!” Tyrel said while playfully pointing a finger at him. “You’re a very bad man, Leo, kaya tama lang na kinarma ka na ngayon. Sure, you have trauma, but you can’t use your trauma as an excuse to play around with women’s hearts and bodies.” Then, he laid back on the couch, pulled his head back, and laughed.

Leo just glared at Tyrel. He appreciated that his friends were always honest with him, and at the same time, never left his side even if they think he was losing direction in life. They used different ways to encourage him to deal will his issues properly.

Claude disappointedly shook his head. Get a therapist already.

Kero agreed with Claude. “Fucking around will not really help with your condition. We know that you’re self-medicating by using ‘exposure therapy’ while trying to soothe yourself with the high that you get from the orgasm. But the chances of using that lifestyle to recover.from your trauma is slim, lalo na kung walang supervision ng eksperto pagdating sa bagay na ’yan.”

“Plus,” Juxe chimed in, “you won’t find a single woman who won’t trigger you when they wrap their legs around your waist, because those women doesn’t have a problem but you—your mind, your feelings.”

“What if I already found that woman?” His eyes mirrored his feeling of being torn between frustrated and confused. “Someone who doesn’t trigger my fears when her legs or knees touch my waist?”

“Imee?” salubong ng mga kilay ni Kero.

Leo looked away and leaned at the back rest of the couch he was sharing with Zeus and Tyrel. “You see, everything is going well between us. We’ve been dating for a month and just tonight, her mother caught us kissing.

“Napilitan siyang magdesisyon.

“Aren’t you two old enough to decide for that? To choose who you are going to date? I don’t get why it’s necessary for the two of you to have her parents’ approval,” ani Kero.

Leo glared at Kero. I can’t blame her too, dahil mabubuting mga tao ang mga magulang niya.

“Ah . . . No wonder you like Imee, huh? She values family a lot, like you,” side comment ni Juxe bago nagsubo ng mani at nagpatuloy sa paglalagay ng mga pulutan na ito sa baon nitong ziplock bag.

Leo did not pay much attention to Juxe’s side comment. He resumed with elaborating his situation.

. . because why not?” he glanced at his friends and their serious faces. “Gusto ko rin naman. Gusto ko rin siya. I’m still scared of her parents, though, because I know, they want us to be official, not because they’re giving us their blessing, but because they want to monitor me and detect when I cause the slightest inconvenience to their daughter.

“Matagal?” ani Kero. “So? Maybe she meant she liked you before you became official. Kaya nga sinagot ka niya, ’di ba?”

“No. It sounds like, she’s been waiting for so long. It sounds like she’s implying that she liked me for. . . so many years.” Leo lowered his eyes to the bottle he was holding. Napapaisip na naman tuloy siya.

“So . . . matagal na kayong magkakilala?”

“Mula pa pagkabata, Kero . . .”

“So what, if she planned this all along? If she planned to make you fall for her? If she, for example, framed up getting caught by her parents liplocking with you to oblige you to be her official boyfriend?” naguguluhang saad ni Kero. “You like her, right?”

Gumusot ang mukha niya dahil sa pagkalito. “Ano’ng ‘so what?’ Kero, if that’s the case, it only means that there’s nothing genuine about our dates!

“And if none of them is real, then how real is this feeling that I have for her? Do I really like her? Or do I just like how she behaved in front of me? And how real is her feelings for me? Does she really like me? Or does she just want to possess me to brag about taming a playboy?

“I . . . I don’t know what to think, man.”

“Then there’s one way to find out.”

“What is that?” he asked Claude.

Claude cleared his throat and propped each one of his elbows on each of his knees. His eyes firmly looked into his. Be an official couple then.”

“How is that supposed to answer my questions?”

“You get to spend more time with her then. Kaya mas marami kang maoobserbahan o malalaman. Mapapadalas na niyan ang pagkikita n’yo, so . .

“Why does that even bother you, Leo?” Tyrel chuckled as he sat up straight. “You know what our playboy rulebook says, that when things go wrong—leave. So just leave. Easy. It isn’t as if you’re planning to stay with Imee forever!”

Even Juxe’s hand hung in mid-air while picking a fistful of peanuts.

Zeus found his voice first. “Fuck! You’re in love with her?”
