They walked in the midst of the thick coconut tree plantation instead of the walkpath in the village to avoid attracting people’s attention. “Kailangan ko pang maglinis ng bahay!”
Hindi lumingon o sumagot ang lalaki. Instead, he kept brushing his hair with his fingers as if he was frustrated or fighting demons inside him.
Then, she recalled what he just said earlier.
“I’ve got a spare hour or two this morning, so let’s make this quick before I completely lose my mind. Tapusin na natin ’tong misyon natin. I have to see your dance now.”
Leo got out of the plantation first, climbing on a higher leveled ground before heading straight to the backyard of his old house.
There were patches of gray shadows from the trees and pale yellow sunlight on the small clearing where they walked.
Or should we go inside the house?” seryoso nitong saad.
Imee looked around.
Leo turned his head away and sighed.
Imee shrugged. “Bakit? Marumi ba sa loob? Naiwan mo ’yong susi? Sige, dito na lang siguro.”
Leo sighed and nodded. He approached the closed back door of the wooden house.
He crossed his arms and ankles before nodding at her.
She immediately headed to the music player app.
She haven’t even practiced yet, making her tension double.
With a shaky finger, Imee tapped ‘play.’
Leo lowered his head, making a few strands of his disheveled blond hair hang over his sharp brows and piercing hooded eyes that shot her an underlook.
On the outside, she displayed this sheepish, uncertain smile which perfectly captured the vibe of the slow, sensual song. She thought that there was nothing sexy about her dancing to a sensual song with only a pair of pink slippers, dark blue pajamas with yellow crescent moon prints, and a black tank top with white horizontal stripes. Tipikal na pambahay lang niya ang kasuotan. A green plastic headback held her pixie hair back, away from her eyes and face.
She slowly swung her body side to side, and as soon as the music started, she stroked the right side her neck with her right hand down to the top of her chest before flicking her hand downward and tapping it over her left chest, her heart. The tapping was mimicked by her body, making her frame pound like ocean waves. Then she did the same choreography but with her left hand this time, feeling the left side of her body and tapping against her right chest before imitating a heart beat.
She raised a hand and she rolled her head from right to left to parallel the direction of her hand and arm that circled around it. Then, Imee extended her hand forward, as if she was reaching out to Leo in great despair . . . longing for him to be free, to be available for her.
She was about to pull her hand back but it got caught into something!
Imee paused, her eyes trailing from her arm to her fingers that were caught between the gaps of Leo’s fingers. Her heart grew out wings that flapped against her chest violently at the realization that his hand reached out to hers and locked their fingers together!
As the chorus kicked in, Leo slowly stepped forward. Their fingers remained entwined between each others’ gaps as their elbows folded to bring them closer.
But looking away was not enough for her to escape him as he closed his fingers to lock her hand in his’.
She was inches taller than him, but damn, his charisma, determination, and intensity made him seem bigger than her, larger than life. His unrelenting gaze was harder to look away from this time, for their nearness intensified his potent magnetism.
In an instant, the floor was not hers to control anymore. The music wasn’t commanding her body to move. It was Leo who was taking her in every direction that he wanted to.
They slowly danced in a circling waltz before he parted from her and spun her around. Before Imee even completed her rotation, he already pulled her close, pressing her back against his heaving chest.
Weak in the knees, Imee slowly circled her hips. She found herself walling against him until she dropped inches shorter than him, enough for Leo’s lips to reach the side of her temple for a soft kiss, a kiss that made her feel like standing tall—metaphorically, literally.
As Imee slowly straightened her legs, his lips gently dragged lower—from her temple, to the side of her face, to her cheek. The gesture made her eyes glassy, in a daze. His feather-light kiss brushed against her jaw, and as Imee tipped her head back and rested it over Leo’s shoulder, his lips buried against the side of her neck.
His hands felt her hips, her waist, then the sides of her torso . . .
Imee released a breathy sigh to the sky as Leo clutched her sides tightly and slid his lips down to her shoulder. He gave her shoulder a gentle suck that hitched her shallow breathing before his lips headed back to her neck by trailing the tip of his tongue along her skin.
Her lips shuddered as she slowly drenched in sheer delight. Every part of her skin that his tongue ran through left a flame that burned her to life, like a candle, bending to the weight of the warm wax that runs along its surface.
Leo repositioned himself. Imee found herself weakly leaning over his strong arm before he hooked the back of her legs to carry her.
He lifted her high enough so that he could bend down, lowering his head to claim her lips.
Imee closed her eyes in surrender and let his warm lips guide hers—when to part, when to close, and when to suck his lips.
It felt like everything stood still—the cool breeze, the dance of the coconut trees, the shifting of shadows and sunlight on the ground, and time itself.
The moment their lips parted, they remained in their position. Her other hand followed, so Leo lifted her higher, bringing their faces closer and lifting her into a half-sitting position.
“I . . . I actually came here to get this done.
. . please, deretsuhin mo na ako. Kumpirmahin mo na ito. Sabihin mo na gusto . . . gustong-gusto mo ako!”
A tortured look softened his face. “I can’t . . .”
“Bakit? Dahil hindi mo ako gusto? Katawan ko lang ang habol mo?”
“No!” he gritted. “Hindi lang ’yon ang iniisip ko!”
She held back her tears.
“Kilala mo ako, Imee,” he explained, his face and voice were filled with internal torture. “Papalit-palit ako ng babae. Marumi akong lalaki!
Of all the people, you’re the one that I shouldn’t mess with the most, especially because of Mang Baste!”
“Si Itay?” she asked in a voice that was strained already with confusion nd frustration.
They’ll hate me for sure—”
Imee moved, forcing Leo to put her down on her feet.
“Imee . .
She was about to go, but he grabbed her arm.
“Patapusin mo muna ako, puwede?” masuyong pakiusap nito.
“They’ll hate me for sure, Imee, if I made you shed just a single tear. But if you’re sure that you want to let me be a part of your life, then please, let me be. Please, tell me that you want me too.” He took in a deep breath. “Because as much as I am afraid that I might mess this up one day, like what I always do in the past, I have decided now that I want us to be together.”
Imee gently pulled her arm away from his hold.
I won’t pressure you to be my girlfriend. I won’t persuade your parents yet to accept me for their daughter. If you want, we can start dating first.”
“We’ll date, Imee. We’ll date first . . .” Tila natataranta na ito. “Kikilalanin natin ang isa’t isa. We’ll go out! We’ll make-out if you like! We’ll do everything just to see if we are compatible. . . hindi ka nasasarapan sa mga halik ko, then we will stop dating.”
He paused.
He sighed as his frustration grew. . . just so that we’ll become an official couple. Legal girlfriend and boyfriend.”
Imee took in a deep breath and pursed her lower lip as she raised her hands and clasped them as they rested on her chest.
“Imee, please, say something. . . .” he pleaded.
Imee tried to remain composed but it was too late when she realized that tears already rimmed in her eyes. “Kaya bakit inaalok mo akong makipag-date?
Leo took her wrist again and gently turned her to face him. This time, Imee was too weak in the knees and at will to resist. She allowed him to see her quivering lips and teary eyes.
But, damn, I just kissed you, Imee. . . .” he groaned softly as if he was being tortured painfully deep within his heart and soul. With a shaky hand, he cradled her jaw between his thumb and forefinger. He gazed on her lips with longing before his thumb softly moved and stroked the corner of her lips. . . .”
Imee held her breath as Leo stepped closed to her. His other hand gently snaked around her nape before climbing to the back of her head, securely clutching her hair before pulling her head to his right while tilting up her chin at the same time.
. . playboy ka . . .” This was her last attempt to save herself from his kiss. Because one more of that and she would completely surrender.
“You see, Imee, I’m just a playboy but I won’t cheat on you. Playboys tell you straight up that they are not looking for anything serious, that they just want to flirt and play. While cheaters pretend they’re in love with you, and pretends to their side chicks, too.”
“No. Let’s date . . . and if we like how it goes, let’s have a serious relationship.”
As he cradled her shoulders against his elbow, Leo leaned down to reclaim her lips.
He slowly pulled away from their kiss.
Imee immediately picked up her cell phone from the grass and ran away from him.
***
“Tulungan ko na po kayo, Inay,” she murmured yet clear enough for her mother to hear.
May energy pa nga ako, e!”
It could have been simple if Leo just said that he felt the same way that she felt about him too, but no. He had to overcomplicate things by saying all the worse-case scenarios in their relationship that was not yet even existing! Natatakot tuloy siyang um-oo rito. Nagdadalawang-isip tuloy siya rito.
Nagtatakang tinitigan siya ni Aling Minerva. “Inaabala mo ang sarili mo. Ibig sabihin, may gusto kang kalimutan.”
“A! ’Yon!
When Imee looked at it, she saw three rectangular slices of yellow cassava cakes in a clear plastic.
She smiled softly at her mother. “S-Salamat, ’Nay.”
Imee sat on the top of the bamboo sofa’s back rest.
Imee licked her lips. Instead of the sweet cassava, she tasted something else . . .
Leo’s kiss.
Leo’s lips.
It was bitter. It was sweet. Both at the same time and all at once. The taste of his skin, his flesh, seeped deeply within her system and felt so familiar even if they were hard to describe or to name.
She recalled what Leo said earlier . . .
But, damn, I just kissed you, Imee. . . . . . .”
For the first time, she finally understood what his words meant. Not just understood, but felt it too!
Now, she understood why so many women got crazy over him!
Leo was supposed to be certain about how he feels for her. And by being certain, it meant, he was supposed to court her already or claim her as his girlfriend, instead of settling down with testing the waters, with just dating. After all, it was him who just made the confession!
Mali ngunit . .
Imee rushed inside her bedroom, grabbed her cell phone that she left on her bed and texted Leo.
From: Imee
To: Leo
Pwde tayong mag-date muna. Pero may mga kondisyon ako.
After hitting send, she paced in her room back and forth—restless with her heart and breathing racing.
To her surprise, Leo replied through text instead of his usual habit of calling.
From: Leo
To: Imee
Sure.
As soon as Imee sent her reply, she found herself staring at the conditions that she just typed.
From: Imee
To: Leo
Wlang ganun dito.
From: Leo
To: Imee
Signed,
Leonard Lapin Tierra
From: Leo
To: Imee
There, signed it. Screenshot this convo, and keep it.
Imee smirked. “Wow. Biglang humangin dine nang pagkalakas-lakas. Huwag kang mag-alala, mas mahihirapan kang mapapayag ako na magpaligaw at makuha ang matamis kong oo.”
“Really?” he chuckled. “Mapapa-oo rin kita. Tapos, mapapa-ohhh, ohh . . .” he moaned sexily that it made her eyes widen in shock.
“I’m alone in the car, Imee. Don’t worry.”
It felt so nice to know that Leo could take her silly jokes.
“I’ll wait for your sex then . . . Oops, wrong spelling. Text pala.”
