The Run
Everyone turned my direction as I walked into the cell block that I had been separated from. The people in here were so diverse. From an older looking man with a vest, to a colored woman with her hair in a bun. Before all of this started, you would have never thought that these could be the time of people you would come to love. But look at them now, they're all a family.
I spot Ember at a table with Carl and a blonde girl that looked a few years older, judging that her body was a little more...developed. Next to Carl was another boy with glasses. I didn't think that they're were anymore kids my age, but I was obviously wrong.
Ember gave me a slight smile and waved me over. As I walked over, people lost interest in me and continued doing whatever they were doing before. I sat between the blonde girl and Ember, straight across from Carl.
"Allison, this is Beth," she gestured toward the blonde beside me. I slyly smiled at the girl. "And next to Carl is Patrick." He waved at me, so I lifted my hand and gave a slight wave.
They were playing a game of go fish. After the round had ended, Ember dealt me a hand of cards as well. I didn't really want to play, I was more interested in just watching.
"The group that's going on the run today, we're heading out now, let's go," Rick said in a commanding voice. Saved by the bell. Carl and I stood up from our table, along with 2 other people in the cell block.
I headed toward the door, and Carl trailed behind me. As I headed outside I shielded my eyes from the sun. It was rather bright and really hot. I followed Rick into a truck, an Asian man sat beside me, and Carl was on the other said of me.
"Who's the Asian," I ask looking in Ricks direction.
"I'm Korean," he says looking in my direction. His facial expression causes me to slightly chuckle. "And my name is Glenn."
"Alison," I say staring straight ahead. The engine starts up and we pull out of the gates of the prison. The first few minutes of the ride were pretty silent. You could hear the engine give off a cranking sound every so often, but that was about it.
"Alison, how was your life, you know, before you met us," Carl asks looking in my direction. I have no desire to talk to him. He was the reason I was in this mess. I ignored him, but noticed that Rick was glaring at him through the rear view mirror.
We pulled into a Krogers parking lot. There were abandoned cars and grocery carts scattered across the pavement. We parked in the fire lane in front of the store and got out. The G from the sign was starting to fall off, but that didn't surprise me. As we started to make our way into the store, Rick stopped me.
"Use it wisely, and don't think that I won't kill you if you do anything stupid," he said handing me the pistol. It's nothing I had ever used before.
"Thanks," I said grabbing a cart. The man in the vest pried the doors open with a crow bar, and as soon as he did, we all rushed in. I started down the hygienic aisle. There was barely anything, mainly just pregnancy tests, because I doubt a lot of people would be dumb enough to get pregnant during times like this.
I was lucky enough to find two bars of deodorant and a box of tampons. They were super sized though, but at least they'd last. I had noticed that everyone at the prison was nicely groomed and they didn't smell. I assumed they had showers. I was going down the frozen aisle and then remembered the list.
I head to where the flour and sugar was. The aisle wasn't as empty, but it wasn't very full either. I grabbed a small bag of sugar that was sitting on the bottom shelf pushed back a little bit. I put it in the cart and then head to the sweets section. As I turned the corner, I hit a biter with my cart. It fell to the ground and I took this as an opportunity to attack.
I climbed on top of it, but another one grabbed me pulling me off. I lied on the floor and tried to catch my breath. The biter landed on top of me. I held it back with one hand and grabbed the knife with my other. I'm not gonna lie, it was quite hard keeping the biter from getting me. I stuck the life through its skull and it's body fell limp on top of me.
I grunted as I pushed the walker off of me. I tried pulling the knife out, but it was stuck in the biters head. The other one was still trapped underneath the cart. I pulled the gun out of the holster. It was slightly bigger then what I'm use to. I aimed at the biter and shot it through its skull.
Black blood scattered my face as Glenn came around the corner. I stepped back because there was a slight kick to the gun.
"Are you crazy," he exclaimed, "that could attract more of them."
"I-I'm sorry," I stuttered, "but my knife was stuck." I pointed at the walker. Glenn pulled the life out of the walkers head, no problem.
Rick ran over to us, "We gotta go, now." I grabbed the contents that were in my cart and stuffed them in a grocery bag. The chocolate chips. I hurried down the aisle and stuffed the last bag of chocolate chips into the grocery sack before following Carl out of the door. We hopped in the truck as the man with the vest got on his motorcycle.
"Step on it," Glenn said looking back into the horde of biters. As we drove away clouds of dust formed around us, but at least we made it out safe.
