PICTURE THIS:

June Callahan is twelve years old, nursing a new arrival back to health. Watching him go on a quest with her best friend while she stands on the sidelines, helping them from afar.

June Callahan is thirteen years old. Her best friends keep on going on quests without her. Something bigger is approaching. She can't shake the feeling that it will never end.

June Callahan is fourteen. Her eldest sister runs off to join the enemy. One of her best friends disappears to Calypso's island. The other shuts her out. Battered and wrecked, she is thrust into the head position of the Demeter Cabin.

June Callahan is fifteen, fighting in a war that should've never taken place. Her oldest friend and mentor, Charles Beckendorf, is dead. She hears the whispers of something darker and fights with as much power as possible instead of healing others at a distance like she was born to do.

June Callahan is fifteen, watching her siblings die one by one, until the pain becomes unbearable. Until there is nothing left worth fighting for. Because that is what drives her, isn't it? Her enormous, heavy love. Her fatal flaw. Her complex, innate need to care for everybody but herself.

June Callahan is fifteen, raw with loss, shattering something old and bone-deep powerful within her, making the earth shake with her grief; large twisting trees bursting from the ground, impaling all monsters within a fifty-feet radius; vines tying up enemy demigods, slowly choking them until they collapse; incomprehensible whispers filling up her head her heart her lungs until she can see nothing but red.

June Callahan is fifteen, blind with anguish, riding a wave of plants and destroying everything in her path; reaching Percy and Annabeth just in time to see Percy give Luke Annabeth's knife, before an arrow pierces through her arm. June freezing in her movements because the pain is oh so unbearable and she thinks she's going to die and all the powerful branches holding her up snap and splinter until she's falling and falling and falling—

June Callahan is fifteen, landing in Percy Jackson's arms. Healing and, in turn, patching up his wounds. The war is over, he tells her gently, wiping away tears she did not know were there.

June Callahan is sixteen, spending the summer with Percy and Annabeth— mostly Percy— as they recreate all the fun parts of the quests that she had missed out on over the years. Annabeth redesigning the Tunnel of Love ride for June and Percy to go on. Her dressing up with Annabeth in an imitation of Circe's island. Percy slow dancing with her to show her what could've happened in Westover Hall. The three of them hang-gliding to recreate the time Percy and Annabeth had jumped out of the Labyrinth and flown with Daedalus' wings.

June Callahan is sixteen, certain that Percy is going to ask her out, only for him to go missing.

June Callahan is sixteen, slowly dying under the weight of her hubris, unable to eat and sleep until they find him, rushing to the Grand Canyon because of a dream Hera gave Annabeth. Finding three other demigods instead. Punched in the gut with the irony that the only time she's ever been chosen for a quest is the time she doesn't want to go. But what can she do?

June Callahan is sixteen, finding unlikely kinship with the amnesiac son of Zeus. He lost his old life. She lost her Percy. They both want them back.

June Callahan is sixteen, hearing ancient voices once again as she and her new friends get closer to completing their quest. She doesn't want to tell anyone. Why worry them? (Her hubris is her undoing once again.)

June Callahan is sixteen, building the Argo II with this boy named Leo who resembles Beckendorf in more ways than one. She wants him back. She wants her siblings back. She wants Percy back. Jason and Piper stay with June and Leo while they work. Jason brings her tea occasionally. He sees things about her no one else has ever seen before. He takes care of her when she doesn't do so herself.

June Callahan is sixteen, waking up screaming in the middle of the night, no siblings left in her cabin to comfort her. All she has is the blond boy scrambling through her cabin window because of course he heard her, of course he cared. All she has is the blond boy who holds her tight when the voices become too loud, and is so patient, so patient, and doesn't ask her for explanations, only sits hesitantly on the side of the bed and combs through her hair while she tries to go back to sleep. All she has is the blond boy who ends up staying the night, tangled in the sheets beside her.

June Callahan is sixteen, so so close to being with Percy again. Tormented by voices only she can hear. She thinks of Percy before she sleeps but wakes up looking at Jason.

What is happening to her?
