Baz took a step forward to Jess. "You've gotten taller."
"You have some more scars. Was that from your faked death? Or other First Order business, traitor?" Jess held her ground.
"Come on, sister, I haven't seen you in years, and this is how you greet me?" Baz chuckled. "Not even a hug?"
When Jess just stared at him stonily, he reached into his belt and pulled out two blasters. Both girls stiffened until he dropped them.
Baz put out his arms and raised an eyebrow. Jess handed her blaster to Sabelie. "If he tries anything, shoot him. I trust your aim."
She walked towards him and tried to give him only a quick hug, but he held onto her for a few minutes, until she pushed herself forcefully backwards. Without looking back at him, she rejoined Sabelie.
"Ah, and Sabelie Pashe. Good to meet you."
"How do you know who I am?" Sabelie handed Jess back her blaster, keeping her eyes on the First Order officer.
"Let's just say that not everyone in the Resistance is as loyal as my sister."
"I'm not your sister," Jess said quietly.
"What?"
"I'm not your sister. You stopped being my brother when you faked your death."
"Testor," Baz said, and she stiffened at the nickname, "Do you consider our parents to no longer be our family?"
"No."
"See the fault in your logic?"
"You betrayed us, you're nothing but a traitor."
"I'm more than that. Now, the map."
"What map?" Jess decided to play dumb.
"You know the map. The one that old hag gave you."
"I don't know what you mean."
Baz began to play with his blaster, keeping it pointed at the pilots. "I've been trained to kill."
"You won't kill me." Jess tried to sound sure, but her voice wavered.
"Probably not. But I can kill Miss Pashe here. I'll ask again. The map?"
Jess was about to reach into her pocket when Sabelie said, "We have no map."
Baz shrugged and fired. Jess stifled a scream as the pilot collapsed beside her.
Was this how Pát and Vona had felt, having their friends shot down around them?
"Monster," she growled.
"All's fair in love and war."
"There's no love left in you."
"That may be. Now, the map?"
Jess shook her head. "You'll never get it."
"Here's what I'll do." Baz paused his fiddling. "I won't kill you, but what I'll do is I'll stun you, then take you back to our base, where you'll be tried for anything I can accuse you of, and then someone else will kill you and we'll get the map either way. And you'll never get your friend's body back to be buried. I know you're honorable. She deserves a decent burial."
"Says her murderer," Jess spat.
"Exactly. Now, for the last time, give it to me."
Jess reached into her pocket and brought out the chip. She tossed it to him.
He caught it, investigated it in his scarred hands, and pocketed it.
"Can I go?" Jess asked.
"Yes. I'll give you two minutes. If you try to follow me, I'll shoot you down."
Jess somehow got her fellow pilot's body into her X-Wing and was able to take off.
As soon as she landed, she let the tears flow. While she cried, the other pilots worked around her, retrieving Sabelie and preparing her for burial, checking up on the craft.
She sat in her X-Wing until she'd cried herself dry, then went to report.
Poe was furious.
Leia wouldn't let him get revenge.
"They've killed too many!"
"It's a war, Dameron. People die."
He went to bed angry.
