XIV

They'd lost another Knight.  The blaster one.

Kylo Ren didn't care much.  They didn't matter to him anyway.

They were expendable.  He wasn't.

The less of them they had, the stronger he would become.  If the Knights were gone, he would have all the power and intimidation they held, and be as strong as his grandfather.

Darth Vader.

The only good thing to come out of his cowardly family was his grandfather.

And he would finish what Darth Vader started: unite the galaxy under one rule, his own.

Kylo Ren was snapped out of his thoughts by General Hux clearing his throat behind him.

He stood. "General?"

"The Supreme Leader would like to see the plans you claim to have developed."

Kylo Ren didn't like the way he said "claim," as though he were a liar.

He walked over to the table and picked up a palm-sized hologram generator, which held his plans.

Brushing past General Hux, he strode down the halls of the Star Destroyer to the hologram room.

He knelt as soon as he was on the floor of the chamber.  "Master."

The hologram sprang to life.  "Rise, my young apprentice."

"Not so young anymore, Supreme Leader."  Kylo Ren obeyed him.

"Twenty-three is not much when you have seen as many years as I have, as many risings and fallings of empires."

He nodded in deference.

"Now, you have plans?"

"Yes, Master." Kylo Ren threw the hologram generator to the ground and a round shape popped up. "This is Starkiller Base."

"It looks like the Death Star. That failed twice, my apprentice."

"Yes, but this will not. Instead of building it, we will use an existing structure, an isolated frozen planet in the outer rim. It will take firepower from its star and shoot it. Once the star is depleted, it can be relocated to another system."  Kylo Ren turned the model with a quick gesture.

Snoke nodded slowly.  "Leave, and I'll look over the plans.  Come back tomorrow and I'll tell you whether or not you may build it."

Kylo Ren turned to go.  "Oh, and Master," he said turning, "there is an enlarged hologram room for you in the plans."

He left.  Perhaps the promise of a larger room for Master to command from would sway him in the favor of the plans.

Only a few years had passed since he had destroyed Jedi Academy, but how long they were! His technicians were fools. After nearly three years, they couldn't track down a man who was sending maps!

Maps that presumable would lead straight to him!

"Kylo Ren," said the female Knight.

He halted. "What do you want?"

"Hux wants orders."

Kylo Ren scoffed. "Tell him that for now we will stay put."

"But--"

He brushed past her, noticing that a lock of hair had fallen out. Again. "And cut your hair." Kylo Ren pulled out his lightsaber and ignited it. It sprang to life in his hand. She shrank back. "Or I'll cut it for you."

Without glancing back at her, he went to his training room.

The sanitation team had replaced the dummies he'd destroyed last time.

Letting the rage pulse through his veins, he sliced down one of the dummies. One two.

The next went down in one stroke, smoldering on the ground. For a second, it flashed with the face of the little girl who looked so much like Averann.

With a growl, he sliced the face too.

The next one showed him Mei. When that one was down, he saw Onya.

Kylo Ren went down the line, slashing the faces before he could be shown the faces of every person he'd killed.

Finally, panting, his anger spent, he jammed his hand on the call button on the wall. "Tell sanitation to restock the dummies."

He could hear the exasperation in General Hux's voice. "Yes, sir."

Then Kylo Ren destroyed the control panel.

With a shower of sparks, he left.
