II
As soon as Luke delivered his message, Leia called a council.
Among those present were Admiral Akbar, Han Solo, Lieutenant Connix, Red Leader Captain Haasa, and Black Leader Poe Dameron.
Poe chewed his lip. Ben had been his friend. Perhaps this was why he had been acting so strangely a few days before.
The first order of business was to return the bodies of the children to their parents and hold Jedi burials for the padawans and their masters. Captain Haasa offered some of his men, then Han said he would. Even without the Falcon, he could use the new SSP to move them.
The next was to find a new base. As soon as Ben Solo told the First Order of their whereabouts, they would be in immediate danger.
At Admiral Akbar's suggestion, they settled on D'Qar, an isolated planet on the Outer Rim.
Eventually, General Organa broke down. Who wouldn't? Her son had turned to the Dark Side, which in its stronger age had destroyed her homelands, and killed billions.
Han rose to comfort her.
Unseen, Luke slipped out and fled. He feared that the blame for his nephew's turning would be upon him. He had neglected to tell the Resistance of the two accomplices.
Far away, in an almost uninhabited system, he arrived at Anch-To.
He had gone into exile.
But what a beautiful exile, green islands spiking out of the azure sea towards an equally brilliant sky.
Much better than Obi-Wan's, in the desert on Tatooine.
Back at the base, Leia Organa stood amongst civilians and fighters alike, instructing those who did not fly themselves into groups to fly in Han's SSP to D'Qar.
As each load left, she felt a bit lighter. Another few dozen lives that would be saved if the First Order attacked.
She was not the only one watching the skies.
Poe Dameron watched intently, trying to spot any TIE-Fighters that might drop out of light speed above them. He hung out of his X-Wing, ready to fly.
Every once in a while, BB-8 beeped a report, and he acknowledged them with nothing more than a nod.
Hours later, the last crew of civilians were gone.
Though Leia preferred not to fly, she could, and well. She climbed into her X-Wing. Both crews followed suit and they left for D'Qar.
General Organa climbed down and turned to see Han behind her.
She hoped for support, but he instead asked her a question. "Where's Luke?"
"I figured he'd gone ahead with you!"
"He was here during the meeting."
"I know, Han."
Their squabble was interrupted by Poe's approach. "Admiral Akbar would like you to assign jobs."
Leia nodded and followed the young pilot.
She directed laborers to begin to assemble the makeshift shelters, before they could build a sturdier base. Those who could cook were instructed to prepare food, and anyone who was still without a job was to help unload things from Han's SSP.
Poe and BB-8 sat on a low hill in the dark, watching the commotion below.
The round droid continued his updates.
After the fifth report of No enemies nearby, Poe instructed him not to tell him anything unless there was an emergency.
He laid back and watched the stars. The last time he'd taken the time to watch them was when he was still a Padawan at the academy.
A meteorite shot by, streaking gold.
He started, thinking it was a TIE-Fighter, but BB-8 hadn't reported any hostile activity in the area. Everyone was on edge now.
Leia, in the hollow below, was being ushered by one of the captains to a makeshift home to rest. She resisted, but the captain eventually convinced her that she would help more if she slept.
But she didn't sleep. To make the captain happy, she went in. But instead of sleeping, she sat on the bed.
The portable shelters were soundproof, so no noises from the outside reached her. She hated it. She wanted to know exactly what was happening.
General Organa stood and threw a cloak around her shoulders.
The door opened before she could press the control panel and Han stepped in.
She tried to push through to the door but he stopped her.
"This is all your fault," he hissed, pointing to her.
She lowered his hand to his side. "What do you mean?"
"If you had spent more time with Ben--"
"If I had spent more time with him? I had duties at the base! I couldn't just up and leave, like you did."
"I had duties to attend to in other places," Han said.
"Gambling in cantinas," Leia said under her breath.
"Other important things. Tracking down the Falcon, for instance, and establishing trade."
"We had trade, and that piece of garbage is probably where it belongs now, in a junkyard."
"That ship made the Kessel run in twelve parsecs," Han said.
"When it wasn't falling apart."
"I didn't see you complaining about it when we helped win the war with it."
"It was in good condition then. I never liked Ben playing on it, something was bound to break."
"And being in a rundown base on Dantooine was safer?"
"He was with Luke!"
Han laughed. "And see how that still ended up?"
Leia took a deep breath. "Han, the Force works in strange ways, and sometimes things aren't revealed until a time like this."
"So that's supposed to explain why Luke didn't even realize that Ben was turning to the Dark Side until today?"
"Of course!"
"Still a bunch of mumbo-jumbo if you ask me."
He reached for a jacket and his blaster.
"Where are you going?" Leia asked, grabbing his arm. He shook her hand off.
"Away. I'm clearly not wanted here."
She ran after him as he walked to the SSP. "Han, come back!" But it was too late. The door closed. Leia whispered to the closed door, "I don't want to lose both of you."
