Chapter 5: You'll miss me

Ayesha's P.O.V:

I walk towards the bus with small hurried steps, Rohan and Abhi are following behind me while the bus driver is standing outside. He's about to light his cigarette when I show him my bus pass and he waves his hand, indicating I can go onto the bus.

I step inside to find the bus is empty, I look at the backrest in the pushchair area and it occurs to me how exhausted I am.

For a brief second I stand in the aisle considering whether I should sit there or not but then I think, 'It's highly unlikely for someone with a pushchair to get onto the bus at seven in the evening, especially since it's so dark outside and even if they do, they could park their pushchair on the other side without the backrest, can't they?'

With that I slump into the chair beside the backrest and rest my head against it.

'I can't wait to get home and just hide beneath my duvet,' I think as I blankly stare ahead of myself.

Abhi comes and smiles at me before sitting beside me, I return his smile while Rohan takes the empty seat on Abhi's right.

I'm glad Abhi sat in between us, at least this way I don't have to listen to Rohan's constant bickering. I swear all that guy ever does is argue with me-

"Hey, do you want my jacket?" Abhi asks, breaking my chain of thoughts and I realise my teeth are chattering together.

He doesn't wait for me to respond, he just puts the jacket around my shoulders.

I ask him, "What about you, aren't you cold?"

He smiles at me, "Actually, I'm feeling kind of hot."

His smile makes me smile and I wear the jacket because I'm really cold.

***

We're at the last stop before the bus goes back to town and it's such a weird coincidence that both me and Rohan have the same bus stop!

Not only do we live in the same area, we possibly live on the same road too! I don't know if I should be happy or sad. I guess it shouldn't make a difference to me.

The three of us get off of the bus and start walking away from the bus stop.

We've hardly walked two metres when Abhi stops walking. Me and Rohan stop to see what's wrong.

Abhi's searching his pockets as he says, "Guys, I think I've lost my keys."

With a thoughtful look on his face he drives his hand through his hair.

After a while he says, "You guys carry on. Rohan, I'll see you at home okay?"

Rohan nods and Abhi walks back to the bus stop.

Without saying anything I turn away from Rohan and I start walking towards my house.

I can hear his footsteps behind me and I stop. I turn to face him as I ask, "What?"

"I'm walking you home," he says casually.

"I'll manage, my house is just round the corner," I tell him.

"No, it's fine," he insists.

I'm about to argue back but he hushes me by pressing his forefinger against my lips, "Stop arguing with me unnecessarily. I said I'll walk you home so I will."

I nod silently as if under his spell and he moves his finger away. He takes a few steps forward but when he realises I've not followed after him, he stops walking and turns to face me with his hands resting on his hips.

He takes a deep breath, "Can we go now or do you want to stay here the whole night?" He asks, rather impatiently.

I roll my eyes and catch up with him. We walk towards my house, him beside me.

In the crossing of a road we arrive outside my house. For a few seconds we stand there, awkwardly staring at each other. Maybe he's waiting for me to say something?

I stuff my hand into my blazer pocket, hoping to find something to fiddle with. I pull out my keys and start playing with them as I wait for him to speak.

A minute passes and I realise he hasn't said anything. I decide to look up and I'm met with Rohan's back as I watch him walking down the hill, far away from me.

I throw my hands down in frustration. Yes, I actually thought he would say goodnight to me but how stupid of me, right?

I brush it off and turn towards my house, I bump into the small gate ahead of me.

I'm about to open the gate when I'm pulled into an embrace by someone from behind. He spins me around to face him and I hit my cheek against his chest.

I can feel the veins popping in my neck and my heart pounds fiercely against my chest although I feel no fear.

This guy could be a total stranger, a stalker perhaps but I'm not screaming, or shouting for help. My breathing may be harsh but I'm feeling unusually calm and that's what scares me, why am I not shouting?

The wind was blowing rather swiftly, I could hear the rustling of autumn leaves and I slowly looked up at the person standing before me as the loose strands of hair behind my ear fell onto my face.

I brought my hand up to tuck the strands of hair behind my ear as I'm met with another pair of fingers which caress mine and I hear a voice.

"I came to say goodnight," he explains in a flirtatious tone.

I snap my head up to see if it's who I think it is and I find myself smiling when I see it is Abhi.

I don't know why but I pull him into a hug, he let's out a little chuckle as he wraps his arms around me.

"Did I scare you?" He whispers softly in my ear, I could hear the smile in his voice.

I break away from our embrace and playfully slap his arm as I whisper yell at him, "I nearly had a heart attack!"

Seriously, the rate my heart was beating at I thought I would die out of shock.

"You know I wouldn't let that happen," he says while taking a step towards me.

I lay my index finger on his chest and he stops where he is.

"Good night Abhi," I say slowly and turn on my heels to walk towards the front door.

I'm about to unlock the front door when I hear him call after me.

"Wait!" He says.

I stop and turn to face him. He continues speaking, "I think you're forgetting something."

"What?" I ask him as my eyebrows knit together.

He waves his phone at me and says, "You haven't given me your number."

I stare at him for a few seconds before concluding with a smirk, "Not so soon, if you want it you'll have to work for it."

"I was only asking because when you go to bed obviously you're going to miss me and then you'll think, I should have got his number. I'm saving you the regret," he said smiling widely at me.

"I think I'll be just fine," I say in response and he wipes the smile off his face.

I smile at him a last time before going inside, I shut the door and think, 'Vah, yeh Abhi toh kitna chalu nikhla yaar!' (Wow, he's quite fast!)

The thought makes me giggle, I look up to see my mum coming out of the kitchen and I greet her as usual, "Assalamualaikum!"

She says, "Walaikum assalam," then goes into the front room.

I go upstairs and change into comfortable clothing. While changing I find I still have Abhi's jacket. I mentally shout at myself, 'Ayesha, you forgot to give it back to him!'

I squint my eyes, 'I know, I'm just so smart. I guess I can give it back to him on Monday, can't I?' I wondered.

'What if he freezes to death before then?' Yeah, that's my mind going wild.

'Stop exaggerating! I'm sure he can borrow one of Rohan's, can't he?' I argue back.

'See, he told you, you'll miss him! But no, you had to be difficult.' I roll my eyes.

Although I have to admit, he has some real good cologne and the jacket itself is damn comfy.

My phone rings and I put Abhi's jacket aside to see who wants me. I immediately smile when I see the caller ID, it's Aayat.

"Hey, what's up?" I greet her.

She gets straight to the point, "What's the deal with Abhi?"

"What?" I shout.

'I haven't told her about him so how did she find out,' I wonder.

"He sent me a message on Facebook asking for your number. He said it's important," she explains.

"So, did you give him my number?" I ask her.

"No, I thought I should ask you first," she says.

My phone buzzes and I look at the screen. There's another call coming through, it's Ulfat.

"Aayat, do you mind if I call you back in a bit? I have another call coming through," I tell her.

She says, "Cool, talk to you in a bit."

I hang up and receive Ulfat's call.

"Let me guess, it's something to do with Abhi?" I ask her.

"How did you know?" She asks in return.

"Aayat just called about the same," I tell her.

"Err, ok. I'm guessing she told you about the message then?" She asks.

"Yep." I nod even though I know she can't see me.

"I gave him your home phone number," she says quickly.

Before I can say anything she adds, "He said it was important."

"Okay," I say in defeat.

"You better tell me if something happens," she says.

I chuckle and say, "I will."

My mum calls me downstairs for dinner and I tell Ulfat I'll talk to her later.

***

It's been twenty minutes since I spoke to Ulfat. I'm feeling really impatient because she said she gave Abhi my home number but the phone's not rung. Maybe he changed his mind?

Just then the phone rang.

Author's note:

~ Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed the chapter.
Make sure to let me know what you thought by leaving a little comment and if you had a favourite scene, do share it with me in the comments section.

~ After this chapter, I'll be putting up the Q & A session. There aren't many questions just a few basic ones, I hope you'll be able to answer them.

Time for some random trivia:

So, I watched 'Dil Chahta Hai' today. (I've seen it like a million times but it's still so good! I love the song 'Jaane Kyon,' and you know what? I even have the same birthday as Alka Yagnik, how cool is that!?)

Anyway, how many of you knew Aamir Khan was offered Akshay Khanna's part and vice versa?

I was just thinking, the film would be so different if they hadn't exchanged roles, imagine Akshay as Akash, is that even possible? Like no offence but seriously?

I think I can safely say 'Dil Chahta Hai' is possibly one of my favourite old films, what are some of your favourites?
